Well i come here for advice... im 21yr old male, and have been having throat problems/stomach problems for last 2months. My stomach has improved over this time and is ok, only problem now is my throat. Ive had endoscopy, including biopsy etc, everything looks perfect. However durign this time i have had reoccuring strep throat due to lack of knowledge my girlfriend was an asymptomatic carrier of the bacteria reinfecting me over and over..

Im on antibiotics to get rid of the strep once again and its in the process really. My throat symptoms seem to fluxuate usually discomfort in the neck and swallowing, however i also get on and off a unpleasent irritating feeling under my sturnum, that is constant and maddening. I take prilosec and honesetly i dont know if it helps. How can i even know if this is gerd? All i can say is its driving me nuts, this constant discomfort! Doesn't seem like the dr's even diagnosed gerd other than stipulation.

During all this time only real diagnoses ive had is strep , and small hiatal hernia. Does this really sound liek gerd, what can i do to help myself? Its driving me crazy and is by far the worse today thats it been ever. (not to mention i was about a week without it.)

Also prior to my stomach pain incident, which started this all, i've never had heartburn or anything like this in my life.

What is GERD?

GERD stands for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. "Gastro" refers to the stomach. Esophageal refers to the esophagus , the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Reflux means to back-up or flow backwards. GERD is a condition in which acid, bile and partially-digested food in the stomach back up into the esophagus

If you have not seen a Gastroenterologist, now may be the time to make an appointment to see if you have GERD or something else going on.

Well i did have a endoscope, dr said all looked fine and i might have some acid reflux and gave my prilosec and i went on my way. However i did not have the sternum pain for two weeks during this time. Only throat pain. So i thought my acid reflux gave up a bit. But alas today its worse than its ever been. Sternum pain, hard time swallowing, waterbrash, tons of crap in my throat, bit of a dry cough.

Im hoping my GI calls me back tommorow, he didn't today.

My question is, does gerd make you suffer all your life? Does it always have a large chance of complications? If treated does it always have to be a serious medical condition.

Each person's GERD is unique to them.  Many people are very ill and need surgery while others do well on medications. Only your Physician can tell you if you have a serious medical disorder with your GERD. Many people live without a lot of pain with their GERD.

I hope your physician gets back to you soon.

hi. i also have gerd, and have been taking omprezole 20mg x 1 day for the last 18mnths and thakfully have had no pain, apart from a couple of times when i've not taken the tabs for a few days. hope this is helpfull
