Anyone heard about the Reglan lawsuits and possibility of it being pulled from the market?

I was listening to a health show on the radio when the problems with reglan was brought up. Anyone heard anything?

I saw one of those class action law suite commercials not too long ago. A GI dr prescribed it for me, and when I saw another GI dr, he told me about the side affects and told me to be very careful with it. It can cause Parkinson like twitches and things like that. He said he had seen people who were on reglan develop the affects. I stopped taking it after about a week.

I took Reglan for probably a year or two nonstop, and suffered no side effects. At some point, after stopping for a few years, I went back on it, and after a time, developed twitches in my hands. I stopped it at that point.
Most doctors stay away from it because the side effects can be really bad. (Worm-like movements of the tongue sounds like fun, doesn't it?)

I was on 5mg of reglan for 4 months then 10 mg for 2 months and started developing spasms. My hands and arms would shake violently when I reached for the alarm clock in the mornings. I started dropping things. Very irritating! I stopped taking it myself and then told my doctor about the symtoms. She said it was wise to stop like I did. It had warnings it could cause these problems, so I watched for them. I've been left with a habit of rubbing my teeth together some.

I too was prescribed it, but only could stand it for a week. Glad I noticed the side effects right away and didn't take it very long.

me too. I was taking it for a 9days and noticed a difference in holding items even a pen. I discontinued it .as for a lawsuit ,yes i get a email sporadically about this.

My GI doctor discussed it with me when going over my initial test results 3 years ago.  At that time he said he considered it "last ditch" the same way he considers surgery because of the side effects.  The show I was listening to said it looks like it is under review and will most likely be pulled from the market because of the number of side effects people are now experiencing, the number of people whose side effects are now long term or permanent, and the rising number of deaths being report.ed

Glad I never took it.  My friend was prescribed it twice by her doctors but after hearing about the side effects she never filled the prescription.

I thought it was weird my doctor who prescribed it told me to pay close attention to the side effects and stop taking it if I had any.

My doctor refused to give Reglan, even though he felt I needed a motility drug. He had me on a similar Canadian medicine without the horrible side effects of Reglan - it's called Domperidon. It's perfectly legal to get it with a prescription. Your insurance probably won't pay for it, but it's not expensive. You order it online and have it delivered to your door! I paid about $50 including shipping for a 2 month supply.

It's been approved for use all over, just not in the US... but yet, they approve Reglan!

Unfortunately, it didn't help my issue, but if you need a motility drug, you should ask about it.

I took this the whole time I was pregnant! It was prescribed for morning sickness which I had the whole 9 months.

This is very scary to me. I've been taking it regularily for 2+ years. My doctors have never said anything about side effects. I started doing research beaucse I started to have some crazy symptoms - they even checked me for a brain tumor - but as it turned out it was all side effects of the Reglan. I stopped taking it 2 days ago and am having hot flashes every 1/2 hour. (It messed up my hormones). I'm hoping they stop once the med gets out of my system.

The average Reglan elimination half-life in individuals with normal renal function is 5 to 6 hr.

Half-life: time taken for blood concentration to fall to half its peak value after a single dose. This time may vary considerably between individuals.

Depending on your dose will determine how quickly your body eliminates the drug. Also each person is different and I have heard of some people doing well with weaning off of this med or stopping it and others felt symptomatic for up to 6-8 weeks.

Do discuss how your feeling with your physician.

Don't be scared. Just because you got some symptoms, doesn't mean it won't go away. I was on Reglan for many years, at bedtime, and never got any symptoms. I then went off for quite a while (I didn't find it particularly helpful), and when I went back on, noticed some twitches in my thumbs. Of course, by this time, I'd seen all the terrible side effects, so perhaps was a bit more aware. Anyway, long story short, I stopped Reglan, and had no adverse effects.
Relax. Most likely you'll not have any long-term effects.

Ok so this question for you all... they gave me liquid Reglan to take post Nissen if was or ever get nauseated.... what do you all take when you have the flu or start feeling nauseated??? I am terribly afraid of wrecking the wrap!!!!

Hi,
I got a script of Zofran from my surgeon, and don't go anywhere without them. Haven't had to use them yet, but I don't want to be damaging my wrap with dry heaves! My family doc gave me Compazine suppositories, but I think the Zofran tablets are more convenient. You just put them under your tongue and they melt away.

I was warned by members here that I should have nausea meds on hand at all times. I took them very seriously. The docs didn't automatically give me the scripts. I had to request them. I only got 10 Zofran tabs, because my surgeon said they're unbelievably expensive (about $10 each), and I didn't want to waste them. Hopefully I won't need them, anyway!

I've never heard of using Reglan for nausea--only to increase the speed of stomach emptying.

I have been using Phenergan since my first one 3 years ago and it doesn't work quite as fast as Zofran, but it isn't nearly as exspensive either. I don't leave home without them either. Well, I did 1 time with this redo and I spent 15 minutes in a restraunt bathroom. Esson learned AGAIN! I make sure I have them with everywhere I go.

Thanks for that info, Bill. At this point I still have plenty of Zofran, but should I become ill and need a different script I'll keep that in mind for sure.
