Question about Omeprazole ??????

    I recently started taking them yesterday but in the back of the box it says may take 1 to 4 days for full effect .

                       My question is that I woke up with heartburn and i had trouble sleeping because of it , so what i wanna know is that if i can take a anti-acid for fast relief mean while for fast relief?

My pcp and my GI dr both have said that taking things like tums, rolaids is perfectly fine with PPIs, which are proton pump inhibitors, which is what omeprazole is. I've read on here that a lot of the posters take gaviscon (sp?) it's the liquid anti-heartburn that also sooths the esophagus as it goes down. Now as far as the OTC Zantac, which are different than Tums... I know several reflux sufferers that take that as well as their PPI, but I'd say only with Dr recommendation. But as far as Tums and the like, it's fine.

Are you taking the OTC? I took that a long time, but eventually the 20mg 1x a day dose wasn't doing anything for my reflux. I read somewhere that the OTC omeprazole isn't ideal for long term use, I think and could be wrong on this please someone correct me if I am, it's because of what the medicine is made with (possibly mercury but can't remember really) versus the prescription strength which is more ideal for long term use... but of course that requires trip to you dr and authorization by your insurance. If you continue to suffer more than a few weeks I'd at least see your primary care dr.

I've been on Omeprazole (20mg) for over 2 years and my doctor just recently changed me on to 40mg Nexium as he says this is better as Omeprazole can limited the vitimins, calcium etc your body absorbes more so than the Nexium.

I still take Pepto Bismol every night before bed.

Has anyone had any unwanted side effects from Omeprazole - I started about a week ago and feel dreadful!
I haven't taken one today because I was so bad yesterday. Felt sick and a mother of all headaches and so tired. Also pains in my stomach.
I was so hopeful that this would sort me out! - was I too hasty in stopping them?

Hi, this is Kitt.

I take Omeprazole (Prilosec) and did not have any problems with it as far as side effects.  You may want to check in with your Physician to see if another PPI is a better choice for you.

There is a new drug recently added to the PPI arsenal.  Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate (Trade name  Zegerid) Unlike predcecessors, however, it is the first and only immediate-release oral PPI .  It not only provides rapid release of its active ingredients, but continous acid control as well.  Dosing is once daily.

I used to take Omeprazole and while on it, when I had a GERD attack, my doctor told me to take Zantac anywhere from 75 to 300mg.

    I dont do so well with Ranitidine , It made me have bad side effects . . .  . .
