Hi All,

firstly Kitt, just wanted to let you know that following you advise I have started to see an therapist for my anxiety, I have only had one session with her so far and I did all the talking, I opened up like I have never done before and it did feel good to let it out, I have my second session with her this week.

my reflux is still not great, I went back to my GP (remember I am in the UK) and I talked to her about what was happening, I asked her did I need to be scoped again on a regular basis and she said no as they did not find Barretts at my last scope (March) I told her that the PPI's had not really worked with me and so she has prescribed me Ratadine, two tablets one in the morning and one at night, she said if I feel I am getting symptoms I should take them for a few days till it settles down.

my questions are, should I be more worried about my ongoing reflux, I have had lots of back pain in the last couple of weeks an sharp pain at the bottom of my sternum, having said that I have been suffering from really high levels of stress and anxiety over the last couple of weeks, so this could link into the symptoms being worse currently

I have also just started running as I need to loose a couple of stone in weight and also to help with the stress, I am running everyday and when I am out on the road my mind feels way better, but could the running be making my reflux worse?

also just to add, I have not taken any of the new tablets yet, as I am concerned that they could weaken my immune system and then make it more likely that I could get swine flu (a lot of people are getting it in the UK) and as I have asthma I am worried if I get it I will be in big trouble

anyway if anybody has any thoughts I would welcome them, its tricky to try and keep fact and fiction apart in my head at the minute, and I dont want to ignore my reflux and it get much much worse but also I dont want to rush in and demand surgery if its not needed

Kitt's on vacation, or she'd certainly be responding to your post. We're all trying to step in and help out while she's gone.

As far as the running goes...just be sure you don't run after eating. I couldn't even WALK after eating without kicking up my reflux.

Also, keep in mind that reflux (not even severe) can cause your asthma to be worse. My doctors had thrown their hands up and couldn't really help me with my asthma, because the GERD was constantly inflaming them. PPI's can help some people, but it wasn't enough for me. I finally had the surgery in February, and FINALLY, I can breathe again. My GERD had gotten progressively worse over the years, and this past year was unbearable. I was using the nebulizer 2-3 times daily, and was still coughing up lots of phlegm, and wheezing. Keep the GERD/asthma connection in mind as you explore what is going on with you.

I did not even have severe GERD...yet it was still enough to create lung problems.

I don't think that acid reducing meds do anything to your immune system. I'd be more worried that your GERD would put your lungs more at risk should you get the flu. Believe me, as a fellow asthma sufferer, I totally understand your worry about swine flu. I'm also a teacher, and will start back in September. At that point I'll be working in a cesspool of germs! (I teach little ones--grade 2)

You're in a good place. We'll do whatever we can to help you along, and if we can answer any questions, we'll gladly do so. So glad you're getting some help for your anxiety and stress. I've notice that if I can calm myself, my very reactive stomach feels much better.

thanks so much for the post, its so great to know people are out there who are interested and can lend moral support, glad Kitt has managed to get a holiday, her help and advise so far have been great, without her I dont think I would have gone for Therapy,

Hello,

 i'm new to this forum and I stumbled across your post, I've been thinking a long time about getting a nissen because of my GERD symptons can't seem to calm down, but i'm a little scared about having the surgery.

My gerd started after an acute gastritis on last christmas, it's weird because is it possible to get gerd after only 1 time of projectile vomitting?

Anyway, since that time, i've been feeling sick and have had a lot of nausea, i've seen a GI specialst and have had an endoscopy done, barium test, and a CT of the abdomen, which came back normal. The endoscopy showed an oesophagitis type A, so they perscribed me PPI and an antacid to take in the evening. My acid is gone, but my bloated feeling and nausea isn't. Every time I burp, it's just a juicy stumach fluid burp and not air, which is very frustrating, i feel bloated all the time.

Now, my question is, most of the people who have gerd, tend to feel pain under their left rib and left side of the chest. I have a severe pressure like pain under my RIGHT ribcage, but the docters just ignore that. So I was kind of wondering of any of you here have any experience here with this.

Also, I'm looking forward to your post on how the recovery from the nissen is evolving, I hope you're doing ok atm.
