Hi,

I have been experiencing strange chest pain since November 2005.

Was smoking one night and all of a sudden felt intense left-side pain in my chest (lung?) Compounded with this I was outside that whole night and it was extremely cold.

I Don't smoke very often at all.

Have experienced random left-sisde pain since then, especially under intense cardio/training.

Was prescribed Naproxen for 'Chest Inflammation' in December 2005, although no tests were performed... visit to the doctor was very inconclusive. I couldn't take the pills as I have a very weak stomach and they cause a lot of acid reflux.

Had the flu for a week at the end of february; sharp left-side pain while coughing. Again went back to the doctor, was perscribed nothing but X-Rays were taken. again said it would subside soon, hasn't though.

can feel dull tightness when inhaling deeply always...

Have since cut back on intense physical activity except for occasional cardio...

Recently have gotten a cough back and can feel pain while coughing. Also, was running and had to stop felt as if I was having a heart attack.

Problem is definately aggrevated with physical activity. I have stopped smoking of any kind completely in the last two weeks, but there hasn't really been a change.

Will be going back to my real doctor soon (early may) and hopefully getting a pulmonary function test... but does anyone have any idea what this could be?

I do have medium asthma; Don't have a puffer though. When I was using my friends Ventolin pain seems to be reduced however, especially during physical activity...

Hi Scientist, Welcome to the board! Sorry you have been going through so much difficulty lately. It can all be so frustrating. I would like to start out by suggesting that you get a puffer for you asthma even though it is only "medium". I feel very strongly about this!!!My daughter has asthma. When she was first diagnosed, I could not believe it was true and was not so good at carrying her albuterol inhaler. In less than a week, she had her first major attack on the soccer field. I thank God that I had her inhaler with me that night and I KNOW it was at HIS prompting to take it that night. I was actually contemplating whether or not to bother with it as we walked out the door that evening. I actually went back in to get it because something was bothering me about it. Then we needed it less than an hour later! That is called a 'GOD THING'! She has had several more attacks since then (usually at a rate of 2 per year) at least one life-threatening. he is under the care of a pulminologist and she is considered only medium severe. I believe that the statistics on asthma deaths are about 4,000-5,000 a year. What you may not know is that those with mild to medium asthma are at greatest risk because they don't take it seriously enough and once triggered asthma can get worse very quickly-within a matter of minutes to hours. Please get and carry an albuterol inhaler with you at all times and be aware that things can progress rapidly and severly. Please forgive me if I have offended you in this matter but I have scary experiences in this area and don't want you to take any chances!!!!!!!!

P. S. Sorry, one more thing, did you know that the doctor can prescribe a daily medication that is inhaled which works to keep the lungs from becoming inflamed lessening the number of attacks you might get in a year?????

Now for the reason you wrote....I don't know. It really doesn't sound like heart because of the increased pain when coughing and breathing in deeply. It sounds like chest wall pain or inflammation but you certaintly don't want to take any chances with your heart. So I'd suggest getting in to the doctor's as soon as possible and getting whatever tests are needed to find out what is going on or that at least it is not your heart.Then you can get a prescription for an albuterol inhaler to carry with you at all times!!!
