Heart condition and ADD???

Hello, I am new to the forum. I was unable to find any posts that were related to questions I have. I also posted this in the ADD forum since this is about ADD and a heart condition

My son is 10 and we have started  testing at school for possibly having learning differences.I also have a strong feeling his has ADD, which by reading I have seen that they sometimes can go hand in hand. We want to rule out any Learning differences first. He has not been seen by a Doctor and I am not even sure my pediatrician can help. Before I go I am trying to get the most info I can about ADD and learning differences. However, I have been trying to find out more information about heart disease and ADD. I have not found any yet. My son was born with heart disease and is diagnosed as having moderate residual aortic insufficiency. a mild stenosis and abnormal mitrol valve. I am concerned as to treatment for ADD and this condition. Anyone out there have a heart condition and ADD...I know there are natural remedies that may help I just wanted to have more info before I go and they say MEDICATION =(  I really do not want him on any more medications. so, the information I am seeking is

* Does anyone have a heart condition issues and ADD? Please share any info that may help.

* Who can diagnose ADD if not the pediatrician?

* information on natural remedies that have helped?

Pediatricians are qualified to diagnose ADD and/or ADHD in children. Mental health professionals such as a psychiatrist or psychologist are also qualified as well as a pediatric neurologist. I have heard of some moms who have put their children on specialized diets which are all-natural without additives or sugar, etc. Are they helpful? I don't know. I don't think there is any scientific evidence to support this approach. However some moms swear that this special diet has made a big difference in their kids. I have also heard of a neuro-feedback approach where the child learns to control their brainwaves or something and thus improve concentration and attention. ??? I don't know about this either. I know nothing about heart disease and ADD. Good Luck with your search for information!

Hi XvMercy, I am sorry I am so late in replying to your message.  My little brother...well he isnt so little now (29) but when we were kids was diagnosed with a heart problem, Mitro Valve Prolape.  He also had ADHD.  My mother who is a cardiac nurse was very good at cordinating his care...anyhow, he was seen by a cardiologist for his heart condition and a psychiatrist who prescribed Ritalin at small doses for his ADHD.  Both of his doctors kept in close contact regarding his treatment and care.

Now, as to weither or not the two go hand in hand I couldnt say.  I would actually be more inclined to believe that they are very seperate issues but then again I am not a physician.  Take care and please do keep us posted on how he is doing.
