I've had this hot/burning feeling in my chest these past 2 days. I've never had this pain before. I have GERD. And i get reflux everyday. I have been taking Prilosec and it hasn't really been helping. I've also been taking tums too.

I'm scared that I may have an ulcer in my esophageous or my stomach. It doesn't feel like heartburn. It kinda feels like its in the back of my throat.

Does anyone with GERD get this?

Is there anyone on here that has had an ulcer and could tell me their symptoms? I'm REALLY worried

Good Morning,

Heartburn is the burning pain you feel in your chest. It happens when excess acids in your stomach flow up, or reflux, into your esophagus. This is one of my main problems. I am not sure you have heartburn but it certainly is a strong possibility. 

Sx of heartburn include

  • A burning sensation or sharp pain in the chest just behind the breastbone
  • Burning in the throat
  • An acidic taste in the back of the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • The feeling of food “sticking” in your chest or throat

    • Please do check with your physician if this is new for you and you have fears re the bruning sensation.

    HELLO I ALSO HAVE GERD AND HAVE BURNING IN MY THROAT... IM SCARED MYSELF THAT I HAVE ULCERS...MY GASTRO DR IS GOING TO BE DOING A COLONOSCOPY ON ME VERY SOON... I REALLY DONT KNOW IF THAT WILL SHOW ULCERS... BUT IM VERY NERVOUS...AS FOR MY THROAT...I HAVE THE BURNING AS WELL AS THE FEELING OF A LUMP AND AS I EAT SOMETIMES I FEEL THE FOOD GETS STUCK GOING HALF WAY DOWN..PLEASE FOLLOW THIS UP WITH YOUR DR...I KNOW YOUR SCARED...BUT ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE...WISHING YOU THE BEST....MICHELLE

    Hi Schuylermommy and Michelle,
    Each case is individual, so your doctors are the best ones to decide whether or not what you're experiencing is GERD or something else. I can just tell you my experience. When I would get a GERD flare up, I would experience a burning in my esophagus, and a feeling like a lump kind of behind my breast bone. Also, I would not be able to eat more than a quarter of a cup or so without feeling full, and could only eat the most gentle of foods. (I have a very reactive stomach, which would also be affected.)

    If what you have is a GERD reaction, it will take time for your esophagus (and possibly your stomach) to heal. The membranes are very delicate, and take time to get better. It would take me months to get things back to normal. It's important not to eat any GERD triggers (caffeine--and coffee of any kind because it's so acidic, chocolate, peppermint, fried foods, spicy foods, etc.) until you heal.

    I do think you should see your docs. Michelle, they would need to do an endoscope to see your stomach/esophagus. I've had that done at the same time as a colonoscopy, so if you're having symptoms like these, you should let your doctor know, so he can decide whether or not to add an endoscopy to your procedures.

    If your GERD is sending acid up your esophagus, Schuylersmom, you could get an irritation all the way up to your mouth...Many GERD sufferers have reflux that causes then to taste acid in their mouths.
