Can anyone relate to this? My symptoms with Gerd is coughing!!! Ugh!! I am so sick of it. I had many tests ran on me and sure enough, that's what it is. I rarely have the burning sensation, but when I eat something I shouldn't (which is so hard not to no matter how well I follow the rules), I cough until I almost throw up. It's a dry intense cough. I have to sleep in my recliner chair because if I lay down I cough. I am on Prilosec and Pepcid twice a day. I have been on it almost 10 months. All the info about Gerd that I read is about the heartburn, but rarely speaks about coughing. I am so embarrassed by this. I am about 40lbs. over weight, so I am trying to lose also. If anyone has this symptom please let know so I won't feel so alone.

Hiya, I know I don't suffer with GERD as such, but with Cystic Fibrosis, we get a lot of similar problems with acid reflux. I'm just one of the lucky ones that can survive on Omeprazole and Maalox. But a lot of people I know, have had to have the fundoplication op.

I know that AR isn't as bad as GERD, but I just wanted to give some input into what I've been told.
It's something to do with when acid starts leaking up into your throat, it can start going back down into your lungs, which obviously irritates them. This can cause coughing, wheeziness and chest pain. I know with my AR, when it does kick off I end up coughing really hard, usually ending in throwing up everywhere. It's not nice, and I feel bad for you if this is happening all the time.

I know I'm not an expert in GERD, and don't know all that much about it, but hope this helps in someway.

Hi Golden3! I have definitely experienced coughing after eating. I'm actually very worried about my upcoming 2/27 surgery, because I cough so much that I'm sure I'll be in pain from it. I'm also worried that my asthma coughing will undo my surgical correction. Sure hope not. I hope you find a solution to your coughing problem!

1 tsp baking soda mixed with 8oz luke warm water. Drink it, wretched tasting but it makes you burp up the reflux.

Pineapple helps naseau

Last night, I was at a family birthday supper in a restraunt. Ate some gumbo (omg someone did not tell me its spicy) and minutes later I was in the bathroom vomiting it up. I ate some pineapple when I got back, then just stuck to the biscuits and water.

I was recently told that my recent health-related issues were because of either allergies or because of Acid Reflux that I was not feeling. My symptoms were the following: A dry, nonproductive (no mucus) cough which has been happening for several months now, and some fluttering in my chest , some minor topical pains (most likely from all the coughing) and feelings almost like heart palpitations. Claritin did not help the cough, and so far Pepcid twice a day (prescription strength) has only helped a little.

I try to regulate the kinds of things I eat and when, and I would have stopped eating entirely for a time if it would not arouse complaint.

It's very rare that I get the burning sensation that is associated with heartburn and I'm still not 100% certain I have GERD, but people have told me that's most likely what I'm having.

So I can definitely relate to you when it comes to the coughing.

Coughing is one of the symptoms. Every now and then I wake up in the middle of the night coughing due to reflux.

I can def relate. Im 7 months pregnant and my GERD was ok before i got preg. Now its horrible. Im on zantac 2 times a day but i still will get the cough at night. It doesnt burn but its more of a dry cough and nothing helps. I have to sleep sitting up and it sucks! Your not alone. Any suggestions??

I was getting a dry cough at night, but this has subsided now that I'm on Protonix.
Hopefully you will find answers soon!

Hi - good to see all the info people have posted here. I have had a wheezing cough for a few weeks and am being treated for bronchitis (steroids, antibioitcs, inhalers). It's more of an asthma feeling cough - I used to have asthma many years ago (allergy to my cat). I am on Protonix and it's worked very well for me and they doubled the dose just in case. But at night I wake up after a few hours sleep with the feeling of indigestion, not burning but feeling it in my esophgus and sometimes I even have this horrible clenching pain which at first I thought was my heart. Anyway, I'm going to see my gastroenterologist about this to see if it's related to the cough instead of a virus. Other than Protnoix twice a day and Pepcid Complete when I need it, does anyone else have any other suggestions other then meds?

I was constantly coughing and having lung issues because acid was coming into my lungs. I had to have the surgery to heal my lungs.

Have you raised your bed 6-8 inches with risers? If your GI can't find out anything you might want to get checked out for sleep apnea.

Don't eat or drink three hours before bedtime.

I, too, have had coughing as a result of GERD nighttime reflux, but raising the bed up (10 inches in my case) has helped that quite a bit.

However, I would like to point out for anyone that has a dry, hacking cough like the OP (even thought that post is pretty old) that there is a blood pressure drug that can cause that. I had a horrible bout for a couple of months with a dry, hacking cough that would wake me up in the middle of the night several times, and happened a lot during the day. I couldn't figure it out till I discovered that it was my blood pressure medication - lisinopril. It's an ACE Inhibitor. As soon as I quit it, the coughing stopped. So that's always something to check - the meds you're already taking.
