Having Upper Endoscopy a little scared!!!!!

Im 36 yrs old and I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux in 2004 but it has gotten severe so much acid I vomit I'm nauseauted often because I can taste the sourness nasty acid in my mouth everythng I eat gives me gas, diarrhea, really bad stomach pains wher I am hunched over. so i went to see my Gi she thinks I might be allergic to wheat beacuse of all these problem and also beacuse I have arthritis so she presecribed me nexium which I take daily I also have a scheduled ultrasound today she wants to make sure I don't have Kidney stones or problems with my Gaul Bladder beacuse I constantly have pain in my abdomen worst on my right side sometomes on my left and the pain can't be anything to do with my Gynecologist as I had a full hysterctomy last year. I also have a schedule upper endoscopy on 9/19/08 is there anything I should be worried about is this really going to put things in perspective or is it just another test. I just want to feel better I'm on toooooo many medications as is with this, Psoratic Arthritis, Allergies, Migraine Headaches, and taking estrogen pills since Hysterctomy. I'm sorry Guys I'm just so tired and frustrated I just want to feel better enough to enjoy a walk, or play with my kids without being tired in bed, in pain wher I can't walk or hunched over in pain. Can somebody anybody give me some insight. Thanks PR Glo     

An upper endoscopy is one of the easiest diagnostic tests. All you have to do is not eat/drink for several hours before the procedure. They knock you out for a nice nap - you wake up and it's over. Hopefully then you have answers too :)

Have you looked up Celiac Disease to check the symptoms against yours? If you test positive for this, a gluten free diet makes it much easier and will make you feel so much better.

Life is very difficult when you don't feel well. You see so much passing by while you're curled up in pain. Venting here helps! So many people can empathize :)

Guess what. I did my first (and only so far) endo last October-totally awake, no sedation at all. I am scared of any type of sedation so the dr said that it was no problem to do it awake. It lasted maybe a total of 5 minutes. What is uncomfortable-yes. Was it horrible? No. I gagged a lot...felt it moving around a bit but that was it! I just listened to my doctor talk to me and the music he was playing. If you just calm yourself you wont gag as much!

I have to get a colonoscopy next due to a constant left sided pain-that I am scared of!

Do you think your joint pain is from  your GERD? Is it migratoty joint pain? The reason I ask is I have had that big time lately and have undergone a TON of tests--all cleared so far.

I just had an upper endoscopy last week.  It was my second one. It's nothing like the colonoscopty.  It wasn't bad at all.  There isn't much of a prep for it.  You have to stop some medications before hand, but your doctor will tell you which ones.  The day of the procedure, you can't eat until afterwards.  Nothing after midnight the night before.  They start an IV in the prep room.  They spray the back of your throat and give you something in your IV and you just go to sleep.  It doesn't take long.  When you wake up they give you something to drink.  Once they're sure you're swallowing ok you're ready to go. 

 

You can't drive at all that day.  I slept off and on on the way home and napped for a while at home.  You may feel like there's something in your throat for a couple of days, if they took a biopsy, but that's about it. 

 

So don't worry too much about the test.

For Short-term treatment of an active Duodenal Ulcer the usual dose is 20 mg once a day.

Treatment of Duodenal Ulcers caused by H. Pyori is treated in combination therapy with Biaxin the usual dose is 40 mg. per day for 14 days and followed by 20 mgs per day for an additional 14 days.

The recommended adult oral dose for the treatment of patients with symptomatic GERD and no esophageal lesions is 20 mg daily for up to 4 weeks. The recommended adult oral dose for the treatment of patients with erosive esophagitis and accompanying symptoms due to GERD is 20 mg daily for 4 to 8 weeks.  I have been taking it or anothe PPI for a couple of years.

You should talk this over with your Doctor as at one time I was on a higher dose but have weaned back down to the 20 mg once daily.
