Hi, does anyone know if there is anything you can do to help acid reflux after having a Nissen fundoplication?  I had the Nissen, and it helped somewhat, but I now have burning higher up in my esophagus right below the larynx (not the severe heartburn that I had prior to the surgery) that is still quite painful. And it is 24/7. My GI said I have grade 1 erosive esophagitis at the GE junction, and I had a biopsy for Barrett's that I will get the results back today. PPI's never ever worked for me at all - none.  I'm just wondering if I have any hope or not.  I keep thinking that eventually I will have to get my esophagus removed...........

Your Nissen might have slipped.
How long ago did you have it done?
Did you get a dilation done?

If your fundo was recent it could be that you just haven't had time for your esophagus to recover. PPIs might work now even if they didn't help before the op. You normally do stay on them at least a couple of weeks afterward.

Did you have a full wrap?

Everything I've heard about the ring is the kinks are not worked out yet. There is some problems that are arising.

Welcome to Healing Well. I had my first nissen in '06 and a redo in '09 due to the first being done wrong. Did you have yours done at a teaching hospital? If not you might want to explore that route and see if they have an answer for you. Even if you did I would still go back and see the surgeon.

I had my fundo 5/13 and the doc told me up front that it doesn't work completely for everyone and that it may need to be redone down the line as they do loosen over time. He also told me that I may still need to be on ppi's as the surgery is to prevent the acid from entering the esophagus, but my stomach may still be producing too much acid and it needs to be suppressed. I am still taking protonix and will have a repeat endo in a few months to see how my stomach and esophagus looks and see if I still need the ppi.

I am doing much better than before. Mine wouldn't let food or liquids pass at times. Took almost 3 years to figure out why. I would see if you can get an appointment at the university and see what they have to say.
