Has anyone been on meds for acid reflux/gerd where it has simply just stopped working?

I have not but I do have break through sx and so far have managed to get through them by correcting my eating issues.......I know when I eat certain things that I will get reflus or heartburn.

So it is a balance between the right choices and using the medication for me.

Not all PPI work the same way. They are all a bit chemically different. One may work wonders for you and not for another person.It happened to me twice, and I had to switch to another PPI. Ask your doctor to give you samples of other PPI's and see which one works for you best. Dont just go out and buy whatever he prescribe,cause it might not work for you. Make sure you have him give you sample packs of PPI's to take home and try, because as you and I know these medication cost an harm and two legs yeah yeah

Well I used achiphex and now it does not work (2 yrs later). Not sure if its due to my body getting immune to it or perhaps another medical issue like my pancreas...

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis include nausea, upper abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms of chronic pancreatitis include pain after eating and, if advanced, diabetes mellitus and diarrhea from digestive failure.

Is this the first time pancreatitis has been mentioned as a cause of your problems?

I hope your problem turns out to be a simple change in your PPI.

Do keep us up to date on how you are doing.

yeah. I've been taking prevacid for 5 or 6 years now. In the fall, it seemed to just stop working. All of my gerd symptoms just came back. I thought too, that maybe i got used to it, and now it doesn't work anymore. not sure.

Thank you for posting the exact question I'm suddenly struggling with. For the past 3 weeks or so, my meds are just not working like they used to. I'm going in to see my diagnosing physician on Thursday and will share info afterwards.

I did have a nasty allergic reaction to an antibiotic about 2 months ago, and my reflux flared badly during that, so I'm curious to learn whether that had any relationship to these new problems.

Well my gi doctor said that sometimes people will build up a tolerance to a ppi and they just switch to another. That happened to me with prevacid. I took it for 10 years with no problems and then it quit working. I then took protonix for 3 years and it quit working. I'm now taking Kapidex (a reworked version of prevacid) it seems to be helping although I do get some break through episodes.

My meds have really given up today. I'm so frustrated I could spit nails. In fact, that's what it feels like is in my throat right now. Drat - a year of pretty decent relief and now back to square one. I even had a brief (1 minute) shortness-of-breath attack at work today - all reflux-related, as it's so darned familiar! Hope tomorrow's ENT appointment brings some new suggestions.
