Hello all, new here. Throat and Heartburn problem after stopping Prevacid.

Greetings to all of you. I am a 29 yrs old male, perfectly healthy for my whole life, but had stomach problem out of the blue 2 months ago.

I went to my Family doctor two months ago, who thinks I am having gastritis. My doctor then prescribed me 8 weeks course of Prevacid, 30mg per day. I feel great after taking it for the first 2 weeks, but after that I start having indigestion problem, loose bowel movements, and lower abdominal pain. I didn't really pay much attention to these symptoms, since the medication helps with my stomach pain and my appetite.

My treatment ended 2 days ago. Yesterday I had the craziest heartburn in my whole life, my chest was on fire. I tried OTC antacid like maalox, didn't help, suffered for 2 or 3 hours more and then I decided to take maalox again, this time the maalox calm things down and I was able to sleep. This morning I had very bad heartburn after breakfast again, I took maalox again and this time it calms it down, and I haven't had very bad heartburn till now (I do have some burning feeling in my stomach and throat but its very mild).

Theres also this problem with my throat, I've noticed it after 2 weeks into Prevacid. There seems to be a lump just right behind my vocal chord, but thank god I don't have difficulty swallowing. I also have difficulty in burping, its not like I cannot burp, but sometimes I need to make an effort to burp, because the gas seems to be blocked by this lump in my throat, and I can burp as much as 30 times in 4 hours after a meal.

Can the Prevacid cause the side effect that I am experiencing ? And how come I start to feel heartburn first time in my life after stopping the PPI ? Does anyone else have that lump like feeling in their throat ?

I went and see another doctor today, he wants me to start Nexium and see how it works. I am now hesitating since I have had bad experience with Prevacid... whats everyone's opinon ?

You're suffering a rebound reaction from the Prevacid. Your doctor does not seem to know what he is doing. You can't take 30mg of Prevacid for eight weeks and then just stop cold turkey. You need to wean off of it slowly. When you take the medication, you stomach is not able to make as much acid, so it trys harder and harder to make acid. When you suddenly stopped taking the medication, it is like opening a dam and you'll get more acid than ever before.

You doctor should have stepped you down to 15 mg of Prevacid for several weeks, and then switched to something like Zantac for several weeks. Maybe he shouldn't have put you on Prevacid in the first place since you may not have been suffering from reflux at all in the first place. The mis-use of PPI medication can cause acid reflux in normal people.

If you go on Nexium you will just get back into suppressing the acid and setting yourself up for another rebound reaction when you stop it.

Thank you for the input. I browse the web for awhile looking for the rebound effect, a study have shown that PPI usage in people that don't have acid reflux will cause acid reflux for 2 to 3 months ! I guess I shouldn't be on Prevacid in the first place since not much diagnosis have been made to confirm that I had gastritis or acid reflux. I am feeling okay so far, and I won't start on the nexium. Hopefully my stomach acid level returns to normal after 2 to 3 weeks, btw I am having a barium swallow done in a week and an Endoscopy done in 2 weeks.. praying that they won't find anything serious... kinda worry right now.. I will keep this post updated, thank you all.

Not intended to be negative. I'm just a label reader.

"Stomach Comfort" mentioned above contains: calcium carbonate, alginic acid (from kelp), wintergreen oil, papaya fruit, slippery elm bark, licorice root concentrate and ginger rhizome, according to what I found on the website.
Calcium products, including Tums, etc. do reduce acid temporarily. I personally react badly to licorice because it contains sulfite (and I can't stand the flavor), but a lot of other people have found relief, according to their posts, from several of these ingredients.

I also read the "Other Ingredients": Xylitol, caseinate powder - milk derived (calcium, sodium, lecithin), fructose, stearic acid (vegetable), magnesium stearate (vegetable), and natural flavors.
Xylitol is one of the sugar alcohols. It's used as a sweetener. Sorbitol, another sugar alcohol, gives me gas bloating and diarrhea. Xylitol is supposed to be less of a problem. I have a problem with milk too.

Thank you for the input Alcie, by reading the label I guess I won't be taking that stuff since I have intolerance with dairy product..

So its day 3 without Prevacid... I was feeling okay yesterday night... but today my heartburn never stops, its almost a 24/7 thing, I tried tums and maalox both doesn't work for me, this has never happen to me before in my life. Before the treatment of Prevacid, I could eat anything with no problem at all, no acid reflux, no burning stomach. I don't know how this nonstop heartburn is going to hurt my system and what should I do to stop it... My family doctor is finally back from holiday so I will go check up with him tomorrow and see what to do.... in so much pain right now...

on their own- many of those ingredients are quite good at reducing stomach issues. In particular ginger root tea, up to 2g per day I find quite good at calming the stomach. Good formulation is made by Traditional Medicinals available at any health food store. MM

You can get Reglan, which works for a short time and shouldn't bother your Prevacid withdrawal.

If you go a week and still have problems you may need to see your doc and find out if your LES is closing. If it isn't you may have to stay on PPIs for life. I was on them for 25 years or so, from back when they were first invented. I never had a problem caused by my Nexium.

Careful, Reglan can cause bad side effects. I took it for eight months and developed uncontrollable shaking. It took a while for the shaking to stop after I quit the medication. Some people have even worse problems with it.

My friend began to take Nexium 7 months ago and has not suffered from any side effects till now. The heartburn began to ease after the first two days itself and he began to indulge himself in eating pizzas and nachos without any worry about a having severe heartburn! After a few days of successful effect, he placed an order for Nexium from an online pharmacy.

I don't know what happened. I didn't write anything about Reglan! I had bad side effects from it myself! Could someone else's post have gotten into mine?

Maybe I wrote Reglan when I meant to say Zantac. Must be losing my mind.
Zantac works pretty well in the short term.

Update here guys... I finally know whats going on with my stomach.... I have a very very rare bacteria infectioin.. the infection mostly occur in fish, if human are infected they cause all sorts of problems in your gut, its call Aeromonas Hydrophila. It all makes sense now since this all started after I ate some sushi....

I guess I shouldn't be on the PPI in the first place, the rebound is getting under control, just some occasional heartburn few times a day, hopefully my system will adjust itself. Kinda angry though, my doctor shouldn't prescribe such strong medication without doing any thorough diagnosis, I've been reading alot about PPI since this problem started, and seems like doctors nowadays are giving them out like candies.

I know this thread is rather old but I have had pretty much the EXACT same symptoms as yourself. How did they finally diagnose Aeromonas hydrophila? Did it show up on a blood test? Help from anyone who knows any details would be appreciated, it doesn't seem there is much online.

I haven't eaten sushi but I have worked closely with tropical fish in the past and am wondering if I picked it up that way.

I got a call from my doctor yesterday and they said that they found Aeromonas in my stool sample. My diagnosis is ulceroid colitis, but found some online resources that say that Aeromonas could even be a cause that causes symptoms that are very similar to ulceroid colitis.
