Lump in Throat Feeling

Hi All ,

  For the past 2 months I am having the feeling of a lump in throat. There is no difficulty in swallowing , no voice change, and no blood in suptum. The felling some times changes from 'Lump' to severe throat conjestation as if my throat is closed for ever. I have laryngoscopy and hypopharyingoscopy done and ther are no tumors seen , but the doctor said that I have small ulser on the vocal chord and there is nothing much alarming . Since I have burping and blenching fequently I have consulted the Gastrologist and has done the endoscopy, the report says that the stomach and esophagus is normal but have HPylori infection on the Dueodenum. A month before I have been diagonized for pleomorphic adenoma on the parotid gland and I am planning for the Surgery next month.

I have been smoking for past 8-9 years ( around 5 Cigarattes per day) , I do not have any heriditary traits for Cancer.

These are the concers/worries that I have;

1. Is the discomfort in the throat due to acid reflex (GRED) ? Or can there be any growth that the scopes could not see?

2. Does the H-Pylori infection contribute to the Burping , blenching and finally to the discomfort on the throat?

2. Will pleomorphic ademoma ( its small , 1.5 Cm diameter) exert preassure on the throat and is it because of this I feel the discomfort in throat?

3. Is Pleomorphic adenoma malignant or is there any risk if I have the suregery after a month?

Please shed some light on my worries and also suggest me the diagnostic and treatment approaches.

I am sorry to hear you are having so many issues at one time and I wish I could give you answers to all your questions. Some of these questions would best be addressed with a physician.

From what I have learned most cases of H. pylori infection produce no signs or symptoms. Signs or symptoms that can occur with H. pylori infection include:
An ache or burning pain in your abdomen
Nausea
Vomiting
Frequesnt burping
Bloating
Weight Loss
I am sure you will be hearing from other members with words of wisdom re some of your questions.

Let me just say, I have had the lump in the throat for almost a year now, and I totally understand the fears you have. At my lowest ebb I have considered writing letters to my children, thinking I would be dead soon. I really did feel like I was slowly dying at one point. I now realise it was caused by the GERD. I just had no idea it could feel so bad. My speech therapist explained that when the vocal chords are irritated, they become inflamed an can swell, which can cause a lump and difficultly swallowing, and a feeling of fullness and constriction in the throat. I have all of those things, so I felt some reassurance.

I hope this information explains a little.

I am so glad that I read your post. I have a real hard describing the throat sensations that I have. I was diagnosed in 2004 after the table tilt barium testing. Back then I wasnt put on any PPI's for it. I would just take the occasional Tums if I had a flare up. My main symptom with this particular flare up is this whole throat sensation.. at times it feel like I should cough something out, other times it feels like a tightening or pressure around my throat area, sometimes I would describe it as feeling like food was stuck or a lump was there. Sometimes it feels like someone's thumb is pressing on my throat. It really is worse when I lay on my stomach too.

It is so darn scary for me. I too, think that I a GERD before AND that the fact it improved with Prilosec a few months back should be a good sign..... right??? ... But my fear gets the best of me. I get afraid to sleep, afraid to eat or drink. It's terrible. I am frightened of the dreaded scope ... so I am willing to do whatever tests necessary except for those that involve sticking stuff down my throat.

I guess I am looking for some reassurance that it SEEMS like GERD and not throat cancer etc... Please tell me if these throat sensations are part of GERD. Thanks!!
