Perhaps someone can enlighten me-  I have been taking Vytorin for about three monts or so now and the last few weeks I have been noticing that my hips are hurting (soreness) knees sometimes my finger joints and sometimes the calves ofmy legs hurt --Is this the muscle pains and weakness the insert is talking about?  I was taking Pravachol and Zetia before and did not have these symptoms--I am assuming it is fromt he Vytorin?  Can smeone smarten me up?  Miss Teri???

Gosh, Stardreamer, it's soooo good to see you again!!  I'm just sorry you're feeling badly.

I've included a site that may help you re the drugs side effects-as you know that is a possibility.  As a matter of fact, I just had blood work done today to check for that very thing!  Though I don't think that's what mine is... tongue Please take care and I hope to hear from you more often!!

Thanks Teri--I checked out the side effects of Vytorin--I was hoping someone would be able to relate to me "how it feels" if ya know what I mean--

I really hope that it's not that, Star, but it truly is better to be safe than sorry! I have not heard back from my test which was done on Friday, but I'll let you know.

I stopped taking the Vytorin last Thursday--So I guess I am living dangerously LOL!!! I don't see my cardio for 3-4 weeks and I don't see my pcp until July!!! Perhaps I will call one of them to start me back on my other cholesterol meds--I am supposed to do lab the end of June--

My cardio told me I could stop mine, but I've been on Zocor for 7 yrs. and it's never caused me any problems thus far...so I'm waiting for the test results first. My body hurt from the pelvic area down my back, hips, legs and the legs the worst! I was just aching so bad the other night, it hurt to even have the sheets cover my feet! I even tried a pillow under my knees, but that hurt worse. I've had this off and on for a few weeks, but it suddenly just got really bad, and I'm wondering how much that Topamax aggravated the situation?? (I had to quit that after only 2 25 mg. doses from the side effects.) It feels somewhat better today...Please let me know what happens with your situation?! Hugs, Teri :)

Hi, I have just about the same symptoms as you and I'm taking Vytorin for a year or more. My Butt and the back of my legs are sore and it's hard to sit or lie down for long periods of time. I've used a salve called Boswellin on my hips, butt and back of legs before bed and it's helped. I'm going to go off the Vytorin and see if it goes away. My Doc cut my dosage in half to 20mg about 6 months ago as my chloresterol was low.

I've been taking Vytorin since December 2006 and have had a pain in lower back (just above tailbone) for several months. In addition I have varying degrees of muscle pain in upper shoulders, left arm and neck. Although I often feel achy all over. My Dr did xrays and found nothing and has referred me to physical thearapy and I just started yoga. I'm active already with areobics but now I've been wondering if the Vytorin is causing these muscle aches. It started with the butt and hips. Does anyone have pain in any other specific region?

I am new to this chat but this all sounds so familiar. I have been on vytorin for about 3 months.  My hips hurt so bad and my legs ache. I feel terrible after I try to work out which I use to enjoy. I have heard it is dangerous to stop taking vytorin once you have started?! I have not been able to find much on line except what the pharmacutical companies print and would like info from those who are actually using the drug.

eyes  hummm i am having the soreness in my hip are. if you even touch it  it feels like there is a big bruise i noticed it started about a month after i started back on zocor and i am only taking 10mgs!!! i have had trouble with the statins but am desperate to control my cholesteral.  this at least breings it down to 25o total. i wonder if theis hip ache is dangerous or just something we have to live with.

  I can't imagain having to live with this pain.  On the Vytorin my cholesterol went from above 400 to 175 in just 3 months, but the pain was so terrible.  It has taken over a month off of the pills to get the hip pain to go away.  I have been told to try the pills again but I have been very reluctant. I'm not sure what to do.?   I have the same question about this being dangerous or not. I use to be very active, now the idea of the gym or a yoga class just seems out of the question.  Which is more beneficial, exercise with high cholesterol or feeling like crap, not being able to exercise but having low cholesterol?  Someone has suggested I half my dose of Vytorin to see if the pain returns. Has anyone tried this?  The dose I was taking is 10/40. Does anyone know if this is a low or high dose?

:-)  i have tried them all, so i think it is worth a try to attempt using one of the others.  just stay away from crestor, start a new thread and let me know what you decide to do. it is a tough call. i am still able to do things, so you must have had real serious pain.

 To late about the Crestor. I tolerated that about a month and had to stop.  I broke out in some kind of rash this morning and I can only guess it is the Vytorin as it is the only new thing. I used the Vytorin for three months successfully and it has been all down hill since then.  I started back on the Vytorin in a half dose and now the rash.  Go figure.

  We have seriously the same story but mine went from 400 to 175 in 3 months.  I have already tried going back on the pills again, event cut them in half and the pain returned and now I have a rash that is majorily uncomfortable.  I am in between health insurance right now so I can't go to the dr.  New insurance not scheduled to start until 1st of November. I thought maybe some of my symptoms were menopause related but it appears through this message board that these side affects are pretty common.  I just don't know how serious these symptoms are and if I should try one more time.  I have also heard it is dangerous to go off of cholestrol meds once your start using them?!  Hopefully for you when you try the vytorin again it will work for you.  It is suppose to be one of the leading drugs to use.

just reading your stories and wanted to reply. I had been taking zocor for only 2-3 months. All the sudden I was unable to walk, the pain in my legs and hips were pretty intense. I callled my cardiologist and she had me take blood tests that confirmed I had myositis all my muscles. So I had to quit taking it. Now I am on zetia and have no problems. I guess we all react to meds in very different ways.

Think I started with Lipotor the first year...20 mg.   That was beating me up.  Switch to 80 mg. zocor....of course, that beat me up.   I am doing better with Vytorin 10/40 mg. for about 3 months.    So, always a tossup with the statins.  I have to say all my levels went down with only 2 months of Vytorin.     I am not sure why, I sure didn't eat differently....exercised less because of the heat, etc.   Go figure!   Yep, I know Zocor is the same meds with a diff kick, but a bit better with the pain.   Keeping in mind that fibro beats me up all time so takes awhile for me to adjust to meds.

I have been on Vytorin for nine months.  Over the past few months, I take it for a week, and go off for 3 weeks.  I know I am rolling the dice, but quality of life has to weigh in at some point.  Good luck to all.

Never was a question of luck...I am one of those people that make choelestrol 24/7+.   I have certainly worked at not building it up.   I guess you don't like the side effects?  There are many statins out there that you can try.   Because I wasn't using statins, not eating correctly, not exercising like I should have, I had a heart attack at 62.   The side effect of the heart attacks went well beyond to a stroke from Protimine.   Luck?   I haven't decided whether it was good luck or bad luck. :)   You can decide for yourself, but using the drug incorrectly is wasting your money.   Just my way of looking at it.  All the best.

Yes, it was because of side effects of muscle pain to the point that I am in pain every day that I take it.  My heart attack was at 51.  I certainly don't want to risk another attack, but I don't want to spend the rest of my life feeling like I have the flu.  The cardiologists don't want to talk about the effects of the drugs.  Maybe if I knew more I could make decisions.  Thanks for the input.

Vytorin and PSA

I have being taking Vytorin for a couple of years. My PSA has been also increasing steadily, in the last few months the PSA value increased even more, reaching 10, what is worst the ratio PSA free to PSA total indicated high risk of cancer. Mu doctor did not know the possibility of high PSA as a side effect of taking Vytorin. I had to go through high antibiotics treatment, a biopsy etc. On my own I stopped the Vytorin after reading of the possibility of the side effect. In 2 weeks my PSA dropped to 1.9 and the PSA free to total PSA value shows statistically that I have no cancer risk.

After going through this difficult situation I feel very disappointed with Merck for not advising the users about this problem after so many years of selling Vytorin, and making an huge profit. This, together with the recent studies results that Vytorin does not do anything preventing clogging of arteries, make this drug useless and dangerous. Why is Merck still selling this drug? Who is protecting us? What is more serious is that doctors do not seem to be up to date on what is going on.

Vytorin
I took Lipator about 3 years ago and stopped when I had left shoulder paid so bad that I went to the emergency room. They wanted to do a spinal tap and I said no just give me something for the pain until I could see my doctor that Monday. I stopped taking Lipitor and had no more problems. Well, now with a new doctor and she said I really needed to take something to lower cholostoral. I started Vytorin in December and now have bad swelling on my left side especially my left ankle, calf, knee, and thigh. I have unexplained bruises on my left ankle, left knee and unexplained muscle pains. My ears itch and the left one really bad with drainage in the mornings. I feel like I am in a fog and could not recall a coworkers name last week. I stopped taking this drug 2 days ago and now have no muscle pains.

i have been taking vytorin for months now. i've heard onthe news that it don't lower your choestrol or stop the placte from growing around her heart and it's not good you. Sowhat r we going 2 do for the people that high choestrol.

I just saw my heart doctor 2 weeks ago, we didn't change anything.  We are staying with the Vytorin 10/40 mg.   I have no idea why the drug is working for me, but it's working.  My stats have never been better.   I have used Lipitor the first year after heart attack, simstatin 80 mg. the 2 year (killing my legs), now Vytorin.  You can always switch to simstatin which is the genertic part of Vytorin.    Since I have other pain disorders, I expect some discomfort with these drugs.   Always check your heart doctor about changing to something else if your uncomfortable about the news.   It's a difficult call.  Because I am using Vytorin, doesn't mean I can't switch back to something else.   They are really difficult choices so all the best.

Well, I've been taking Vytorin for sometime now and the pain is unreal.My left shoulder and my right hip are killing me.I'm for sure quitting this drug today the pains not worth it.If fact the pain in my hip today is so bad I can hardly walk. mad

I'm a very active person and the pain is keeping me from doing the things that I love to do and having fun.I had a feeling this drug was not my friend, for before taking this drug I was just fine.I seem to be sensitive to most drugs, for I have had this problem with others as well.After reading this forum I am for sure this drug is the problem. cool

Anyway back to doing the things I love to do and having some fun! yeah
