What exactly can you eat if you have GERD?  It seems that there is very little you can eat.  Does anyone have any recommendations on a good diet I could follow.  Also what would be the best lifestyle modifications I could do to stop the GERD.  I've been taking Nexium 40mg twice daily but want to get off of this medication.

Eat healthy is what doctor will tell you. Which is easier said than done as fast food has become a way of life.
The advice I was given was avoid things like greasy,Spicy foods,citrus,caffeine these can all make matter worse not better. That means Lean meats such as Chicken,Turkey,Fish are on the list just avoid the condiments for now untill you figure out what is going on look at a thread on this post with the title (7 days of Nexium) Riverotter has some very good advice when it comes to life style changes and finding out what is going on. As for me as alot of questions before going on the PPI they can be a double edged sword and if you want to get off them again have a weaning off plan do not just quit cold turkey. I hope this helped

I occasionally take nexium when it gets bad but have been on pariet (20mg which is the same as nexium just half strength )for about 4 years now, its partly the magnesium which helps you , so you could probably get away with taking just magnesium as supplimental vitamins but doesn't last as long as nexium ,pariet or prevacid .warning too much magnesium can shut down your liver and or kidneys but if you choose that path consult your doctor first if you really want to get away from the nexium .

Regarding diet personally I have found getting dairy out of my life works the best . My wife doesn't think its what I eat but rather than following the proper guidlines I overdose ie 3 oz of meat instead of eating the whole 10oz steak and maybe even a second or half a bag of almonds instead of eating the recommended 5 to 7 peices per day . You can eat the two steaks or half bag of almonds but you better burn it off ...yeah I'm one of those people who can eat more than an extra large pizza , the two steaks , or munch on a bag of peanuts for the entire duration or length of a movie ...of course not anymore but once in awhile it happens .

You will get information on alkaline way of eating to heal yourself from GERD by checking on all my past postings.
It's incredible to me that more people aren't willing to eat alkaline and get over this illness!!!

You have to educate yourself as to which foods are alkaline and which are acidic.....
Basically it means almost becoming a vegetarian. Why not try it for a while if you can heal yourself??? Not that big a deal.....I did it!!! You do have to give up coffee, dairy, meat, fish, pasta, rice, alcohol, soda, sugar!!! It's not easy, but I would have given up anything to feel better. I did and in two months I was over my GERD.

I ate millet (sustained middle eastern world for thousands of years) and quinoa (sustained south americans for thousands of years) and tofu for protein. I also ate avocados, watermelon (most alkaline fruit), dried figs, dates were great since they provided the sweetness I missed from giving up sugar. There were many alkaline vegetables that I also added to my diet.

Eat small meals a few times a day....don't eat a few hours before going to sleep.

Sleep on your left side (stomach acid cannot creep up into your esophagus) and with a raised torso if you want on a wedge pillow. I believe the left side sleeping is the most important.
