Hi Purplemonkey ..
PPI's didnt help me, made me worse. Tumms helped a bit, but then I read that the symptoms for low acid and high stomach acid more or less the same. Tumms will always help for a short while, whether low or hi acid. If you have problems with a weak "flap" your stomach will still release some acid whether you have hi or low acid. When my PPI made me worse I reckoned it was because I had low acid .. did research ... and decided to take enzymes which made all the difference .. chucked my PPi and tumms away!! Doing a lot of research realised I was doing all the wrong things .. eating too large meals ... eating or drinking within 2 hrs of retiring at night, and worse of all .. because I coughed a lot, sucked peppermints and menthol lozenges by the dozen each day ... then I learnt that this as well as chocolate relaxes the "flap" or "valve" at the top of the stomach ...and this turned into a viscious circle. The more I coughed, the more I sucked the stuff, and the more the flap opened and let more gunk into my throat!!
I never realised how many people actually needed operations to fix their problems and I'm going out of my way to learn more about the subject to avoid having an operation, so I'm open to everybody giving me tips to live with my low acid reflux (causing sticky phlegm in my throat which has since nearly disappeared) ...
so good luck to you, regards, Cecelia
I've had acid problems and PPI's made me worse as well. There doesn't seem to be many people on this board who have experienced that. Sometimes I have no acid reflux ans just bloating/belching feeling. Feel free to contact me if you ever want to talk. :)
I read on the Tumms website that it neutralises stomach acid. Will that still help if your stomach acid is low?
