Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the site.  Reading all the comments. Thank You all it really helps. My doctor suggests doing what is called a Streda which he uses something to go down the throat and shrinks the opening, so acid can't come back up. Which ther is no recovery time. Has anyone had the Streda? The problem is Ins does not pay for it.  He tells me my other option is the Nissen Fundoplication.  In reading all the messages i have to ask this question.  If I have this done within the next 2 or 3 weeks will I be somewhat able to go on a cruise in the beginning of April. 2011 to Mexico? Also did anyone go back to work right away? If so how long before you went back to work?

Hi Pearl! Welcome to Healing Well!!!!!

I'm on day 28 post Nissen surgery and I'm pretty sure I could handle a cruise. lol
I'm weak and I can't hold very much food but by April I bet that's going to be very different....I get better every day.
I don't work outside of my house but plenty of people on here were back at desk jobs their second week after the surgery.
You just have to take it easy.
The others will tell you how it was for them and give you advice on timing but if you get this done soon, based on what it's been like for me, I'd say you should be up to a cruise by April as long as you're planning to lounge around and take it easy!

Keep us updated and ask any questions you may have!
The people here are GREAT and they had me so well prepared that the whole thing was a breeze - as much as surgery can be.

That's great to hear that you are doing so well. This site is so intersesting and has been so helpful already for me.
I think that I will be fine , I have a desk job and just sit in front of a computer for 10 hours. That might be hard at first, but I think I can handle it.
I could stand to lose about 30 pounds, so maybe that will help in my making the choice to have this done.
I know that I would love to get off the meds and sleep at night. Along with the chest pains. Who would figure ( I will call it my flapper) not working at all would cause chest pains. But it does. Again thanks and have a nice and restful day!

Stretta has been mostly replace with other options. Do you have a hiatial hernia? This can affect the outcome of a stretta procedure.
I had the 270 degree wrap done and by the fourth month I could handle a cruise. I couldn't eat much but I was feeling good at that point.

Hi Pearl,
The Nissen Fundoplication surgery is the gold standard for stopping reflux. Everyone is different, but I can tell you that I went on vacation after four months, and enjoyed eating out a restaurants. I was back to normal as far as eating went...I could eat and enjoy anything I chose. You'll always have to chew more carefully, but if your recovery was anything like mine, you shouldn't have a problem on your cruise in April.
Good luck with your decision! If you decide on the surgery, be sure to take the time to research which surgeon you choose. You need to find an outstanding surgeon with lots of experience doing Nissens (at the very least, 300 procedure). Be sure to ask lots of questions. You'll need to have several tests--barium swallow, manometry, endoscopy, and 24 hr. PH monitor.
