Weight Gain and Weight Loss with PPIs

I have had Gerd for close to 20 years.   I am 48.    about 4 and a half years ago I had a endoscopy to confirm my Gerd.   I was put on Nexium which worked really well.   After about 6 months I was able to skip a day here and there and be Gerd free.   After a year a so I notice I had put on 20 lbs without really changing my eating habits.    In the last three months, I have tried really hard to lose those extra pounds but the weight didn't want to come off.    So I thought I would try to go off the Nexium and see what would happen.   Well after the Nexium got out of my system, the weight started to come off.    I was wonder is this is just me or could weight gain be a side effect of PPIs.   

In the last month I have had the 24 hour ph test and another endosopy.   I now have a medium size hiatal hernia.    I have an appointment with a surgeron tomorrow to talk about the nissen surgery.   We shall see if I am a good canadiate for the surgery.

I saw the surgeon and because I purposely went off the Nexium and because my BMI is over 35 he will not do the surgery.    If I had Barrett's or cancer he would do the surgery.    So I am going back on the Nexium and hopefully continue to lose weight and maybe I will ask again in 6 months.   I might try another PPI which may not cause the weight gain.    My surgeon also said he had never heard of weight gain being a side effect of ppis.

Thanks everyone for sharing you stories on this forum.   It has really help me deal with my Gerd and to know I am not crazy about some of the symtoms I am having.
