I am very interested to know what kind of pain you experience when suffering from GERD other than the obvious burning/acidic form of pain. Do you also get actually aching type pains in your stomache area also?

Hi. mike. I get pain in my chest just to left of my sternum that radiates down my arm. It feels like a tightness. When it first occured about 10 years ago, I went through the heart attack tests and they decided it was GERD. The pain can be quite intense at times. I don't get much burning but I have acid in my throat and nose. I still have pain that is not controlled effectively by any medication. I'm working on getting the tests to justify a Nissen. Hope this helps.
Right now I have a pain that goes all the way to my left elbow.

I am rather concerned becaue that is not the pain i get generally, although I do experience occasion chest and arm pain :/. My pain is in my upper right quadrant mainly but very frequently in the centre aroound the sternum and right upper quadrant also. Pain also radiates to my back under the shoulder blades, both sides. Best way i can describe it is feeling like i have been kicked in that area. Bruised and battered.

I do suffer horrible burning and stinging from my stomache to my throat and have had post nasal drip for a few years, steadily getting worse i think. I also tend to burp a lot also. I am concerned. I am eating very well though and dont have problems swollowing my food.

The tests are slow in coming. So far for my problems I have had Colonoscopy, H-Pylori breath test and ultrasound. I guess an endoscopy will be next.

Hi, Mike... I have pain in the middle chest area very slightly off to the right side. Sometimes it also radiates a little farther right towards my right shoulder. Also sometimes I feel like it's going straight back to my back right next to my right shoulder blade. I just had an endoscopy to see if there was an obvious reason for the pain. I have a hiatial hernia and severe reflux (that was revealed 2 1/2 months ago by barium swallow) and in the endo this past Wed the dr said he biopsied a small area of inflammation. Haven't gotten the biopsy results back. He said he thought my pain could be coming from esophagial spasms, but I don't think it feels like a spasm, and I have had them before and to me a spasm feels more like sharp, seezing going up my esophagus toward my throat and jaw and only lasted a few minutes. This pain is like a soreness that lasts several hours sometimes all day.

I don't take ibuprofen to see if that would help because as you know NSAIDS are terrible on the stomach, so I don't know if that would help the pain or not. Have you tried any kind of meds like ibuprofen? I've wondered sometimes if my pain is GERD related at all, I've wondered if I need a chest xray to rule out lungs, and I've also considered something muscular in the chest, but I'm just not sure.

Hope you find your answers and if you do post them here maybe it will help someone else with their own mystery.

If I were you I'd want a barium swallow while I waited on the endoscopy to be done. They are quick and easy to schedule and can show a lot of what's going on in the esophagus and stomach.

I get pain on my left side right on top of my heart. Its a quick stabbing feeling, what I would imagine a heart attack to be like--I cant breathe in all the way or it hurts more. That is my worst symptom of this...

I get a really bad sore throat sometimes when I wake up in the morning, and chest tightness.

My stomach manages to burn and ache at the same time when I'm hungry, I don't know how it manages it. The pain radiates to a large part of my back as well. :x

Usually an endoscopy will reveal the source of the problems, so... Good luck!

Gerd symptoms are over the place. I have burning in my left ear where it feels like the acid is traveling all the way up my ear canal. Throat burning and pain is common along with the chest burning. You can also have a burning in the top of the stomach and stomach pain can be the result of a hiatal hernia pushing up into the esophagus. Many people have a lump or globus feeling in their throat. When these symptoms get severe enough, especially people who have a hiatal hernia, vomiting is also common. These symptoms can progress where you have ulcers and strictures in the esophagus that can be very painful. Many people experience regurgitation of food especially when bending over or lifting.

If you are having these symptoms, please see your doctor and get scoped to find out what's going on.

Oh I can feel for all of you as I have the same things. I get pain that starts in the chest, goes into the back more on the left side though. Then, if I lay down I start burping, but it doesn't completely relieve the pain. I also get spasms/palpitations. I have had the heart tests as well, since I was convinced it was a heart attack too. All is clear in that dept. but it still can make my worry sometimes.

I would get pain in my mid chest in the middle of the night, always waking me out of a sound sleep, and going right up into my throat, just miserable.  I thought why me, but obviously I am not alone.  What got rid of my pain was not protonix or nexium, it was an anti inflammatory drink called Haldi.  Ask at a whole foods market or haldi4health online.  They did more for me than probiotics of pharmaceuticals ever did.  And I just drink 1 bottle daily.  Good luck,

Welcome............well you got some great responses and as sillylillly said "Gerd symptoms are all over the place."

Atypical symptoms include epigastric discomfort which would answer your question "Do you also get actually aching type pains in your stomache area also?

I hope you get some results from your tests soon.  the waiting is the hardest part.
