I am 10 days post Nissen repair.  The last 2 days I have burning sensation in my throat and can taste acid coming up. I also have diarrhea about 5-10 minutes after I eat or drink. Other than those 2 things I feel pretty good, not much pain other than a little burning between my naval and breastbone. Can anyone help me out here??? I have slept in the recliner for the last 5 months... I just want my life back, and my husband wants his wife back>>>>  HELP!!!

The diarrhea happened to me the first time. I was told it is called dumping and can happen when the digestive tract is rearranged. That should get better with time. Sometimes you can still have some reflux when the wrap is still swollen also. I would get a hold of the surgeon and see what he/she thinks about the reflux feelings just to be safe.

Thanks Bill, I actually had my follow up late yesterday afternoon and he said the same thing about the swelling and still having a little acid. He advanced my diet to soft mechanical and last night I had a piece of fish and green beans. It was nice to be able to enjoy my meal and my 2 toddlers even beat me done eating for once!!! He said that the diarrhea should resolve with the advancement in diet but if it does not he would start me on Questran because in addition to my wrap I also had my gallbladder removed and a hernia repair. I also have been released to return to work on Monday and it will be about 2 1/2 weeks post op. Thanks for getting back to me... there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Want to ask this at what point did you all try caffeine/carbonated drinks??? I am a nurse and do rotating shifts..... I NEED my get up and go for those dreaded night shifts....

Bea jumped on the Pepsi really quickly and did pretty well. I waited about 4 weeks with both of my Nissens. Just have to go easy and not let too much gas build up.
Several of us that have had the Nissen also have had our gallbladders removed. Seems to be a trend. I had mine removed about 8 months before my first Nissen. I've had the bile induced diarrhea ever since. I switch between Questran and Colestid. The Questran seems to work a little better, but the Colestid is easier to take since it is a pill. Actually, since my redo I have a lot less issues with diarrhea. I don't think I have taken anything for about 2 weeks now.

Congratulations on your wrap! Welcome to the club! I noticed that whenever I ate something that irritated my wrap, I got some reflux feelings. My surgeon said that during the healing process, almost anything can happen, and that reflux was certainly possible. Also, though, the esophagus may interpret pain as reflux (I've heard it described as a "dumb organ" that can't differentiate between sensations.).

Before surgery, my reflux caused my asthma to be uncontrollable, and after surgery whenever I felt what I thought was reflux, I was fearful that the asthma would start up again. That hasn't happened, thankfully. My asthma is my best indicator as to the success of my wrap. So far, so good!

I don't think that most people find it helpful to drink carbonated sodas right away. Bea did sip away at a Pepsi all day in the beginning, and I'm sure it went pretty flat as the day went on. There's an option for you. If your stomach isn't reactive and can tolerate the acid, you could give regular coffee a try and see what happens. I think it would be better with food.

Good luck with your return to work. Just remember to follow your doctor's orders, and make sure you get lots of rest when you're home!

I have tried a few things that unfortunately have "gotten stuck". Does anyone have any pointers on what to do when that happens to help stuff go down that gets stuck??? What a scary feeling
