Heartburn returning despite PPI therapt

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? If so, please let me know if you went back to your doctor and what he did for you. I've been on Prilosec for over 10 years due to persistant heartburn from Gerd . It was the result of a hiatal hernia. For much of this time I was doing fine. about a week ago, I started having mild heartburn and excessive belching that would get me awake at night, despite using my Prilosec faithfully. I've been taking 20 mg of Prilosec faithfully every morning before breakfast. It appears as if the Prilosec might be loosing some of it's effectiveness. Any input would be appreciated.

I would definately go back to the dr. Before my Nissen, I was taking 3 Prilosec a day. It still was not working and that is when we decided after much testing that I needed the Nissen.

I went to a Bariatric surgeon who had many Nissen under his belt and did a loose full wrap. This was great because I did not experience any of the problems that a lot of people speak of such as feeling that food was stuck.

But maybe with a higher amount of Prilosec you will get better.

I'm on 40mg 2x a day dose of nexuim and a 300 zantac.
Sometimes you need more.
I'm going to have The EsophyX procedure in December.

Thanks Jayne and Joy! I have a call into my dr. Looks as if I'm going to need more than just 20mg at this point. Again, thanks for your input.

Hi, Gentlemank,
I've just recently been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus, and so I'm on nexium 40mg 2X/day. I'm hoping that will help reverse some of the cell changes. I'm new to all this so I don't have much advice to offer except I'd definitely go back to your doctor and have things checked out.

Thanks Bee23 and PAlady for your input. My dr. has upped my dosage to 40 mg per day so I'm hoping that will take care of it. Appreciate everyone's response.
