Not be Able To Vomit and Nissen......

I have a question in rergards to the nissen prodcedure and vomiting. As I see it ( and correct me if Im wrong) vomiting is a way the body rejects harmful bacteria, parasites or basically something that does not agree with you in the quickest way. Now. If you have  the nissen procedure and one in unable to vomit and your stomach is pumping the vomit upwards, what happens? How does the stomach get rid of any parasites or bacteria or food that is bad. For example, if you eat something that is rotten for example and your body wants to expell  it and it can than that means that the stomach has to now digest somethig rotten and let it travel through the intestines where it will be partially absorbed by the body. Is this correct? Couldn;t one get very sick this way?

What happens when you have the stomach flu? Will your body just resort to diahhera? Is there anyone here that has the nissen procedure and has encountered food poisnoning, stomach flue that led to vomiting? Or just vomiting for any reason? What was it like? What did it feel like? did it ruin the wrap?

I agree with Oakley, good question, and I have wondered this too.

I will be anxious to hear from the members who have had the procedure.

For some, yes it is a positive and good outcome...for some not. It is good to hear both sides of the story and weigh all the options. I don't think I agree that it has saved you from cancer for sure, hopefully so ! , but I have watched a friend die from lung cancer who never smoked and I don't think that is a safe statement to make. I also don't know if it is fair as I cannot have the surgery and do worry about cancer. Just an opinion from the sidelines.

Denise, I think the relief from the pulmonary problems is the greatest benefit...at least the most overt benefit. My FEV is so much better as is my ox rate and pulmonary function! I am so happy to hear you're experiencing the same thing; it took me about two months to realize the constriction wasn't there, but I didn't have an infection or as serious a problem...mine was more bronchiolitis and damage that way.

Just a note too, I continue to have relief; it hasn't come back in the sense that you and I would think of it, but there are times when something sets off that same constriction and inflamed feeling in my lungs and throat. Smoke is a big one for me, it's still a trigger and I avoid it like the plague!! The good news is, it doesn't set of a wheezing, coughing, call the ambulance, I'm coughing up a lung fit, like it used to! I don't even carry my inhaler with me anymore!!!

Hi Ladies,
Just joined today. I was reading your posts and I also had the nissan wrap. however my esophogus keeps going closed on me, I go every 3 to 6 months to have my esophogus opened up. I am due to go in sometime this month, I go to a well know hospital and am put under every time. I don't know why this is happening, either do the Doctors. If you have ever had this or heard of it can you please let me know? I am a 52 year old women. I had the surgery 5 years ago.

Hi tracks83   I had the nissan done 5 years ago,  I have 3 children the 2 boys had it done when they were each 7 years old.   none of us are able to vomit, however when we get sick we try and vomit, all we do is get dry heeves awful awful noises.  I take perenazone (spelling?) it takes away the feeling to vomit, and also lets you sleep for awhile to calm you down.  my boys are now 30 and 27 they are doing great, better then I am.

yes i also have the anti nausea med. however when my esophogus goes closed usually at the top in the center and at the bottom. when that happens nothing helps, I vomit and whatever is in the esophogus comes right up. I was at a restraunt once and it happened in my plate and then at the supper table already, last night I took 2 anti nausea pills I could not stop dry heaving. It is time for me to go have my esophogus opened up. I go to Johns Hopkins Hospital for this. they think also that my nissan was done too tight. Thanks for any information you may have. I usually loose 2 days of work for this, the last time I had it done was october 2008 so it has been about 4 months.

after i had the nissan i was being dilated every 3 to 4 weeks , now for 3 and a half years to 4 years i get dialated every 3 to 5 or 6 months. It is time for me to go again, i get fluid stuck sometimes, I use to grind up my food with a baby food grinder. I have trouble with meat, i usually eat fish. I'm sorry it happens to you also, but I am happy to hear i am not alone.

Hello, I am VERY new top this and I am searching for information. I am scheduled to visit a surgeon to schedule a Nissen Fundoplication procedure. I have GERD, Hiatal Hernia and Berretts Esophagus. I am have been taking medication for about 4 years and it really isn't helping. I am still experiencing stomach issues. I still have to monitor very closely what I eat and I can not eat after 6:00p.m. I am scared to death of getting Esophageal Cancer and I have decided this is the procedure I need to have done. I have been told been told that medication just masks the symptoms and will continue to agrivate the Barretts to the point that it WILL turn into cancer. I am very concerned about not being able to vomit and share a lot of the same thoughts as the earlier person who posted. I guess I just would like to know if the consensus of this group is there are more positive experiences than negative? I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

First, as this post is very old, it's probably a better idea to have posted this as a new post to ensure it gets the attention it deserves. Sometimes these things get buried if you attach new comments to really old posts and I would hate for your concerns and questions to get ignored because of it.

Anyway, on to your question.

Most importantly, the incidence of Barretts Esophagus turning into Esophageal Cancer is very low. Less than 1% of all Barretts cells will turn in to a cancerous event if they go untreated. That said, you're on the right path to getting treatment and stopping further damage.

I'll use my case as an example. I had really bad GERD/Reflux for many years to the point where I couldn't eat or drink anything. My esophagus was so badly damaged and scarred that my Nissen surgery was over 5 hours because it was so difficult for the surgeon to see and maneuver through all the scar tissue and erosions. I had a 4cm ring of Barretts cells encircling my esophagus at the junction to my stomach at the time of the surgery. At my one year follow-up endoscopy, all the Barretts cells were completely gone and my esophagus is healed. It'll be two years next month and I feel fantastic. I haven't taken a single medication since my surgery.

The inability to vomit shouldn't concern you. Unless you're prone to vomiting often for whatever reason, it's not something you should worry about. My surgeon said it would be difficult, but that if my body wanted to get something up and out, that it would do it. After your surgery, you can ask your doctor for anti-nausea medications that will help control this. I haven't needed to take them ever, but I know that some people do. It's all based on what your predisposition is.

I would recommend starting your own thread so that you can capture as much information for yourself as you can. This will help as you begin to plan for your own surgery as your information will be all in one place instead of spread out over several topics.
