Now I have Bile Reflux? Scared & still sick

Hello Everyone,

I am posting to update my condition.  Brief summary of my conditions;I  had my Gallbladder out in Jan 2009 since then I have had constant nausea, burning in stomach and all the symptms with GERD and Gastrisitis.  Feeling really bad on May 10, 2010 I had the TIF procedure. After,  I had dumping for two weeks and  itwas a tough recovery for my body. 

Following my TIF 13 weeks plus out;

My doctor was concerned bec/ he has a 100% success rate and I was reporting the same symptoms.   So he did his third Endo. on me with the Bravo 48 PH test.

He immediately found yellow bile in my stomach and espohagus which isn't supose to be there.  He believes it is a direct result from my Gallbladder procedure and I need to go back to that Dr. bec/ he can't help me anymore.  The ONLY way he said I can recover from  roueny surgery. (same as gastric bypass surgery)

 At this point I am frustrated and still sick and now I am looking at another serious operation??  Don't you think he should have found this out at my last endo.??  Has anyone every experienced this and how did you get better?  I am really scared and still sick.  Thanks

So sorry you're going through this.
I think the fault lies in your gallbladder surgeon messing up the procedure. Then it lies on your GI for not seeing the bile.

Joy thanks for the support.  What do you mean messing up the procedure?  Do you know what could go wrong?  Do you have any idea of where I should go from here?

If you are having bile coming in wrong doesn't that mean something was done wrong?
I researched the surgery and found this statement:

Unintended injury to adjacent structures such as the common bile duct or small bowel may occur and may require another surgical procedure to repair it.

I guess you need the surgery. :(

It is very possible something went wrong and you have just now found out what. My first Nissen was done wrong and it took almost 3 years for them to figure it out. Also I too have tremendous amounts of bile. To the point I had nothing except bile coming out when I was stuck on TPN at the hospital for 3 weeks and couldn't eat anything. The GI doctor there thought I had C-DIFF because he said nobody can produce that much bile. I argued with him and he tested it and sure enough nothing but bile for bowel movements. So I never rule anything out until they prove it.
Try to relax. Stress will make things much worse.

Bill thanks for responding.  What did they do to stop the bile?   Am I correct there was bile in your stools?

Yes it was bile in my stools, well actually that's all my stools were. When I first had mine out I used Colestid and or Questran to control the excess bile. It was causing me to have bile induced diarrhea. It's been almost 6 years since I had mine removed and haven't had to use anything besides imodium once in a while for about a year. The first 2 tears were horrible, especially if I didn't eat at regular intervals. When they remove your gallbladder they reconnect the duct and since there is no bladder it constantly drips. I am not trying to say nothing is wrong, but there is a good possibility there isn't anything wrong.
When I have to fast for tests or surgery I have a bad couple days after wards because I didn't eat my normal meals and there wasn't anything to absorb the bile.
When they did the EGD I am assuming you had to fast for it and maybe that's why the bile was there. My GI doctor told me acid and bile refluxing basically feel the same, but taste different.

Bill,

I'm sorry but I have more ?'s.  Would it be normal for me 1 year past surgery to be nauseous most days?  Is there medicine or other alternatives other that surgery?  Did you have surgery?  Sorry for all the ?'a didn't think I'd be learning this much when I got my gallbladder out.  My dad and sister had theirs out and didn't have any problems.

I didn't have surgery the colestid and questran helped a lot. My surgeon told me that after the gallbladder is removed the duct is reconnected and will constantly drip into my stomach /small intestine. Colestid and questran are cholesterol meds and bind with the bile so it does cause so many problems. I'd ask to try Questran(powder) or Colestid(pill) and see what happens. It did take me a few days to figure out if it would work and to get the right dosage. For me the Questran worked better, but I got tired of mixing it and it can be gritty also. I switched to Colestid because it was easier to just take 1 or 2 pills.

GERD11 I've had my gallbladder out nearly 7 weeks ago. I can now eat most things now with no probs. It sounds like they have not reconnected your bile ducts properly. They should not empty into your stomach but into your intestines. I was warned this was a risk when I went in for my surgery. Honestly I would go for the surgery. You don't want to spend your life feeling sick. It is major surgery but actually so is gallbladder surgery it's only since they began doing them through keyhole that it seems simple.
