Hi,
I'm hoping someone here can relate to any of this. Here is some background:

Last month I began to hear a pulse in the morning when it was quiet (putting on makeup, etc). My husband heard it and obviously thought it was weird. I went to a general doctor a week ago and he did an EKG (said fine although it showed heart rate of 120) and basically told me I had Sinus Tachycardia. I did blood work and all turned out to be normal. He gave me .25 xanax since he thought this was due to nerves.
Even though I told the doctor I could HEAR a pulse, I felt like he didn't believe me or understand what I was saying. So, yesterday I went to see a cardiologist and he did think the audible sound was very uncommon after I told him I was able to record the heart beat with my iphone. I told him it only happens when the heart rate goes above 100. He did an EKG which showed my heart rate at 87 and said it was abnormal (EKG). He also heard a clicking sound.
I do have slight chest pain above my left breast, under clavicle which I'm not sure is related. I have an appt. Oct. 6 for the electrocardiogram and stress test. Until then, I'd like to find out if anyone else has had these symptoms. Thank you! Sarafina

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I am Kitt. Symptoms such as the sensation of hearing your heart in your ears, feeling your pulse in your neck, or feeling your pulse in your head or behind your eyes can be a result of heart irregularities or not be related to a medical problem.

Your actually hearing your heartbeat aloud and have recorded it? I have heard of loud heartbeats following cardiac surgery. It is usually when a patient has had replacement valves. I have not heard of what you refer to but hopefully another member on the forum will have the same experience.

I am glad to hear you are having futher test to evaluate your abnormal ECG.

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I have actually recorded it a few times just by placing my phone to my chest. Others can hear it within about three feet. I can email the audio file to anyone interested in hearing it.

This is exactly the problem I'm having when communicating to doctors. It's so frustrating trying to tell them that it is audible externally, no stethoscope needed and anyone can hear it. I didn't even think it was a big deal until I couldn't find anything like it on the internet. I know someone out there must be familiar with this.

I certainly believe you are hearing your heartbeat as it is something that is heard by other family members sometimes after a patient has a heart valve replacement.

I have a friend that is a cardiologist but is away on vacation so was unable to pick his brain for you.

I too hope someone else has some input for you.

Hi there I hope this finds you well!

I am fascinated by your symptoms and would appreciate any help you can offer.  My 13 year old son standing chatting to me suddenly said "can you hear my heartbeat?" and I could from about 2 - 3 feet away.  I was puzzled to put it mildly and rushed him to the GP. We are awaiting the results of the ECG.  He is a healthy, slim happy boy, and I am concerned and would appreciate any advice.  He has since told me this occurs several times a week, lasts for only a few seconds unlike the time I heard it when it lasted for 10-15 minutes.  Hope you have been given a positive diagnosis and that all is ok.

I have just completed all the tests and found out nothing relating to audible heart beat. My stress test (treadmill) came out fine and my echo cardiogram showed that I have Mitral Valve Prolapse. I know, it sounds serious, but it's actually very common . I don't think it has anything to do with what I went in for, just something they found . The doctor offered me beta blockers to get my rate down but I refused. My ego has a hard time with a 41 year old taking heart meds. However, I do find myself to have a rapid heartbeat and some very minor chest pain in the upper left part area by my arm pit. So far I have had 4 people hear my heart but the doctors have not. The first doctor could have heard it if he tried, but I guess he didn't understand what I meant when I said "it is doing it now." Even when I did the stress test, I got my heart up to 160 and I heard nothing. So my theory of hearing it over 100 is out. I think it happens when I have anxiety. Still, it is frustrating because the doctors really don't get it and find it unheard of. So, I don't know. Maybe being thin is related? Mine usually last a couple minutes but can come and go within that time. It feels and hears like a churning sound, gung, gung, gung....at the sternum area, but it's hard to tell.

Since your son is only 13, it would be highly unlikely that this symptom is something serious. Please, let me know how the tests come out!

Glad all seems well Sarafina and thank you for taking the time to reply.  The ECG my son had provided very little information, a slightly larger than average difference between the top and bottom electrical impulses??? He has been referred to a Cardiologist, so we will wait for the appointment.  I think you may be right about being thin playing a part, he is a very tall thin young man.  And it is annoying when people give you the odd look when you explain how audible his heartbeat was, he describes it as something like a phone on vibrate, it was an 'electrical' sound and I did in fat think he was messing about and I searched for the device making the noise before shock set in and I went into full mother in a panic mode repeating 'it's nothing to worry about'.

Just to let you know, I had this after an ADR to med. Xanax might cause arrythmia. Look up a trustworthy site and the long list of side effects from Benzos.

Benzos are most addictive and very difficult to wean. A good Benzo site to visit is called : http://benzowithdrawal.com/forum/ I have some friends who became addicted to Benzos, and forever regretted every taking this drug. As soon you reach tolerance, symptoms of anxiety, depression, etc... sets in, till the craving is "satisfied"

It is known, and there are many articles supporting this, that electromagnetic stress or RF from cell phones etc, can cause weird arrythmias of the heart. At one time, I had pulsatile tinnutis, which is hearing your own heart beat, specially when lying down. If you go on to PubMed and type eclectromagnetic stress, you will find a few articles about that. Several support groups concering this. Symptoms can vary. Latest findings show that EMF and RF from cell phones etc, causes damages to DNA strand, and damage to various physiological systems, including the immune system.

I had a PE (Perieustachian Tube) Tube place in my L ear years ago and I could hear my heartbeat all the time when I was lying down. Many things may cause you to hear your heartbeat.

I had the tube removed eventually as it was so annoying and I had a hard time falling asleep.

As far as drugs, there is a place for the use of benzos but like many drugs you must use them as prescribed and if you have a reaction then the medications should be discontinued.

If reads to me like you are referring to pulsatile tinnitus. In pulsatile tinnitus, people hear something resembling their heartbeat in their ear. People are very quick to blame drugs for their tinnitus, but it is rare that this is born out.

Drugs that commonly cause or increase tinnitus - these are largely ototoxins.

NSAIDS (motrin, naproxen, relafen, etc)
aspirin and other salicylates
Lasix and other "loop" diuretics
"mycin" antibiotics such as vancomycin (but rarely macrolides such as azithromycin)
quinine and related drugs
Chemotherapy such as cis-platin
Often people bring in very long lists of medications that have been reported, once or twice, to be associated with tinnitus. This unfortunate behavior makes it very hard to care for these patients -- as it puts one into an impossible situation where the patient is in great distress but is also unwilling to attempt any treatment. Specialists who care for patients with ear disease, usually know very well which drugs are problems (such as those noted above), and which ones are nearly always safe. Reference: American Tinnitus Association

This is just my personal opinion but I would suggest that people do remember you may have something else going on with your ears other then medication use. Check with your physicians.

There is a misunderstanding. I have never taken Benzos and never would despite very serious CNS issues arising from an adverse drug reaction. It took time, but eventually, they all faded with new neuronal cicruitry.

My heart failure, and other cardiac and health issues were as the results of ADRs to a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and mefloquine, 13 years ago now. The list of health issues deriving from the side effects and adverse reaction is very long.

My own personal choice is to stay away from all medications. I am more interested at looking at other non-invasive and non toxic modalities, which are
working for me.

I thought this forum was to discuss freely, differences in opinions, approaches and lifestyle choices.

I didn't realized posts exclude an open debate about medication and Big Pharma!!

I am able to hear my heartbeat also and have recorded it on a digital recorder.  This started after I began showing symptoms of some sort of autoimmune disease.  It looks like I have a form of vasculitis.  I've got tons of specialist appointments set up and have seen lots already.

I had the same issue as a lot of others where I went to a cardiologist who said my EKG was normal, my echo was normal, I have a slight murmur within normal ranges.  He told me it was not possible to hear my heart, so, he's not the cardiologist I'm returning to.

I did see a posting on another site that someone could hear his heartbeat and the day it first happened he had a chiropractor appointment who adjusted his C3 vertebra and it went away.  Whenever it came back, he'd get his C3 region adjusted and it would go away for a while.  I found this interesting since mine started shortly after I had a C3-C4 fusion.  Maybe it's coincidence and mybe it's not.

Hi there,

So i have the exact same problem as you. Sometimes my heart beat is audible without using any instruments to the people around me and to myself. And i have also recorded it. And it sounds like a phone vibrating too.
I have been to three different doctors and they all though i was imagining and in other words did not believe me . I have done many tests and all seemed fine ..
Please let me know if you found out what this noice was , as it worried me sometimes.

Hey. This is really a different and abnormal condition. I have never heard of it before. I suggest you better visit other cardiologist who can explain this to you in more details.

I noticed that I had the same problem this morning. I could hear (not just feel) my heartbeat in my chest (not in my ears). I'm a med student, so out came the stethoscope, and I noticed I have what I believe is an S3 gallop murmur (not too terribly worrying for young healthy people). If anyone gets any more info about what they think this is, I would love to hear about it.

When I was about 12 I could constantly 'hear my heart' and although I didn't think much of it at the time there was no doubt about it my heart was definitely making the noises as described above and it wasn't until I did the exact same thing and asked my mum if she could hear it that I thought much about it ! I totally sympathise with you guys in terms of the amount of doctors consultants and hospitals it took not to mention the frustration of trying to describe the noise and convincing them I wasn't mad until it was finally heard with a stethoscope (no idea why I could hear it plane as day) and after an ultrasound and ECG it was decided I have mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation which simply put means one of my heart valves doesn't quite close properly and leaks blood. Although since, I have been asked on several occasions what on earth the noise is coming from my heart! I am assured that it is a very common condition and is very manageable and 13 years later and two babies I can vouch for that! I have however come across this forum trying to look up if there is any medication or ways to relieve some symptoms linked to this condition such as palpitations and anxiety as it does get the better of me sometimes! Any information on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you !

I'm also trying to figure out what it is, having the same thing. This heartbeat thing, in my case, seems to be the result of somesort of spasm I had. I remember getting these cramps on a much lower intensity for about 4-5 months, but like I said, on a much lower scale, then it got more intense until the last time where the cramp thing lasted for about 3 days. The cramps are not particularly enjoyable, basically feels like your heart is petrifying. I went to see a gp. He did the ekg thing on me, then he sent me for bloodtests and told me that it might be esophageal spasms. Still waiting for feedback on that, but, I clearly remember this heartbeat thing being a result of whatever that spasm thing is. The beats started about two days into the spasm period, and lasted for a little more than a week. To clarify my version of the loud heartbeat, it was loud, as if someone was knocking from the inside. Not the pulse sound you might hear in your head sometimes from high bloodpresure, this I could hear clearly on the outside of my body. People standing about a meter away would be able to hear it. At first I could hear it whenever I was not standing, like when I was driving, when I laid down, in short all positions except standing. It would be the loudest just when I went to sleep. Its sometimes a slightly wet sound, as if there is some sort of air in my ribs. The initial cramps came from the same area, almost the middle of my chest, but more to the left side, never centre, always the middle of the left side of my chest. The last time it also moved down to the left side of my body, if you go from under the armpit down to where your ribs end, there. Anywhow, the heartbeat sounds came from within my left chest but i could hear it the clearest in the middle of my chest. It later on started to fade, and would only hear it in certain positions like laying on my back, loud, laying on my left shoulder, very soft but weirdly enough also a little pain with the heartbeat, on my right shoulder, nothing, no sound, no pain. Eventually all the pain was gone, just the beat, and then that also faded away. I feel fine now, but Im pretty sure it wil happen again and frankly, I'm tired of not getting awnsers or help. Ill probably see the gp this week. Im not sure if this description of situations relate to any of the other cases, if anyone can ad some more info on this, it would be great. Thank you.

Hi all,

I also have an externally audible heart beat. I have noticed it usually occurs after I have had a large meal. A couple of days ago I recorded it on my phone when I aas in the car, i will use te recording to show my GP.

Happy to share it with any healthcare professionals, i'd like to know what causes it and if course if it is significant.

I am 16 and this is happening to me and it's really scary!!!! I can literally hear my heart what sounds like blood pumping. Not in my ears I can hear it coming from my chest. It's ****ing weird and my left pectoral muscle has been sore lately.

HI, at last I found some people who also have this condition.The first
time I heard my own heartbeat was 10 years ago when I climbed a mountain. I first thought there was someone playing a drum in the distance, till I realised that it was my heart.
I went to hospital to have it checked but the docters didn't realy want to listen, they directly grapped for their stethoscopes. An echo of my hart showed there was nothing wrong with my hart. A medic suggested my vains could be the problem. It's a kind off popping sound. It's a bit difficult to tell where the sound is located excactly.
I'm not realy worried about it, i'm feeling well, and it's already going on for a long time.. It only happens when my hartbeat goes up, like when I climb a stair or so. My friends can hear it too, so it's not in my ear. Also never took benzo's or so. One friend said he could actualy hear the streaming of my blood. They are more worried then I am.

Thank you for having this forum existing. I am so relieved to have found it (and believe me, I have been trying to find information for 4 years now).

I am a mother of a 10 year old child who, for the last 4 years, has been to the ER 3 times and is now on my second pediatric cardiologist. Who finally gave a diagnosis, but still leaves me with many questions unanswered.

4 years ago my daughter started to cry and whilst cuddling her, I hear a loud heart beat radiating from her chest. Then it stopped. I immediately made an appointment with our generalist and he couldn't hear anything. I then went to the pediatrician. She couldn't hear anything.

However, I could hear her heart beat with more frequency (about once a month). Once it was so loud, we ran to the ER. By the time we arrived the noise had stopped and the on duty doctor, couldn't hear anything.

I decided to take my daughter to a pediatric cardiologist, who did an echo and EKG. The only thing he found was that the fluid sac around the heart was a little inflamed, probably caused by the pollen allergies. But with not explanation as to why I can hear her heart. By this time I did record the heart noises with my video camera and played the sound to him.

After 2 years of either no-one believing me, after another episode whilst playing a board game, I rushed my daughter back to the ER and pleaded with them to help.

This time, they could hear something. They also recommend another pediatric cardiologist.

Finally, the cardiologist showed me on the echo that my daughter has mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation. However, he still did not explain why the noise should be so audiable.

I have found plenty of postings on youtube of heart sounds of mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation. However, none of them sound like the heartbeat noise coming from my daughters chest.

After finding this forum you have reassured me that the noise probably is from the mitral valve.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation at a young age or have a child with mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation?

I have read so many horror stories on the internet that I am terrified of the future. I want to know what it is like to live a life with mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation.

Can a child go into adulthood without complications, or at some stage is a valve repair necessary etc?

Hello Rita & welcome to Healing Well. When it comes to our children, yes when something is wrong it is terrifying. However, since you seem to have a good cardiologist for your daughter, please listen to him, he is the expert. I also suggest making a list of questions to ask when you take your daughter in for check ups.

I have 2 different friends that had kids that were diagnosed with the very same thing as your daughter. These kids were young when diagnosed. Both of these children are now in their early 30's & required no type of surgical intervention. They were monitored yearly by their cardiologist & have done well.

You know the internet can be a wonderful to learn things no doubt. But, at the same time, reading online can be a nightmare as you are finding out. Do you really need this extra stress & anxiety, absolutely not. I suggest that if you want to learn about this stick with websites like the Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins, institutions like this where the information will be accurate. There is just too much garbage on the internet.

I came to this site because yesterday I could hear my 17yr old son's heart beat from about 1ft away. He was born with aortic stenosis and gets a yearly exam. He has mild restrictions such as no contact sports and no lifting over 40 lbs or any weight that will cause him to strain. He said his chest is sore and it isn't doing it as much today as it was yesterday and you can only hear it when he is in a laying down position. I have read most of the forum and it sounds like there is nothing to rush to the hospital over. I guess I just wanted to see if I could find anyone that has ever heard of this. I do have a call into his doctor but his cardiologists 2 hrs away and I do not have much faith in our small town ER to waste our time.
