Can Prilosec cause diarrhea and heart palpitations?

I have been on Prilosec OTC for 4 months now.  Immediately after starting prilosec I started getting very loose stools...and have not had a normal one since.  I cut the dose down to a 1/2 a pill a day.

On October 31, I started developing heart palpitations, which sent me to the ER.  I then followed up wth a cardiologist and had a 30 day event heart monitor put on as well as a stress/echo.  I am awaiting results, but it has been over 3 weeks now.  

Anyway, I am curious if anyone know about these symptoms?  It makes sense that diarrhea would/could deplete the vitamins in the body thus cause heart palpitations.

I'm so desperate, none of the Drs seem to be concerned.  Even my Gastroenterologist was like "hmmm, well you can stop your prilosec", but you are FINE, everything is fine.

I think Prilosec can cause such problems - I see it is actually omeprazole, which I also took until I stopped it.   I researched all the side effects .. suggest you do the same - just google Prilosec or omeprazole side effects, and you will be surprised.   At least the websites use everyday language that we can understand ... I find the leaflets accompanying the medications very confusing as it uses such high faluting medical terms!

PS - also research "Drug interactions" - omeprazole interacts with many, many other medications .. some just very ordinary stuff ....

Thank you Cecelia. I appreciate your comments. I am off it now (for a week) so we shall see if my symptoms subside. The palpitations still have not, but my "bathroom" issues seem to be getting better.

Please be warned about Prilosec. The side effects are absolutely horrible.
I thought I was having a major heart attack.

Thank YOU brebre1, I appreciate your posting. How long did it take to feel back to normal after stopping your prilosec?

Without being to descriptive, I have finally had my first normal bowel movement in 4 months. I just stopped prilosec a week ago and have noticed a difference in that department. Thank GOD.

I am still struggling with my heart palpitations. They seemed better the last few days, but now they are back. I just hope that these palpitations will subside.

I just found out about this poison. I took the last pill December 29,2010 and I went searching on the internet.
I took the prescription strength 40mg CR.

Susan, OMG I am so sick. I have been to the ER 3 times in 8 days insisting I was having a massive heart attack.
Symptoms were:
chest pain radiating to neck, shoulder, arm, short of breath, back pain, stomach pain... ok but the other symptoms didnt go with it. Severe left knee pain and muscle burning, and severe thirst with headache. I have a sore throat. Random shooting paions all over my body. The palpitations and the anxiety and the panic attacks. I only took 4 pills. I am cryijng, emotional, depresseed.
So as I was leaving the Heart Institute Hospital I took another Prilosec because of the stomach pain.

While waiting for my husband to pick me up I had another attack in the hospital waiting room and it clicked for me that maybe it was the Prilosec.
Doctor agreed. I went home and looked up the side effects and I was horrified.
My BP has spiked to 180/100. I already have high blood pressure. Whenever I get up to walk and use my muscles my arm muscles burn and my face and ear gets numb.

I'm so glad that you have figured this out and are not continuing with the pills.

I took prilosec otc and only a 1/2 pill (which was 10mg) and still had symptoms. I wonder why they don't list more of the side effects that people can experience.

Did all of these symptoms start after prilosec?? Were you only on it for 4 days?

Yes all of these symptoms started after I took prilosec. I took 4 pills but my pills were more stronger than
your and they were continuous release.

I have gone through this before and had an episode a week ago. I'm on prevacid for reflux but use it only when the reflux is acting up. I was getting a lot of palpitations after I had taken the prevacid. This time I only took them twice and have the horrible palps again but whether it is from prevacid or from anxiety or gerd??? don't know. My doctor sent me for an ekg and for an echo and outside of an enlarged heart, it's normal.

Ive been taking Prilosec for years . Love it for heartburn.

Been having heart arrhythmias for approx 1 year.

was in the hospital 3 mnths ago they told me I had a TIA (mini stroke)

Told all doctors I always take Prilosec. Nobody even brought it up...

Saw a story in the Daytona Beach News journal this morning and started my search that brings me to this point.

***  do we have to be our own doctors now??

Prilo- the answer to that question is YES!! We have to be our own advocate. Do your research and listen to your body. It will tell you everything you need to know!

This terrible drug, prilosec, absolutely destroyed me biologically. I have no doubt it sucked years off my life span. I have withered. My intestines no longer absorb and of course there are the doublebeats. It's insane. They even seemed to prescribe it to me daily knowing this is what it would do and completely ignored my complaints when it started, daring, after cancer investigations, an abdominal catscan to deny its cause. Permanent erectile dysfunction. What an outrage!

I am sorry to hear of your health problems and that you feel Prilosec was the culprit that set off all your disorders.

Omeprazole is not the drug for everyone and I truly believe that each of us needs to be there own best advocate and gather all the info re medications and treatments prior to taking the medication prescribed.

You have the right to complete information about your medical treatment including medications. You have the right to know about the benefits, the risks and the side effects of all medications. Your Dr. should give you this information in a way that you understand.

You can not be forced to take a medication you do not want unless under certain circumstances and I do not believe your disorders or this medication is anywhere near the medications that would fall under these circumstances.

I do hope going forward you start to recover from some of your problems and please remember to be your own best advocate.

I started taking omrprazole (prescription Prilosec) in Feb 2015. I began having horrific, chronic heart palpitations. I read about the side effects and weaned myself off if it. It is now July 31 and yesterday was the recent bout. I have had a 15 day event monitor, an echo with high PASP value ( pulmonary hypertension), a second opinion at a major teaching hospital, high PASP, told I did not have PH. Yet. KI am scared. I recently saw evidence that PPI's (omeprazole) can cause heart attacks. I researched and that is because it blocks absorption of nitric oxide in the over 100,000 blood vessels in the body. In PH the blood vessels are constricted and blood has difficulty getting into the lungs and causes heart failure. The vessels in the lungs need nitric oxide and can be damaged by lack thereof. The last time I checked, blood vessels are located in the lungs. I think there is a connection and that the lack of nitric oxide is causing PH which no one wants. It is a death sentence. If you are taking omeprazole, I would get an echocardiogram. My systemic blood pressure is all screwed up as well. PPI's are a multi billion dollar industry and are very powerful drugs.
