I promised that I would post on here to try and help others.

Surgery:

Had the esophyx in the bay Area with Dr Tsai and Dr Wong on July 28th 2010. When I got out I had a lot of pain in my heart area whiched turned out to be trapped air/gas from when they blow your stomach up during procedure. Also my throat was so sore I could hardly talk, this was caused by the intubation or breathing device they put down your throat for the procedure. Other than that I was fine, just felt very full of air and gas and they told me no burping but I let out some air without actually belching a few times. I went home the same night.

Day 1

Sore throat much better and stomach more calm than before so was not too bad, took some vicodin liquid for pain in throat. Main issue is constant feeling of needing to burp but have to swallow the burps becasue it can damage sutres to burp.

day 2-5

Throat better so now just dealing with burpiness and diet issues. Diet makes you pretty weak as no solids only clear liquid for 3 days. Other than that not too bad.

Not sure if surgery actually worked yet but I am staying positive that if I follow instructiuons very closely it will be a success. I have still been taking my 40mg prilosec by opening the capsule and dumping little pellits into my water. I think I will have to wait until at least 6-8 weeks out to know if this actually worked.

Try some gas-x strips for the gas. You're probably ready for full liquids by now if you can tolerate them. Muscle milk, boost, and ensure are great for protein and energy.

I started liquid diet yesterday and am a little lactose intolerarnt I think the yogurt and cottage cheese are giving me sharp gas pains in my side now. Gas x is not really working have been taking 6-8 strips a day. Have a really sharp pain in my side since this morning I think/hope it's gas trapped in me.

Joy when did you have yours and how r u feeling now?

I had sharp pain around my top incision after my gallbladder surgery. The doctor said it could have been air but wasn't sure. I panicked my way through the first week thinking that something was really wrong. Pleased to say that the pain just gradually got less and less and now (5 weeks out of surgery) it's completely gone.

I had mine in Dec. 2009.
I'm doing great. No pains, no problems.

14 days out now after Esophyx suregery and feeling fine. Not much to complain about at this point felling a little burpy and have strange acidy or maybe bile taste in mouth.

Tomorrow I can start eating regualr foods like eggs, potatos, fish, cooked veg, rice, etc and I'm excited.

I almost feel the same now as I felt B4 surgery but still dont know if procedure solved the problem. its only been 14 days though so way too early to tell as I am still healing. I am confident that I wont be regurgitating liquid or food when I bend over anymore but will have to wait and see. As far as being off PPI's I am going to wait until I am fully healed to give it a try. B4 surgery I would get reflux while on daily PPI's and a lot of regurgitation/ burping up sort of like a baby. If I had to keep taking PPI's but was rid of those issues that would be fine with me as well. I will think positive and hope for the best and report my results here after I test strenth of new valve.

Eggs and potatoes might give you trouble. They can swell some and stick.
At two weeks I was on soupy liquids. I didn't eat the food you mentioned until week 6.
Good luck. If it sticks do liquids a little longer.

I also had the TIF with Dr. Wong on May 10 2010 .  Yesterday, he did another  Endo (stitches all intact) with 48 Bravo.  When I get the results I will see if it worked.  I am still nauseous buh other than that I don't have manys ymtoms. Oh I had tons of heartburn during the whole 13 week period.  It was a tough recovery so be patient .

He found bile in my stomach which he believes is the result of my gallbladder being removed on Jan 2009.  I was hoping for a clean bill of health and I am very frustrated.

Does anyone know or have experienced this??

I had the EsophyX procedure done 17 days ago. I am now allowed canned fruits and melon. I have been getting mild heartburn and gas that I'm pretty sure is from the fruit. I had not had any heartburn since surgery until I started on the fruits. Anybody else experience this?

Fruits are very acidic.
Have you tried papya or pineapple? They are very soothing.

I had gotten heartburn for the post 13 week period no matter what I ate.

Gerd11 I am at 21 days post esophyx with Wong/Tsai and started eating regular food last week, I just started getting reflux in my sleep and during the day too and its giving me anxiety because I didnt think I was going to have much more reflux after surgery. You said you had it the whole 13 week period, did it stop after the 13th week?  I am very interested to see what your PH study shows, let me know when you get the results.

I had a little nausea but now its gone, I think I get it when my stomach is freaked out(called dyspepsia when stomach is shrunk and tempermental) so I have been meditating to relax and it helps.

Hi , I had the same surgeon also.(May 10)  I think we also communicated before ur surgery.  Dr. Wong is suprised I am still having symptoms.  I am his only patient to have had symtoms after surgery.  I am not proud of that just stating it.  I have all the same symptoms EXCEPT when I lie down it doesn't just flow into my throat as it used 2.

 

I was told by Wong that I shoudn't have ANY symptoms of GERD post surgery.

I went in monday for my repeat endo Bravo 48 test and he thinks I NOW have Bile reflux. I think he should"ve figured that out BEFORE Tif. So I wonder how he is going to know if it worked .  He does seem concerned that it didn't work; I think bec/ of his record.

 

Post-surgery up to wk 13; heatburn and GERD after most meals( after following the diet very closely)

 

Today heartburn after thinks u shouldn.t eat w GERD.  Dr. stays I should be able to eat EVERYTHING.

hi    I had the TIF surgery on april 9, 2010.    After about 5 days I had the nasal drip feeling, and burning tongue.

I had a Barium swallow on june 10, and a scope on june 14.   The dr said it was strange that when he would move the scope air would come out of my stomach.  Hmmm sounds strange to me.

I am still getting reflux.   Clearing my throat and sore throat sometimes.    My tongue and nose have a burning sensation.

I went to pittsburgh on july 22,  I had Manometry, 24 hour ph test, and a scope.   

The only thing the dr said to me was everything looked ok and my valve was open.   

I have an appt. sept 14, and will find out then what he thinks I should do.

He did say that he wasnt doing the TIF surgery anymore, because of problems with them.

Good luck with your TIF surgery I hope all turns out good.

I am only at week 3 and feel fine other than the reflux and a little burpy still but that seems to be going away. I am going to try and relax about this and hope that the reflux goes away over the next few weeks. I will keep you posted.

Did your bravo test show more or less reflux than you had b4 surgery?

I am now having reflux constantly and a very powerful taste of eggs in my mouth all day and night.  i am also having diarrea and constipation off and on and my stool is very green. I think I am producing too much bile and that is what is refluxing up a little, I say this becasue of the egg flavor(never had in 11 yrs with severe GERD) and becasue of the color of my stool(alslo very weird as I am eating nothing green). I do have mild IBS and I think my whole system is a little freaked out after surgery.  I am having some pain/discomfort on lower right side under bottom of ribs, I guess I should look and see where gall baldder is located.Has anyone else experienced any of this?

I had constant diaherra  for a solid two weeks.  It was many different colors.  I also have IBS.  I was very weak and it wasn't fun.  I was very weak.  I was getting very dehydrated.  The minute I drank something it came out the other end.  I was constantly sipping.  Make sure you drink as much as you can.

Sounds like gallbladder to me I had mine out Jan 2009.  Since then its been all downhill.  I don't recommend taking it out.

My opinion is if u still have reflux like me its bile. 

I hope u feel better soon it takes time to heal.

I got the results of my PH BRAVO and my reflex is significantly increased since before the TIF.  My number went from 20 to 44.  Very puzzling and troubling for me.  The Dr. said the TIF was intact and I am the only one still having symptoms ; heartburn, hoarseness, burning and nauseous.  I don't feel any betters at all!  What a waste.

Do you feel better at all?  How are you healing?  How are your symptoms? If it worked I believe you shouldn't have any. Most patients find that they don't have anymore symptoms after the TIF.

He wants to repeat some tests that were normal in the past; Gastric Emptying test and UGI(Uppere Gastrointestinal Barium) study.  I have an important question for you; having gone through the same as I would you go ahead and do the Nissen Fundo?  I don't know if I can live the rest of my life like this.

gerd 11- my reflux pretty much stopped after about a week. I just hit week #7 and started trying to eat a bunch of different stuff (sandwiches, chicken, chips guacamole) and had a few beers. I was OK the 1st couple of nights but lastnight just had reflux in sleep again- weird. I only get it in my sleep but not while sitting up so far.  That is not good news about your PH test, I think you and I are having very similar problems from the sound of it. I used to regurgitate a lot (4-5x per week) but now am not so I feel like surgery helped in that aspect but the fact I am still having reflux is very troubling to me. If our valves are so tight then how we  refluxing? It does not make sense. I am at 49 days now and just hope that in another month my stomach will relax a bit more and then I can really judge the results. Right now I have mixed emotions sometimes I fell that it worked and other times I dont.

As far as the nissen, I cant do it! Many patients have difficulty swollowing for years after that procedure and I already have difficulty swallowing things like steak, or any other chewy stuff because of all the yrs of reflux burned my esophyx and made it harder for me to swallow. If I stay the way I feel now I will have to do something though otherwise go crazy, I heard there are a few Drs on east coast that can fix the esophyx. I was watching 20/20 last week and scientists have creasted a new way to fix the issues we have using stem cells and pig cells. Its pretty crazy but within 5 yrs they said it will be available , no surgery. I'll keep you posted over the next few weeks.

I also have trouble swallowing - post-polio. My wrap was a Toupet - like a Nissen, but not 360 degrees. It was done that way based on my manometry results.

I also had mine done in Pittsburgh. I occasionally don't swallow chalky pills all the way down and have to eat a little something or keep drinking something slippery like milk, but it's so much better than before!

Sorry to hear you are still having issues. There is no logical issue why the surgery shouldn't work. My Dr. doesn't even know why an intact surgery wouldn't work. I am sorry to hear you are still having issues; you shouldn't again logically. please take care and keep me posted.

I just wanted to ask you one more thing, are you still having acid reflux a lot now or did it taper off a bit after the 12 week period? I ask becasue it seems like everytime I change my diet plan, like when I went from liquids to soft foods and now from soft foods to regular foods I seem to have the most reflux maybe its just the stomach freaking out and producing too much acid. I hope it calms down a lot as I feel worse now than b4 surgery.

By the way my Demeester score prior to surgery was a 62! So I would not think it can get much worse than that. I hope you're reflux is under control.
