Coughing after Surgery--also prednosone effects

Hi. I was just wondering. Has anyone ever had the experience of having a chronic cough during fundo recovery? If so, how did you deal with it? I'm having the surgery because of my unresolved lung issues, so that's not going away, and the docs have resolved to go ahead and hope for the best. Is it something that anyone has dealt with before? I'm, of course, worried of coughing up the repair.

Also, I developed a lung infection last week, and am now on antibiotic and prednosone. My lungs are back to their normal problem level at this point. They reduced the predosone as of yesterday, but they're going to have to give me a steroid boost during surgery because of my constant dependency on steroids due to my lungs, causing adrenal insufficiency. I am worried that the prednosone will slow the healing--I know it will. I just hope that my tissue is strong enough to sustain the surgical repair. Has anyone recovered while using prednosone. They're going to get me off as soon as possible, (generally I only use inhaled steroids), but I know it's not ideal. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it. I am aware that this is not a sure thing as far as resolving my asthma. Just as you said, the GERD has to be ruled out at least, so the docs can look in a different direction. My lungs have been bad for over four years, so I don't expect four weeks to clear them. They've been inflamed, and it'll take some time for that to resolve. I'm hopeful that it will help in the long run, but if it doesn't...at least I've tried. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the GERD is not the culprit until you get more time under your belt. The surgery itself was a challenge to your lungs. If you had general anesthesia, it's definitely a further assault on that very sensitive tissue.

Believe me, I'm expecting eating to be a long term recovery project. From what I've read other places on this forum, four weeks post op is just the beginning. I know it'll be a challenge.

You should be happy that you've got those four weeks behind you! You are getting closer and closer to normalcy...although I'm sure it will take many months. From what I hear, we'll always have some swallowing issues. Hopefully they'll be doable. I've resolved that I will surrender to the healing process and let it take me where it will. Hopefully I'll have the strength keep a positive attitude. It's definitely my intention.

The repair does a major revision to the GI tract, so hiccups, etc. are understandable. Hang in there, "Substance_D". There's still a chance that your asthma will respond to the surgery, and be happy to be GERD free!
