I have LPR and i am in need of some remedies or solutions. I have had a soar throat on the left side since november.I am on prilosec and now i do not have heartburn anymore. I was also put on nasonex but i think my sore throat has gotten worse from that. I am not overweight and i eat pretty healthy. I also have started drinking only spring water. Is there anyhting else i can do for my throat? Are there any herbal remedies worth trying for LPR? Can LPR every fully go away or can i only ease the pain? I am only sixteen and i cant imagine myself with this for the rest of my life. Also, i am a speedskater so i spend a lot of time bent over. I used to get heartburn from this but now that i am on prilosec i am doing just fine. I do not plan to quit anytime soon. Any suggesstions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Did your doctor describe some of the dietary changes that you can make to help out? That and medication (Nexium and Zantac) have really helped me since I was diagnosed.

Talk with your doctor about your diet if you haven't already, but in the meantime, you can probably find some threads here about it. I know that I was specifically cautioned to cut out caffeine, carbonated beverages, tomato products, and fried foods, to name the most significant for me. Citrus and chocolate are also on the "avoid" list.

percycat, I have taken out chocolate, mint, tomatoes, oranges, coffee, tea, onions, etc. etc. and still have had the worst LPR ever, for 2 years now!!

My LPR only got better when I was on large doses of PPIs, i.e. 3 times a day. :-)

Bopeep, may I ask which ppi you took 3 times a day?  And how many mg each?  Lastly, who told you to take that much?  Doctors?

I am aware of the diet changes and i have made changes. Although, i never really ate all that unhealthy in the first place. I think its mostly been the bending over and skating that has gotten me. I really think only drinking spring water has helped me. And i've also started taking ginger which has also had some positive effects. I seriously hope that i can get rid of this, or at least minimize it a lot. Any other suggestions are still greatly appreciated!

MaggieLynn, you are lucky that ginger had worked for you. Because nothing has worked for me.  I am interested in seeing Bopeep's answer to my ppi question.

Has anyone tried juicing fresh ginger root and drinking it? I saw one post where someone was able to eliminate their GERD/LPR symptoms by drinking 1 teasspoon of ginger root juice daily for up to 3 weeks. You drink it in the AM at least 1/2 hr before a meal.  Before I go out and purchase a juicer, I was wondering if anyone else has tried this remedy.

I"ve heard that ginger works, but I'm confused about that. Because isn't ginger bitter??  I mean, ginger doesn't work for me, personally because of that...

Bopeep, I am still waiting to hear about who told you to take 3 PPIs. I am wondering if I should do the same...

I took Pariet (Rabeprozole) 20mg 3 times a day and it started to work. Unfortunately I can't take them long term because of the side affects/allergies! My GP (doctor) prescribed it for me. :-)

Is a GP doctor a general practitioner or is it a specialist like a gastroenterologist?  Maybe a GP is a gastro doctor in another country?????

A GP is a general practitioner...BoPeep, what is Pariet?  Never heard of it!  Are you from America?  Do you think it would be safe to take Prevacid 3 times a day?

Friendlygal,

Been awhile since we talked...I'm sorry you're still having so much trouble with LPR.  It's always best to ask your doc when you want to take more medicine.  What dose are you taking? It evidently isn't working or you wouldn't ask about taking more.

I've read that LPR doesn't respond as well to PPI treatment which is sad.  I wonder why they don't come up with something just for LPR.  Many docs say they don't know that much about LPR.   If the meds were working for you and are not anymore, this is what my doc told me. He said that in some people, their bodies are efficient at getting rid of the drug so it needs more to do the job.  If that's the case, then your body is already low on the prevacid which means you could probably take more but I wouldn't do it unless your doc said to. 

Why haven't you pursued the surgery route?  Take care...

sillylilly, I CAN'T have surgery because of my esophageal motility issues.  They say that I would be miserable if I would have it.  So it's not because I didn't pursue it.

Nothing has ever worked for my LPR.  I've been on prevacid for twice a day for at least a year.

Yes GP is General Practitioner. I am in the UK. Pariet is a trade name for Rabeprozole. I have had some of the other PPIs 3 times day aswell but not Prevacid.

friendlygal - I have moility issues and have just had the Nissen. I am having a more difficult time than others with my throat. I am suffering a lot of spasms so am still on liquids and purees at room temperature. I will be 4 weeks out tomorrow and am going to speak to my surgeon to see if we can do anything about these spasms as they are making it difficult to move on to more solid foods. I don't have any heartburn though and the burning in my throat is 98% better! :-)

Bopeep, as part of what may or may not be motility issues, I burp often.  So doctors say that I'd be miserable after the Nissen since you can't burp again after it.  The best GI's in town won't let me get the surgery, so I'm sure that I can't.

I'm glad that you don't have burning in the throat anymore, that is awesome.

sillylilly, Good to hear from you again. I just recently got back on the forum for now...I responded to what you wrote in another post(about making choices).  I said that, in regards to what we were talking about, it's not about making choices-- no doctor wants to give me surgery.  We are not all in the same situation and not everything you say can work for everyone.  I also mentioned thatI DID try DGL, it just didn't work.

Somehow we got off on the wrong foot I think; I wasn't trying to say you should have surgery but trying to tell you that there are other choices besides the Nissen. I understand that we all have different issues with this horrible condition and no one thing works for all.   My only motive in giving you the link to the article is because the Hill procedure is NOT A WRAP  and they did a study where many patients with motility issues did good with the Hill procedure.  It's in the article.  If you have these issues, I thought maybe you should look into the Hill.    Also, you can burp and vomit with the Hill most of the time.  I know of two people who have had it recently and they both can burp and one of them had huge issues with LPR (not sure about her motility). So with the Hill, the issue of motility and burping wouldn't keep you from finding a cure for your problem.  The Hill is less anatomically disruptive than the NIssen.  The recovery is the same and less chance of gas bloat.  Plus a person can begin to exercise  quicker and not worry about the wrap slipping because their isn't one.   

The biggest problem with the Hill is that the doctors who do it are all in the Northwest, Seattle and Portland.   This is a big factor depending on where you live. But Dr. Aye has people come from all over the world to get the Hill; he's very renowned in his field.  Anyway, that's what I know about it and it just seemed that it might be something that might work for you if you are interested.

        Hi,

           Hope someone can answer this.....what is the differance between LPR and Gerd?

           I assumed I had Gerd but, never asked my Dr. for the diagnosis.  I am on Prylosec 40. mgs a day since my refluxing has increased over the past two months.  

           Are the symptoms of LPR differant than Gerd?

        I am seeing my Dr. in two weeks since I just finished the antibotics that treat H Pylori and will ask him his opinion at that time but, in the mean time would love some feedback on this.

That's simply not true! I can do ruddy big burps! And I know a lot of other people on this forum who have had the Nissen can burp too. I could burp straight away but it took a couple of weeks to be able to do a big one! cool I think in the past when they used to do the wrap very tight this might have been the case but with the floppy wrap they do nowadays I don't think it is as much of a problem.

TCML- Hi there! LPR is reflux in the throat as opposed to coming up from the stomach. The symptoms are lump in throat, choking feeling, swallowing problems, hoarseness, difficulty breathing. I was told that my throat was holding the acid and was unable to wash it away by swallowing which then causes damage to the throat and motility problems and then it is a vicious circle. GERD tends to be heartburn and pressure in chest, burning in throat and mouth. It can cause asthmatic type symptoms when you aspirate acid into you lungs. In both cases getting rid of the acid is the aim. :-)

Actually, I think that's not true.  In LPR, it can STILL come from the stomach (why ELSE are there People with LPR getting their stomachs wrapped)?it's just that it refluxes ALL the way to the throat in some people's case, like mine.  Mine shoots all the way to the throat. People with LPR usually don't have heartburn. about it being not true that you can't burp after the procedure, A LOT of people can't...But that is great that a lot of people still can.  So, that's great to hear, BoPEeP!  In any case, I am sure that the doctors I've been to have had good reason to not give it to me, considering that I've gone to very good ones!!!  Not everyone is eligible!

Does anyone know about how long it takes the throat to heal once acid has stopped damaging it? I've found that with the ppi's i no longer get heartburn or acid in my throat.
