LPR and Voice Changes

I saw my family doctor and he doubts I have LPR. He insisted that LPR leads to voice changes. Since my voice hasn't changed, it's unlikely to be LPR.

In all cases, does LPR lead to voice changes?

I do have moments of horseness.

Voice change with LPR is from person to person. Some people will lose their voice, some will become hoarse all the time, some (Like me) will see no change really, besides the occasional hoarseness. I make a strange sound that no dr has ever heard. It's random and not a belch or a hiccup. When explaining this to my ENT he suggested that it was due to the frequency of acid coming and it throws my vocal cords into spasm... making a noise.

Just all depends on you and your body. Heres what I do have... clearing my throat often, sore throat and the mucus like feeling in my throat when I swallow and the noise. I also sleep fine at night, but wake up with an awful taste in my mouth. I do have reflux that I can feel that comes all the way up into my mouth at times... My dr claims (I am skeptical on this) that my LES functions correctly, which in my opinion every other test they have run seems to contradict ...

Hi Marie... I have been on Prilosec (up to 80mg twice a day for a total of 160mg) aciphex, protonix, reglin, carafate, baclofen and prevacid. None of the above helped me. I was on some combination of the above from September 2008 until June 2009. I also had the 24 hour pH, BRAVO, barium swallow and manometry and 2 endoscopies between those dates as well.

So... here is what WAS the plan of attack... 150 mg of Zantac twice a day... BECAUSE... Apparently I was not responding to PPI's (Which most of the above are) so they were going with an H2 blocker... which is what Zantac is...

However... I was treated in early June for H. Pylori. Did the prev pac for 2 weeks... then was tested again in July (during which time you can not be on ANY ppi or h2 blocker because they will give a false report). I was tested positive AGAIN for H. Pylori i July... and just Friday ended 2 weeks of another round of 2 different antibiotocs, aciphex, zantac and pepto (which let me tell you was no easy task... I had a black tounge among other things for 2 weeks... the whole thing was black). So... now I will be on no meds again for at least another 2 weeks until I can test again for H. Pylori... then we will see where I stand...

That was kind a long version... but nothing has helped me so far. And I honestly dont know how big a part H. Pylori has played with my case.. I have been deemed the "special case" by my dr's because I follow no clear path to a diagnosis... I am all over the map.

But, I have pushed for a retest of the LES, and was told I did not need one... but will continue to push. "Your LES works fine and I dont know why acid come all the way to your thoracic level" is not a good enough answer for me.

Hi Marie,

They did not find a hernia when they did the 2 endoscopies, so I dont think I have one.

I dont know anyone that has a clicking sound when swallowing, but everyone has different effects from the acid coming up. Like I said, I make a noise randomly from my vocal cords that is unexplainable...

I wish you all the luck with the surgery that it will help!!
