Is this GERD or what!! So confused

Help!!  I need to know if anyone with GERD has these symptoms.  Don't think I get heartburn more just a feeling in my chest like something is coming up and a slight pain(acid..i presume).  Haven't (knock wood) had any trouble swallowing food although sometimes pills cause some burning sensations.

Have this all day everyday...somedays better than others.  Can't figure out if any food is causing bc I can eat the same thing 2 days in a row and won't have bad symptoms one day but the next day it is worse.

I can generally sleep @ night but notice when I wake up sometimes my esophagus feels like I starting a cold (if that makes sense). 

Anyway, am on 20 mg of Losec which doesn't seem to work.  This all started after developing h-pylori.  Eradicated that (proven through endoscopy and breath test)...but these symptoms cont'd and have actually worsened.

I should also let you know that I was extremely anxious (fearing i was going to die...preparing everyone for the worse).  Both my GP & Gastro doctor feel alot of it is anxiety related.  Took anti-depressants (37.5 mg Effexor) and still I am symptoms.

I have to admit...I am totally obsessed by this but how can you not be.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Eugenia, go back to the GI doc and talk to her/him. I have chest pain all the time and regurgitation along with acid. I understand that it feels like you’re catching cold or a sore throat. You may need a better medicine (proton pump inhibitor). Hope this helps. Anxiety can cause these symptoms; so, don’t stop your Effexor but talk to your GI guy.

Sometimes it can take trying a few different GERD medications to find the one that works for you. A call to your GI may help you.

I find that when I am anxious, my GERD is worse. So, if the Effexor is helping your anxiety, keep with it.

Hi Dakotagirl, sounds like u have the same problems I have, today was a nightmare for me I had esophageall manometry done, no sedation in other words they ran a tube the size of a pencil or water hose ha, up my nose and down in my tummy to see how well i can swallow, duhhh, pretty well I think, anway I am to have hiatial hernia surgury in 2 wks, at least i will be sleep, horrible was not the word to describe it.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I recently had a horrible heartburn episode. I started with a tightness in my chest and a lump in my throat and loss of appetite. I felt horrible and went to the emergency room but they couldn't figure out what was wrong so sent me home saying I had a cold. The next day it continued and got even worst. I felt like I couldn't get a good breath of air and couldn't swallow very well. I couldn't eat, couldn't focuse on anything. I have never been a person to get depressed and am always one to see the brighter side of things but all of a sudden I found myself feeling down, couldn't sit down and talk to anyone, didn't want to do anything and couldn't work. I did the same and felt like I was going to die so I went to the hospital again and this time they said I had gastritis and sent me home to take maalox. This didn't help much so I got myself on prilosec and after about 2 days had no change and again had the problem with breathing so ended up going to hospital a 3rd time. This time they pretty much flat out told me they could do nothing because didn't have the equipment to look down my throat and to go with a gastro. I had scheduled an appointment but would not be for 2 weeks. That entire week was the hardest week I have ever had and truthfully I kept trying to do things as usual and try to feel good but for some reason the issues I was having brought me completely down and it wasn't anxiety for me. I try to remain calm and not stress myself but it was really bad and couldn't shake off the depression. Finally after a week of taking the prilosec and maalox, I started improving. I got my appetite back, no more depression, no more knot in my throat or chest tightness and I could breathe just fine now. I still am getting occassional heartburn but not like that last time. I am scheduled to see my gastro Dr this week so am looking forward to getting this under control once and for all.
