Palpitations seem to feel different at different times. Sometimes they feel like a fluttering. More often it feels like a momentary pause of the heart which it is not or like a skipped or galloping beat. Sometimes it just feels like the top and bottom chambers are beating out of sync. It is so hard to specifically describe but it can DRIVE me crazy!
Here is the kicker: it seems like those people who suffer from GERDS or esophogeal spasms or even a bad gallbladder can have symptoms that feel like palpitations but are not! I am speaking form experience here!
In September or so I had my gallbladder removed because a HIDA scan showed it was not functioning properly. I was so sure it would not make any difference to all my chest pains and palpitations! I was really low emotionally because of years of symptoms which doctors pretty much dismissed as either not important or imagined. I was told that I was a neurotic woman, over-anxious, depressed, etc. I knew I was not and only had one advocate. My cardiologist who had thoroughly checked out my heart and would not dismiss me a neurotic or anxiety driven or depressed. He took his precious time as a heart doctor to continue looking for the cause of my problem even though it was not anything serious with my heart.
I had my gallbladder removed and the operation and recovery was VERY difficult for me, but here I am 3-4months later and I HAVE MY LIFE RESTORED!!!!
I have very little chest pain and that is only upon occasions which is more of a muscular thing, I imagine. My palpitations have DRAMATICALLY decreased! I don't know if it was sensations caused from my poor functioning gallbladder which really weren't heart palpitaions or if it was really palpitations caused from my vagal nerve being irritated from my poor functioning gallbladder but I do know that I am SO MUCH BETTER!
I am so thankful how my life has changed. Please don't get me wrong. I DO have palpitaions. They have been documented on an EKG. I do still get them. However they are not as bad and I work hard to ignore them and get on with my life. I have wasted so much of it due to fear of these things. Now it is time for me to LIVE and ENJOY my life again!
I can't tell you if what you are feeling is GERDS or palpitations but I would encourage you (after you have had your heart checked out and tried various GERDS medications) to try to ignore the sensations as much as possible and enjoy living your life to its very fullest! Find, Learn and Practice some relaxations techniques to help get a handle on life. I did this when I was going through all my stuff. It REALLY did and does help. I would advice everyone to do this. It is just part of a healthy lifestyle in our fast-paced, frantic world for today.
