New to this forum..Propafenone anyone?

Hello everyone,

 

I have posted in the Lupus, and diabetes forums, but now, I am asking about a drug I have been put on for atrial fib. My new cardiologist took me off of digoxin, and sotalol, and has now put me on Propafenone 150 mg 2x/daily, and also Bisoprolol 5 mg once daily.  I am concerned about what I have read so far on the net.  Like 20% going off of the drug because of side effects..and the warnings!!! can cause sudden death..what am I getting myself into?

Hello,

Propafenone (Rythmol) has been very successsful for many people with A-Fib and V-Tach. Some people have not tolerated the side efects which you have already researched and as ar as sudden death, IMHO that might be patient's that decided to stop the med and go into a deadly rhythm.

I feel that you need to discuss this at great length with your cardiologist as you have legitimate concerns about using this drug.

The Bisoprolol (Zebeta) is a synthetic beta blocker. Bisoprolol is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard.

My recommendation is to discuss this with your physician and always be familiar with the side efects including food interactions.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will be seeing him, but not till the end of June!!!  I do have an apptmt with my family doc in a few days and hopefully she will calm my fears till I see him.

I was on Rythmol for 5 years and it worked wonders for me! Unfortunately, after you reach a period of 2 - 3 yrs, you are suppose to come off med & change to something different due to the side effects caused by long-term use. I'm on Sotolol along w/others that have continued to work for me. I had a stent put in on Dec. 13th & the arrythmias have decreased dramatically.

Thank you so much Pegleg and Elisha. I feel alot safer now that I have metsomeone on the drug.  It was last week the cardiologist phoned the rx in, (wednesday) and by friday I was still waiting for it to be filled.  They told me that it was so rare that anyone took that particular drug that it was on order.  Then when I finally got it yesterday, I read some things about it on the net..and gotta tell ya, I was pretty nervous about taking it. LOL of course I had already taken my first pill before I researched it, but I have to say, that last night was the first night in weeks that I didnt feel any episodes of irregular beating at all. I will be seeing my family doc on friday with a printout of what I found out, and then get her opinion too, because, even Kitt says I am right to be concerned.
