gerd symptoms

Hi im new to this forum would like to ask someone if my symptoms are classic for gerd.  I am awaiting my results from the barrium swallow I received last week.  The first symptom I got was waking up in the middle of the night choking on acid and not being able to breath my god I thought I was dying, anyway about two days later I found I could not eat solid food it would go into my stomach and then come back up my osoephagus and stick in my throat until it slowly went into my stomach,  my throat feels as though someone is strangling me.  Anyway that was six weeks ago and I still cant eat solid food, the first two or three mouthfulls go down but then come back up, I have a crushing feeling in my chest, pain in the upper part of my abdomen.  My doctor has put me on omezaprazole 20 mg which I have been taking in the mornings the last few days but when I go to bed or lie down the acid and any food start to come back up my food pipe. My doctor wants to wait until my results come through before prescribing anything else.  Can I ask if this sounds like gerd to anyone who has already been diagnosed.  I am middle aged and currently going through menopause - never had any digestive problems before.

Hi all no results yet at doctors just been informed have to chase up the hospital as it has been two weeks now. Just found out I have a buried wisdom tooth that will need extracting I wonder if this has any bearing on the symptoms I am having. OMG it never rains but it pours doesnt it! Everything seems to come together.

I think ill need good luck when it comes time to getting that tooth out im a big baby - I managed to eat a little mashed potato at tea time tonight - not counting my chickens though.

Tell the dentist you want IV sedation. It will make it easier. I slept through most of mine. I only woke up once when he was pulling my partially buried tooth. It was very stubborn.
Make sure you have mushy foods (mostly liquids) to eat. Chewing action hurt me the most. Don't use straws! Don't spit, brush, or rinse your mouth.

Thanks for all your input, I thought I was a little old at 50 to have wisdom teeth but they must have been buried deep within my jaw.  Lynn I am sorry your 11 year old has this teriible problem I hope he feels better after the surgery he is young and Im sure he will quickly get well.  I would opt for keyhole surgery (thats what we call it in UK) it appears to be less evasive than the other methods.  I have never had anything like this before in my entire life and my diet has not been too bad.  I just hope the medication Im taking starts to work soon and I can get back to work, although if they offer me surgery, I will probably opt for that method rather than taking medication.  Would it rectify your sons slow gastric emptying also, I read that there is medication that quickens up the emptying of the stomach but cant remember what it is called. Since I started with menopause, I hav'nt been well at all, its going on three years now and its been one thing after another, ill be glad when its all over and done with being a woman sucks at times.  Hope everything goes well for you and you son.  

I'd do the laproscopic. The outside heals fast and it doesn't hurt that bad really.
My PT's son had it done at age three and he's still doing fine at age 9.

I've never heard of a paralysed esophagus. Do they know how it happened?
This is something new to me.

pureed baby food
Chicken or beef broth
Thin soups
watery grits
Slimfast
Boost high protein
GNC high protein drink or whey

I had no pain, but my dentist said they had cavities developing. So out they came.
Afterwards for a couple of weeks I had to eat soft foods like the post surgery gerd diet.

I had no idea of the surgery options available to me until two years ago when I went to the GI doctor.
There's the full Nissen, the toupet(sp?), the TIF, the Hill, and the partial wrap.
I had the 270 degree wrap similar to the toupet (sp?).
It is something to considered, but don't go into it with blinders on. It's not a cure all. You are left with some quirks afterwards, but they are easy to adjust to.
