Hello Everyone,

I Was just diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse today..Does anyone have this? and how serious is it? Also was hit with Myositis today too..I get rid of one thing then I get another. At least I finally, after a year, get to start my enbrel. I hope that it finally puts an end to these things because I'm starting to flare all over my body now.

Mitral valve prolapse is very common in women; it often goes undiagnosed because it rarely causes any symptoms.  You might need to take a prophylactic dose of an antibiotic before you have any dental work done, but that's probably the only time you'll ever remember you even have MVP.

Thanks Sarita....yes she did tell me that I'll need to get on anibiotics before dental work.

Dear Lori: I've had MVP for years ... no major problems, just make sure you ask your MD for antibiotics before any surgery or dental work.

Hey guys...I was wondering if you could tell me exactly what is mitral valve prolapse and also what does it have to do with getting dental work?

Dear Neurogurl: The best way my cardiologist explained it a long time ago, was the mitral valve is like a screen door which goes in a little before closing instead of shuting like normal. The reason you take antibiotics before any dental work or outpt surgery (ex: colonoscopy) is to avoid getting any infection.

I don't know if this is normal but I need to ask. I had Peurisy, then pericarditis, then vasculitis in the main arterie, then diagnosed with Myositis of the heart or on the heart (whatever) Janauary 15th. I am still having heart palpations. Last night it got up to 152 beats a min. I get this ugly feeling under my left arm then I feel my heart beating faster. Has anyone had this problem with the heart and if so is this part of the healing process? Of course I will call my cardiologist in the morning but was wondering if anyone had simularities.

hi neurogurl,

I was diagnosed with MVP 2yrs ago and right now, I'm hooked on a 24hr holter monitor as part of my yearly chk-up.  I'm done with my 2d ECHO last 2nd Feb and my Cardio told me that my leak has progressed compared to that of last year but still not be a cause of worry 'coz it's still on a mild level.  Have you had your echo done?  Here's a link that may help you understand our MVP problem :-)   http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec03/ch028/ch028c.html#sec03-ch028-ch028c-604  I also have a lot of symptoms and chest pain is on the top of my list, next is shortness of breath. Just wondered how your feeling, Lori.  Did you get checked out by your doctor.   That would frighten anyone.

Hi Lori, I can't believe I found someone else who has Myositis...mine has gone undiagnosed for awhile now...my doctor insists it is drug induced. I have Lupus and had a Pericarditomy almost 3 years ago. I have been seriously short of breath since then...they can't find anything wrong with my heart to cause this problem...I keep telling them I have muscle weakness and calsinosis on all my fingers but to no avail. I can't move most of the time from weakness is it that bad for you?

I did not see my doc. I was going to wait and see if it had happened again. Of course it did but it is getting better. And I am getting better. I do have an appointment soon though.

I am so sorry you are going through this. It is a very painful disease. No one knows unless they have it themselves. I was very short of breathe and I sweated so much and I still do. I also still have the heart palpatations. I had alot of things happen to me with the heart and lungs lately, but caused from RA. And let me tell you the muscle weaknss was the worst for me. How did they actually diagnose you with myositis? If they think it was drug related: what drug?
I was diagnosed with myositis on the heart muscle (caused from RA). Then I was having serious muscle aches and weakness throughout my whole body, but it had severely increased. I related that to taking Zocor. A med for high cholesterol. I just knew there was something else wrong. And I was way too sick. It felt like it was just about to kill me. I was unable to walk, it affected the muscles in my neck, was hard for me to talk and even breathe. I was told to stop the Zocor from my cardiologist and I sure feel alot better now. She had ran tests and said that it didn't cause any nerve damage to the muscle. They said the Zocor had intesified my disease. Boy I sure hope I don't get that bad ever again in my life. And I pray for those that do get it and have to go through it. Anyway thanks, it's always good to hear from someone else with the same illness, you learn far more about it from them than a doctor.
