SHAYSHAY..that is awesome you are only at 1 and 2mm's, if you are having symptoms..r u having symptoms?  IT is good to get it early in the disease..much easier to remove; and obviously not as much to be removed.  Your chances are excellent.  Do you swell in the stomach, is your neck vein popping out?  Are you tired all the time?  IF you are having these symptoms, then you should have the surgery.  What state do you live in?

 

NAN!  TERI!!  I was thinking the same thing, I hit my two month anniversary two days ago, which I felt I would be a lot better, the pain is in my bottom rib..left side, and is irratating as taking a deep breath is still impossible.  I see my cardiogist for the first time Thursday, I am sure he will order an echo; and Mri.   I would be interested in seeing the results.  They mailed me my records, and on the echo done the day before I was released from the hospital read, "pericardial calcification, enlarged heart", so, God only knows what that means.  BUT, still no arrythima's, I can't feel my heart beat anymore...that in itself was worth it, my heart USED to POUND out of my chest, and my shirt would move.  My girlfriend sent me cocco butter, I guess I will try it, I'll try anything at this point!  My scar is not raised, but BOY is it RED..almost purple it is so red..FIRE ENGINE RED>>LOL!  what does this mean? "Some of the ketoidal action going on??"   NAN, you ran five miles..YOU are WONDER WOMAN!  WAY too go!, TER is right, you are an inspiration.

Well guys, the articles goes out the first week in oct, I will send you all a link, he interviewed me on the phone this morning, he is going to write about the MISTAKE in ICU with the epidural; and also about the records not being accurate.  I hope this doesnt' burn a bridge with Cleveland with me..yiker doddle doo!  I guess we will see..have a good one all..your friend, Cathy tongue

Thanks for all the positive thoughts...

Well, we are in Cleveland, cleared for surgery... all the preop tests...  took MUCH longer than expected...

It seems that my surgery date will be delayed..  a couple of days at least... it seems that surgery scheduling tend to overbook.... heart transplants get priority... We also expect a huge storm here today...

Considering that this is a short week... I might do it right after Labor Day.. 

The good news is that it is not hot here.. I do better in cooler climate... the bad news is that I am a "calcification suspect"..

I'm impressed with the Cleveland Clinic... except surgery scheduling...  or they just happen to have a peak of heart transplants going on right now... 

Storri, nurses seem to be OK... so far.

Mrozek!!  It's just great to hear from you!!  I know we've all been wondering about you and just wishing you the best!  Sorry to hear you're delayed due to scheduling procedures, but I know you are in great hands there!!

Thats good your test are done, i bet you just want to get this over with....Labor Day weekend is such a busy time of the year,Like you had mentioned heart transplants comes first ...

So how did the storm turn out was it a bad one like you thought it would be?.
On july 4th i was cleaning at work and i crashed my freind Bill took me to the hospital and i found out i had Constritive Parcidits i have to have a heart peel and 1 heart valve fixed and one replaced ...It was caused
By Radiation theropy when i was 12 years old i am 43 now back than they gave you lots of radiation..i had Hodgkens back than it was fatel but hey i'm still kicking he he he.. they did surgery on me and put a stent in for now they opened me wide open exsploratory..so i will have my next surgery once i heal from this first...
Any time you feel lonely just feel free to e-mail i don't mind i get lonely here all day as well let me know how the Dr.s are and the nurses are i am thinking of having it there where you are.. God Bless you...Lots of love to eveyone... yeah

Thank you for getting back to me. so yesyerday i was being lazy,Did not feel like writing.but i figured i better
get on it today...Yes my stomach does swell up but i'm on a dietary pill its called Lasix it controls the fluids
in your stomach so i have to go to the bathroom lots but if its helping me i guess i can't complain huh?
I have to heal from my first surgery when they opened me wide open in my stomach they put a stent in my heart. so i will have surgery in 3 months or so unil i heal...My paracdits is 1 centameter around my heart...
I'm on oxyen only at night when i sleep ..I live in Durango co. about 700 miles from Denver...
I hope the pain you are having goes away its been long enough you would think? but i would talk to your Dr. though to be on the safe side

I am doing good today but it was so hot!! 89 today i can not wait until it cools down some i miss walking lots
But it has been so darn hot i'm suppose to walk a mile a day but no i have not;

Shay, don't ever get too lonely or bored - we're always here for you to talk to!  tongue I wondered what the radiation was for when you mentioned it earlier.  I'm so happy that you are here with us now to share your stories! 

 

Isn't it just amazing? - whenever I'm feeling blue, I hear these stories, like yours and realize that so many more have traveled paths even more difficult - It makes me feel more humbled than ever!  Please take care of yourself - we're rooting for you yeah And thanks for sharing!!

Hi everyone,

I just found this site today after my cardiologist at Stanford offered me the choice of a high-dose steroid trial vs. pericardiectomy. I appreciate your experiences, Medicine and the mass of literature it produces doesn't always give the kind of clinical experiences as in this forum. I should know, I'm a surgeon myself. Without writing a big story, I was an extremely healthy, active 39 yo guy until 6 months ago when I caught the "flu" badly, and when I went to the ER to get hydrated, I was diagnosed with viral myopericarditis (pericarditis by EKG changes, myocarditis due to a big cardiac enzyme leak, Troponin = 82!). I had no pain and no signs of cardiac failure. Over the ensuing months, I have developed disabling pain. Substernal radiating to the middle of my back, sometimes epigastric, sometimes radiating to both trapezium and back of neck. Horrible pain. Fatigue. Fast heartrate. I was tried on high dose aspirin, then Indocin until I developes esophageal erosions. No help. A month ago I started having episodes of sinus tachycardia to the 150-170s, so I'm on Atenolol to control it. Multiple echos have shown no failure or sx of CP. A cardiac MRI showed no abnormal pericardium. Never had increased ESR or cardiac enzymes ever. But the pain is constant. It's not like I have "recurrent pericarditis" because it doesn't go away. I guess the question I would like to ask is whether this pain pattern is consistent with pericarditis that people have had (I'm asking because I fear I really have chronic myocarditis, a much more nebulous a lethal entity that nobody I deal with wants to work up yet treat). Also, have you heard of anyone undergoing a several week trial of high dose steroids and actually having their chronic pericarditis cured?

Hello Bonedoc,

You've definitely come to the right place... there is such limited info on Pericarditis out there so the best way to learn is to talk to those who have experienced it.

I am not suffering from pericarditis, but my boyfriend does. I'm not sure if you want to call it recurrent, chronic, acute, who knows. All I know is, back in May, he started to suffer a lot of serious pain... I can't describe it as medically as you can (for obvious reasons), but it was terrible. His cardiologist put him on anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers to hope it would go away. It didn't. A few days later, he was writhing in pain the whole night, and at 5 am we went to the ER. After an echo, his cardiologist rushed him to the cath lab because he was going into cardiac tamponade. They drained 500 ccs of fluid. Scary.

He spent 5 days in the CICU, with tachycardia, atrial fib, all in all a really erratic heartbeat. He was cardioverted. We were all so worried. In the past few months, since he has been home, he has been on a long and slow treatment of prednisone and colchicine. He started high up, at 50 mgs a day or so, and has come down very slowly. The first time his doctor started decreasing the dose, he went a little too fast, and we had a reoccurence of the pericarditis at 20 mgs prednisone. So back up to 40 mgs. Now he is at 15 and is doing great. Prednisone is not healthy, we all know that, but it really does help.

I'd say give it a shot. It doesn't sound like you are suffering from constrictive pericarditis, right? Therefore, I can't imagine your doctors would jump into a pericardiectomy without giving medication a shot. Try prednisone, colchicine, ibuprofen, as well as some ranitidine and omeprazole for stomach issues. Drink lots of water, and stay away from red meat and sugar. That has been our protocol, and so far, so good.

Welcome (as it were) to the board, but I'm sorry that you've come down with this nasty syndrome.

Given my experience (I had a pericardiectomy on May 31st), all of the reading I've done, and the words of wisdom from others on this site, I'd have to say (along with Maya and as you point out) that it doesn't sound very much like you've got constrictive pericarditis.

With respect to your Q. re: Prednisone and chronic pericarditis (I assume it would be Prednisone, no?), I don't know...  MayaG is our resident expert in that department.  According to two of the cardiologists who treated me, the Mayo Clinic did a study in which 30% of patients with Constrictive Pericarditis recovered with steroid treatment.  I don't know if the study involved Chronic Pericarditis, though.

Re: your pain pattern, I haven't heard of anyone going through that, although Cathy was having a lot of atrial fib.  (Hopefully she'll chime in shortly).  I *did* have sinus tachycardia, though not anywhere near as high as yours.  (Mine was around 130.)  Very sorry to hear about that pain.  I know exactly what it feels like, because my whole adventure with heart disease started with pain similar to that almost exactly one year ago.  (My EKGs and heart enzymes have always been normal, though.)

In any case, I hope you get some real answers to this real soon.  I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it is not myocarditis.

MROZEK! SO great to hear from you!!  What did you think of Doc Lytle?  He is pretty impressive when talking about constrictive pericarditis.  Did you read your chart after each test?  WE would stop before going to each test to read the results, because you get to pack your chart from test to test.  Did you find out how thick your calcification is?  Did he tell you what part of your heart is constricted>?  BEST WISHES To you, you are in great hands.  JUST BEWARE of those ICU nurses...yes, all the rest were very very kind!

Bonedoc....I had a lot of pain before I had surgery.  I was prescribed oxycontin for three years prior to surgery.  Its been eight weeks since my pericardiectomy, I traveled to the Cleveland Clinic to have surgery.  I know that when my pericarditis hit, was 19 years ago, severe FEVER that lasted for days.  When they opened me up, they said their was a lot of pericardial scarring.  THEY had told me, IF I had been treated with STERIODS during this fever, the damage would NEVER had been as bad as it was.  I was measured with 11 to 12mm's of calcification that had adhered to my myocardium.  So, from my experience and from what I had been told, at Cedar Sinai...MAYO and then finally Cleveland...they said had I been treated with steroids during the "pericarditis" stage, the damage would not had been any where near what I ended up with.

SHAYSHAY!  Well, you certainly have the symptoms.  Have they told you, that you have jugular vein distention?  YOU can lay on the floor; and hold a mirror in your hand, and look at your JUGULAR vein in your neck.  IT will protrude and it will beat heavily.  Mine was so gross I couldnt' stand to look at it or it would give me the HEEBE JEEBES...THE ASCITES (stomach distention) is a total pain, and yes directics will help, when you take them, does your stomach go down compeltley?  IF you respond to the directics, that is good.  YOU sound like you have been through so much, my heart goes out to you.  you sound like such a strong person tho; I know you will do well!  Living in Denver, there is a MAYO CLINIC In phoenix, I just dont; know if they have experience with this.  IF I were you, I would call; and talk to a few doctors.  They are really good about getting on the phone.  I even called ST> LUKES in Texas, and the surgeons got on the phone with me.  They are pretty good about talking to you, when you have something rare.  BEST WISHES to you all..Cathy aka STORRI

I am finally going for the first MRI ECHO post surgery..

it will be interesting to see how much they removed.

Still can't yawn or take a deep breath yet, kinda has me

worried a bit.  Hopefully it will subside in time..I just hit my eight week mark, so I can DRIVE! Hopefully the pain will go away soon..

Very happy about that.  The incision is very very red

and numb, does the feeling come back?

Cathy, please let me/us know how that MRI/echo turns out?! I sure wish you were feeling 'more' better! :)

When they cut into you, Cathy, they damage nerves so it does take awhile to have the feeling come back, though in some cases, certain areas may remain numb. I still have an area on my neck that has been numb since 2001 when I had my carotid artery surgery. It really doesn't bother me, just feels sort of odd, as I put lotion on. :)

Iv'e had many surgeries i had my first on my neck when i was 12 years old to have a gulf size tumor removed
And to this day it is still some what numb and i am 43 now so i would not worry to much about it it will be ok...

No my stomach does not go down all the way? yes it can be bothersome as well...I guess i have to live with it until i am reparied again LOL....
I do not know if Phonix has enough experience with Contrictive Pericarditis?...But i do know that they are a great OR HAVE A GREAT Heart clinic they are one of the #1 hospitals for hearts...
I'm thinking of having my Surgery in Cleveland or Rochestor min...
I hear they are the best!!!...

Sorry to hear your husband's sick and I hope you don't get that!  There's been a few viruses cropping up all over due to school just starting up, I think.  (Spreads easier with crowds.) :)

 

Sounds like you had a nice weekend - I'm glad that you were able to enjoy yourself!! yeah

 

We had our son over and his girlfriend along with our daughter and watched a movie starring Will Smith - I thought that was hysterical!! tongue Then we grilled out steaks and salmon (guess who the salmon was for? haha)  So I had a very nice day!

Hey Guys!

Teri!  I haven't gone in yet, they were waiting for an insurance approval; and they just called today; and said they had it, so I just need to call and set the date for the echo and MRI.  A bit nervous to see it.  I have that same numbness in my neck, where an IV was, my jugular vein, I also have a very sore spot on my spine, where they put the epidrual cathetor.  My son will rub my back, and if he comes near that spot, it causes great pain.  I wonder if that is normal?  I hope you are feeling well and your spirits are up Ter, you are such a great person!!

I was a bum over labor day, I just took my twin sons out of the eighth grade as they talked me into Charter School, it bascially home school, but they go in once a week for four hours, and the rest of the week they are home.  I LOVE it, its so nice having them around all the time, I wish I knew about it last year, they had missed SO much school due to separation anxiety about my surgery.  That is excellent you do not have the jugular vein distention, a very good sign that you may be able to postpone surgery.  I know that Dr. Lytle at the Cleveland Clinic where I had surgery at is against preforming surgery unless you are VERY SYMPTOMATIC..reason being...the mortality rate can be high with this surgery, altho, we are proving them all wrong on that!  Cleveland is a very conservative hospital;and one of the reasons I went with them.  I had went to Cleveland and The Mayo clinic in the same week; and The MAYO clinic wanted to OPERATE the next day, I then flew to Cleveland the next day; and they bought me a year...which turned into two years. I was thankful for that time.  But, I must say, no longer having the ascites, and arrythimia's have been great.  After having a rapid heartbeat the majority of the time, to NEVER feeling it at all has been crazy......i simply love it.  STill having a some pain in the incision sites, but, I am cut from armpit to armpit, with the execption of the middle of my chest.  They cut under each breast rather than down the sternum at Cleveland; and I opted for that, although, I do believe the pain is worse after surgery, iwth the nerves and muscles there.  You sound like your doing great...does it interfere with your life at all>>>do you see energy changes?  Take care!!  Cathy aka Storrie

Hi Gang,

Just checking out from the Cleveland Clinic...

Full pericardiectomy 5 days ago... feeling like a million bucks already...

Overall great experience at Cleveland... more to come next week when we are back to California...

Thanks for all your support... the amazing part of it is that it seems that the results are immediate...

CONGRATULATIONS!

How did you like our doc Lytle?  HOW was your first night in ICU?  Did he cut down the sternum, or under the breast like mine?  I have a million questions for ya.  YOUR right, the symptoms are gone right away, I have now lost 28 pds, and keep dropping, I can't believe I had that much fluid in me.  But, made sense, I had weighted 118 pds for 17 years, then all of a sudden, I kept getting bigger. STILL can't get in my size 2 or 4 yet..but I am in a six....hopefully soon I will be in at least my FOUR

I AM SO HAPPY to hear you did well, we were all cheering you on and thinking about you daily!  Obviously you didn't get stuck with NURSE RATCHAT in ICU, she had short brownish/grey hair, older woman in ICU..my experience would have been great if not for that.  Was he able to remove it all?  Mine was so bad, he couldn't, but I am the freak of nature case...

so happy you are well, and we can't wait to hear the gruesome details!

What did you think of the doc?  HE is very intelligent isn't he?  AND very dedicated.  Did they sedate you before taking you into the operating room?  That is the only thing I didn't like.  I had a xanax in my pocket, I wish I would have taken it, but, i thought surely they would sedate before going in...NOPEAROO!

ONE more thing, I was out in FIVE days too!  Cleveland is awesome!

ISN'T that amazing?  I was walking the DAY after surgery, they came in my room and said, "cathy we need you up and walking by tomorrow", I was up and walking five minutes later!  amazing!!  NOW we just need to pray it DOESN'T COME BACK!!!

so glad you took your kids out of eighth grade,I hear home schooling is much safer these days...
Considering what goes on in schools now Bullying,Drugs,and sex,shootings its just terrible...
Thank goodness they only have to go once a week for 4 hours thats not bad....
Well thr Dr.s say as soon as i heal from my stomach surgery from July 7th i need to go in to have it..I think i will go to cleveland...It sounds like a safe bet to me...

You mentioned already being cut the way Cathy is?  I'm confused here, Shay? lol  I thought you were waiting to have your surgery?  Anyway... tongue I really do hope you are feeling well and you take care!!

Hi Teri Sorry you were confused
When i was 12 i had an exsploreatory when i was dignosied with Hodgkins diese..And when i went in on this july 4th they cut me open on the same long scar and took fluids out of my stomach and they put a stent in until i recover from this last sugery than i get my heart peel and 2 valves fixed.. does this make more sence now sorry for the misunderstanding?...Lots of lot to you Shay... yeah
