LEAFY GREENS - BAD?

For a few months, my 83 year old father had swelling of his ankles and legs.   He was told that the swelling in his legs was making his heart work too hard.  He was given diuretics and that has helped the swelling.  He went to the doctor yesterday and was told that he had irregular heartbeats.  He was told to not eat any green vegetables because these will cause stroke.  My father will not question a doctor.  This goes against everything I read or have ever heard. 

My father has had no testing other than a halter monitor a few months ago.  He states that the test was normal. 

I am concerned that his heart might be causing the swelling rather than the swelling caused the heart problem. Now, hearing that this doctor told him to stop eating green vegetables, I need to ask someone. 

Any information or ideas will be appreciated.

Hi ms.mmmore, welcome to healing well forum, we are glad to have you join us here.  I am sorry to hear about your father's problems.  It does seem very odd that a physician would suggest that he not eat any green vegetables...to my knowledge and doing some research here I dont know of them causing stroke's.  My mother has severe leg swelling as do I at times...heart problems run in our family.  She has Mirto Valve Prolapse and I have Sick Sinus Syndrome, Bradycardia and a Septal Defect.  So usually if you have fluid build up in your legs, hands, face or wherever it can be an indicator that there are heart issues that need to be addressed....not the other way around.  I am wondering if this physician that he is seeing is his primary care doctor?  If so, I would make an appointment with a cardiologist to have him looked at.  A PCP shouldnt be addressing these issues.  Also, you may want to suggest looking into a change in physicians anyhow as this one doesnt seem too reliable with his information and that can be really scary when he is treating patients.

Dear ms. mmore,

It may not be a bad idea to accompany him to an appointment. Perhaps he doesn't get the story exactly right or the doctor isn't making himself clear or whatever, but at least you can question the doctor about his diet and how you can best help your Dad. I'd be straight-forward with your Dad and tell him you are concerned about what the doctor is telling him and you need the doctor to clarify a few things. If your Dad will not question, someone should. He may need a cardiologist and in fact, another doctor.

I know that some blood thinning drugs like coumadin require that the person not eat certain kinds of green vegetables.
