Just got my endoscopy biopsy back and it was negative. Everything's fine.

With the Protonix not working effectively, I spoke to my doctor about what could be causing my symptoms -- feeling like there's something in my throat, heaviness in chest trying to get a deep breath, slight chest discomfort -- and he said it could be esophogeal spasms caused by stress.

He's taking me off the Protonix and putting me on a new medication for the spasms, which I don't recall the name right now.

Has anybody been diagnosed with this?

That sounds much more like I have at the moment. My scope showed esophatitis, gastrisits and duodenitis but this is a feeling in my esophaous unlike heartburn. It like a knot or severe tightness which is only relieved when I burp loudly and then it comes back again. I have anti spasms drugs but they dont seem to be helping in this area. Please post the name of the drug that he prescribed as I have an appt on Monday. I know the anti spasm drugs work for stomach and colon spasms but this is a different kind of tissue and I read that they use nitrates and even Calcium channel blockers for esopageal spasms. My Nexium is not working either for this.

I'll post the name of the drug as soon as I hear back from the pharmacy. And, like you, I burp -- small ones -- all the time, especially in the morning when I get up.

The trapped air causing the burps could be from esophogeal spasms, you think?

That is what I am thinking. I have had problems with my digestive system for years but it has only been recently that I have added this one. Oh, it is so painful until I burp but mine feel like they are coming from my toes. I have to sort of scrunch up on my left side to get it out and the pain before it comes is terrible. Thanks for you answer. I have another appt. Monday and want some answers on how I can help myself. Part of my problem is a severe cough where I take in alot of air which causes gas. I have Chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

In my experience esophogeal spasms and gas aren't really related. My spasms were in the center of my chest and felt like unbelievable pulsing pain. It was like a tight squeezing---similar to what one would feel with a heart attack. I was given morphine, but it didn't help and I needed dilaudid to relieve the pain from these. The pain from the spasms did NOT move around-- it was steady and located strictly in one location. It also was not relieved by burping or anything but pain meds. I didn't burp at all with these spasms. This was strictly serious pain.

The gas pain is more of a tight overall chest pain/ discomfort that is relieved by burping. It's so uncomfortable at times that you almost feel like you're having a panic attack or you can't breathe, but you can. When you burp, you feel relief, but the pressure builds up again. It feels like it's coming up your throat and sometimes you can sort of "squeeze" acid up your throat to relieve some of the pressure. For me, walking around and bending and stretching help get this gas moving up for a burp. Lying down is the worst thing I can do. Pain from this can be sharp at times, and is more of an erratic stabbing pain that moves around your chest and tummy.

Just my experience...am sure everyone is different.

Hmm. well, not sure then. I have had acid problems for years but I have never had this knot in the center of my chest. I know there are 2 valves and I think this is around the UES valve, not the LES. Sometimes I feel the pressure in the throat also but not really the knot but it is relieved temporairly by burping. I will be sure and ask my Doctor about the gas and the spasms. Finally last night I took a mild laxative and have been getting rid of the gas all day and no pressure buildup. I have to find out how to get rid of this situation. It is intolerable.
