Test Results...who owns them?

I just had a barium swallow, and armed with information from this forum, asked for a copy of the report. I was told I could have the CD, but would need my GI doc's permission if they were to release the report. So I called my GI doc and they told me I needed to sign a formal request for the report, and only then would they mail me a copy. I argued with both the imaging center and the doctor's office but they were not budging. What's up with that? I'm interested if others have experienced the same roadblocks to receiving results of tests that they paid for! Hmmmmmmmmmm. Frustrated by bureaucracy--lots of it!

I have had no trouble getting my reports and CDs from all the hospitals where I have had tests done. The only reason for a release is, as Bill said, to allow others to get it.

Hop through the hoops for now and go to a different center next time you need a test.

The form you are probably being asked to complete is the Authorization/Consent for Release of Medical Information Form. Depending on the facility some want this form signed for all release of medical records and others for release of info to another facility.

You have the right to the information whether it be on CD or hard copy so please just continue your quest for the information. I have picked up copies of my own records from both the hospital and clinic without problems.

There may be a fee for copying/CD or hardcopy but it is worth it to have your info available to you.

The HIPAA laws prevail now (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) I think that is what it stands for. You can have any/all records. I remember a time when a patient wasn't allowed to even look at a record or chart. You also can get clinical notes, not just test results...surgical notes, too. If tests were done in a hospital you can go into Medical Records and sign a form and show your ID and they will get you whatever you want. It is helpful to give them a few days to gather it together. I have had records mailed and on other occasions I have picked them up.

I am fortunate to have several of my specialists although spread over several cities, belong to the same Medical group. I was recently at my pulmonologist's office and they printed off both GI reports and Cardiology reports for me! HIPAA info is all over the internet...just do a search and you can learn of your rights.

Speaking of surgical notes.... I had to get them for my redo surgeon to see what was done the first time. After my 2 week check...okay actually 5 week due to 3 week hospital stay....he gave me the surgical notes from the redo to take with me so I would have them if it ever was questioned down here. I thought that was pretty nice of him to give it to me without asking.
Denise- I just think the doctors are being a pain just because they want to!
