I went for my barium swallow today and ultra sound of the abdomen.  Felt happy to have test out of the way.  While out shopping the cell phone rings, and it's the GI docs office.  They called 4 mins. before closing, to tell me my uterus is abnormal, and I need to make appt. OBGYN!  Well what's wrong with my uterus?  "we cant tell you that need mske appt. with doc."  Well what does the report say?  Well I can't understand it?  Well is cance?  No.  Well can you read it to me? No.  I have an appt.  With GI Doc.  on Thursday, did they call just to scare  me??  What a way to run a doctors office.  Am I suppose to worry and wonder until Thursday?  What do I tell OBGYN " I have an abnormal uterus?"  GOD!!!

Oh wow! That would freak me out! I hate when they won't tell you anything. I had my first abnormal pap and they wouldn't tell me anything until I made an appt. Good luck!!

I had the same thing happen with me. It turned out I've got fibroids, but they aren't any problem, so it's wait and see.
You can get a copy of the report from the doctor before talking to him. I did it. It calmed my nerves greatly.

Well, legally, techs can't tell you test results. They can loose their license. But they shouldn't even hint at the trouble. That just worries us.

It wasn't a tech.  It was staff member from GI docs office who called to tell me, to let me know I have an abnormality with no details.  Why not wait until my appt. on Thursday?

That could of waited. I think it's a big no-no for staff to repeat a diagnosis unless it was the nurse.
Kitt, is that right? My sister works in medical records for a big hospital and they have very strict rules about everybody but the doctor telling the diagnosis.

Same thing happened to my wife. Turned out to just be fibroids. I also got that kind of phone call. They told me I had a growth on my right lower lobe of my lung and to make an appointment with my PCP. Within a couple minutes my PCP calls and says I already have an appointment with a thoracic surgeon in 2 days. Horrible 2 days for sure. I really think some people like to scare people. don;t understand why, but the seem to like it.

I was on the phone first thing this am, and it was a nurse that called me, we went round and round on the phone.  Appt. moved up to today at 1:50PM.  I'm going to let md of scare tactics.  If it's nothing to worry about they shouldn't have called, it could have waited until md appt on thursday.  Following through requires commonsense on their part.

I am sorry you are upset and I do understand that fear of the unknown.



If you had a life threatening situation you would have been called back to the hospital/clinic right away. Many tests show abnormalities so please take a deep breath and know you will be ok. Whenever I receive a call like you have I try to remember the majority of the problems are not life threatening.



RE telling you over the phone or in person, it is always the physician and/or his designee (Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practioner) that will interpretate tests. You may always ask to have the Physician call you so you can ask he/she what the test indicated.



The clinic nurse was allowed to tell you the test was abnormal however she is not trained in interpreting the tests or discussing the plan of care as the physician would be.



Receiving the phone call is very common practice to the best of my knowledge.

So I went to md appt today toget results:  Barium swallow normal  (endo showed severe esophagitis, ct scan of abd. showed sliding hiatal hernia and a 4.8x3.4 cystic mass of the right iliac Fossa) Yesterdays ulatra sound showed NO cystic mass, but a 3mm space-occupying leision arising from the endometrium)  radiologist opinion complex cyst on uterus.   I don't know what o beleive.   So confusing.Talk to doc about yesterdays phone call and he said "do you want a receptionist with no high school training to explain your results? we get yelled at if we don't call".   Why does he have someone with no education working in his office?  I have appt. with obgyn doc on Saturday.  Thanks all for listening.

That was an unecessary comment for the physician to make as he could have explained it very simply by telling you that the staff only makes the calls and are not licensed to interpret test results.



Perhaps you need a second opinion? Please do be your own best advocate and if you feel you are not getting clear information seek out another physician or take someone with you to your appointments that may be able to help you with your questions.

I second Kitt's motion. I have had doctors who would not listen to me, and were fairly non-communicative. My first GI doc pretty much discounted my concerns and thoughts. I need a doctor who will listen to me and give me credit for what I'm feeling. I also need a doctor who gives me credit for knowing something about my condition.

I went to my family doctor and discussed my difficulties with my GI doc and my frustration with his attitude. As a result, my family doc helped me choose another GI doc who better fit my needs. I've been extremely happy with him.

I would urge you to research another doctor if your insurance allows. It can make all the difference in the world.
You don't deserve to be pushed aside. Your questions should be answered thoroughly and you can ask questions until you feel satisfied.

Yeah-I got a call like that when I got diagnosed with Barretts. I couldn't wait--Figuring the nurses or receptionists couldn't help, I called the doctor on call. He understood my anxiety of waiting two weeks, and shared basic info that I was looking for. MM
