Hi, I'm new to the forum.

I've had Acid Reflux disease as long as I can remember... and I am only 25!

I also have a rather fast heart rate, some palpatations, lower digestive upsets, and have had issues with hypoglycemia in the past. I'm wondering if other GERD sufferers have had some of these symtoms?

Anyways, over the last few days or so, my reflux has gotten worse with lots of indigestion after eating- belching, burping, and acid rising in the back of my throat. These symtoms overall are not new to me but I have been having them while standing up instead of laying down.

I also have been feeling like there's a lump in my throat while eating- especially things like bread.

I recently lost my insurance making visits to the speicalist a luxury that I cannot begin to afford as a full time graduate student. I just want to make sure that these are common symptoms that are experienced by others with GERD and are not signs of a more severe condition. Any input is appreciated. :-)

Hi welcome. I have not suffered the lump in the throat feeling you describe but I can definately identify with the burping and indigestion you are experiencing. There are other people on this forum though who have written about the lump in the throat feeling so i'm sure some of them will sympathise with you. I'm also not sure about the hypoglycemia and fast heart rate but someone will. What does your doctor say about these things?

My doctor has never said there is any connection between them but it's hard to believe that I could have that many random issues and that none of them are connected. At least that's my take on it. =)

sure, had all of the above and avoid bread for that exact reason.
if you are a full time grad student, go to the university medical clinic which your fees cover, mine did anyway.
i have found most things GERD related are pricey (tests, meds) and I would not want to be
without insurance
this is a great forum and you will get some outstanding feedback, but it can't replace a doc

The palputations could be the vegus nerve being irritated?
The hypoglicemia is unrelated.
Does your college have a campus clinic? You can get somethings at a reduced price there.

Some of your symptoms may not be GERD related.

The fast heart rate and palpitations could be stress related. Do you have a lot of stress at school or worry about your health frequently? Another possibility for the fast heart rate could be lack of exercise.

Digestion problems could also be stress related.

Are you taking any medication for your GERD? You could be having some side effects from a medication.

I don't think GERD can cause hypoglycemia. Have you tried eating six small meals a day instead of three big meals? That might help with both conditions.

Okay, quick update.
I went to the doc on my school's campus. He went over my symptoms and didn't feel that there was anything especially alarming but he ordered blood work anyways. He looked at my red and white blood counts and said they were both in the normal range which is a good indicator nothing as serious as cancer is going on. He was able to give me a referral to the closest county hosiptal to see a specialist and to get an endoscopy at a reduced fee or possibly even free. SO yeah, all good stuff.

Speden, you make a good point about the role stress plays in all the little issues I have. I know for a fact that my GERD has gotten considerably worse in the last few days BECAUSE I'm worried about it. It's like I'm noticing symptoms I never paid attention to before or maybe never even had before but have been created due to how my body reacts to stress. I am a long time anxiety sufferer and, although I have leanred to control my anxiety 90% of the time, I still go through phases of extreme anxiety.

Do your palpitations and rapid heart rate continue all the time, or are they ust after eating?

If it's all the time you need to see a cardiologist. If it's usually within a half hour to 2 hours after eating you could have a food trigger.

I had food triggers. My allergist had me keep a food journal to find out what they were.

Yes, I went to a cardiologist a few years ago back when the palpitations were much more frequent. He put me on a medication called Atenolol which helped to slow my heartrate when palpitations were happening. I stopped taking the meds after a few months and have not had severe palpitations since then. Only occasionally when I am really stressed out do they come back. Then there are those rare days where I get them for no reason- at least no reason I can think of. Maybe those are triggered by food... or I am stressed and just don't know it.

            Alisha ......  I'm 25 yrs myself and I've had the GERD  for about 3 1/2 Years . Alot of things can trigger it but I would suggest test to get to the bottom of it. You will find this forum very helpful as I did.  Holler for any question ??????????????  Welcome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
