It's very common. It comes from the acid touching your vocal cords.
It will go away once the acid is under control either by medicines or surgery.

Hello Joy thanks for replying, i've been experiencing this for over 3 months and on prilosec 40 mg daily but still i see no relief, now i have another symptom i didn't have before the prilosec which is the feeling of something stuck in my throat which i know it's common with LPR but it's frustrating cause i did not have this before the treatment, do you experience any hoarseness from reflux?

Yes, I did, but I had the NF and it's better now. The PPI didn't help me.

It's very annoying having to clear your throat all the time because of the gunk.

I have taken meds for LPR for 1/2 my life. I have finally been properly diagnosed after all these years. Turns out it's an anatomical issue that I have had since birth with my esophogus. Age is another factor as it has become weakend over time. Everything I have been told makes perfect sense. Meds only mask condition and once flap is damaged, it's not going to close on it's own. Surgery is the only way for it to be corrected. The type of surgery is another story. Which one is best etc etc???? Some people say go Reg Nissen. some say go laproscopic, some say EsophoX. In my case meds do no good at all. If anyone has any other ideas, I would be happy to listen. Other then, lifestyle changes, apple cider etc. These are only temporary quick fixes.

hey longislandchick thanks for taking the time to reply, is it ok if i send you a pm with my msn? i would like to talk a little about all this, regarding surgery i think im miles away from it now, i just had a barium swallow yesterdy which came back normal on tuesday i have to see my GI to see what we are going to do next :/ i really want to have the Intraluminal Multichannel Impedance test cause that's the only one who can really detect all kinds of reflux. I think my problem it's also a busted LES or UES or both. Did apple cider did anything for you longislandchick? i tried it a couple of times and it burnt my throat like a mutha***** so i stopped cause my larynx is already damaged and i don't wanna make it worse cry

what kinda reflux do you have/had/ was it acid or non-acid? and what part of your larynx got injured? for me it's the posterior part just above the vocal folds, my throat looks something like this http://www.entandallergy.com/vas/images/galleries/reflux/r_edema_5.jpg and that's what's making me hoarse, i asked an ENT and my GI if they have had patients with that same lesion and they said yes then i asked "did it go away"? they both said yes, maybe they were lying...

This is all great info that I will take with me to my next dr's appt.  All I know is from all of my testing , it's been diagnosed as LPR.  There is no damage, just current inflammation.  I am just taking Kapidex at the moment as that is only helping somewhat.  I have done the PPI thing etc.  Meds do not work at this point and quite franfly I don;t want to stay on them.  I am going to ask my doctor about that IMI test.  What kind of procedure is it as I have had too many to count.  I may have already had it done.  I am also going to check on this lesion issue.  Maybe I have it and don't even know it as well.  I have top notch doctors here on Long Island and New york City and I have excellent health coverage.  Now it's just finding the right type of surgery.  They all seem so keen on this EsophoX procedure.  I think it's because it's quite lucrative from a money stand point.  They all want to be the go to guy.  I am going to be meeting with my gastro guy to see what he suggests for this surgery.  I have been putting off for a year now because I know what is coming.  I am hoping that from hearing what other people have to say, I can make an intelligient choice with the procedure.  So what point are you at as far as teatment long term.  I have going to be 52 soon.

with that you are going to know for sure what kind of reflux you have, also im not sure if there's any test that can tell if your UES is working properly but im gonna do some research on that one...

I was all gun-ho for the TIF before I talked with my surgeon. He told me although he was the first one in the state to do the procedure he didn't think it was the best of surgeries.
First, you must have practially no HH. If you have a HH over a certain size your stomach will come up into your chest from the folding over of the esophagus. Next, if a nerve or blood vessel is punctured by a stay you could have trouble. Lastly, the stays can pop loose causing further surgery to replace it and remove the broken stay.
Also I've heard of others who have posted here that they had the TIF surgery and it failed.

My surgeon recommended a special procedure he designed and called a "modified Hill" , but it was more like a tourpet. I had a 270 wrap done.

Before consenting to surgery make sure that you have at least these tests done:
Barium Swallow, EGD, Manometry, Ph test or BRAVO, Stomach emptying

Thanks Joy.  This is so helpful to talk to someone who has gone through all of this.  I have had all of the tests that you have listed.   As far as I know I did not have any HH or if I recall it was very small.  I guess if I go for one more endoscopy or other before surgery, it should show signs of HH.  My doctor is very diversified in the kinds of surgery he does.  He did mention to me about the 270 as well.   How are you feeling after the surgery and are you on any meds?  I was just wondering if age can be a factor in the healing process as well.  A friend just had the Nissen done (not laproscopic) and he is doing great.  He is totally off his meds.  I just worry about recovery.  I am a union construction worker and sometimes, not always there is lifting involved.  Bending is required at times etc.  Just very concerned about how it may affect my livlihood. Some people say no problems.  I guess it depends on skill of surgeon as well. 

Where was your doctor located if I may ask?  Is the TIF the procedure used for the EsophoX surgery?  Or is that something different.  I am not to familair with everything out there.

I don't take any medicine for gerd anymore. I like the 270 because I'm able to burp and food doesn't get stuck like some I've heard do. You can lift about 50 plus after everything's healed up (about 3 or 4 months).
Bending over the first month and a half can be uncomfortable.
I had my surgery laproscopically. I'm 42 yrs old. I was pain free after a week and eating normally by 3 months. I was back at work after two weeks, but my job was not a strenious job (teaching).

My surgeon was in Albany, Ga. He's well versed in all of the procedures, too.

The TIF procedure is the Esophox procedure.

Went to my doctor today and boy did we have quite a discussion. Monday I am going for the Bravo. I asked him about the Intraluminal Mutichannel test. He thought that was an excellent test as well but I did not want to go through it right now. He had me stop taking the Dexilant as of today. Wants to be sure this is really acid reflux and not associated with a nasal allergy. He was concerned about my hoarseness, throat issues etc. The one thing he did say and please correct me if I am wrong. He said that sometimes patients who have LPR have problems with the Nissen because it can create swallowing issues. Example : Lump in throat etc. He also said that his patients with LPR did well with the EsophoX procedure. We talked for an hour about the stays etc. He said it depends on the expertise of the surgeon and went on to say he does this surgery with two other surgeons etc. As someone who has LPR you seem to have done okay with the 270. Describe all of your symptoms to me prior to surgery.

Before surgery:
Constant sinus and lung infections
Chronic coughing and choking on gunk in the throat
Asthma attacks
Almost blackouts from food getting stuck in my HH
Some heartburn
Hoarseness

After surgery:
heartburn only if I eat peanuts or peanut butter

I'd avoid the EsophoX at all cost. It's too risky.

Thanks for getting back to me with all of the info. I do not have any heartburn at all. Sometimes more of a nasal issue and hoarseness etc. I did have the lump in throat but that seemed to quiet down with Dexilant. Other then that I know when I drink wine or cocktails etc it acts up. I do agree about the EsophoX thing. I would hate to go through all of that only to have to have Nissen done any way. At this stage we are just ruling out any other issues and making 100% sure it is acid reflux.

Many years ago I did have the heartburn when first diagnosed. It went away over the years for some reason. When I read your list of symptoms, mine are small in comparison. I did tell him I do not want to be on any long term meds. Hopefully these two tests will give some kind of indication of where this is going. I have had enough of dealing with this for the last twenty years.

Also wondering if Menopause could cause some of this as well. When I told this to my OBY GYN she thought I has a screw loose. Said she has never heard of any correlation between the two. Just wondering?

I don't know I was diagnosed with gerd almost ten years ago. Food kept getting stuck in my chest, I'd have horrible pain, and feel like the world was going dark.
PPIs worked okay for me for a few years then suddenly stopped working.

Hey,

This is my first time here so here I go.  about 4 years ago I started hurting for no reason.  I had developed IC which is painful bladder syndrome.  Then I was diganosed with Fibro!  A short time later (I am a singer-songwriter), I got to where my voice was hoarse and it would cut out on me when ever I would sing.  I finally went to my ENT and they told me I had LPR.  It is so bad now it has affected my daytime job.  I can't even order food through a fast food place because they can't understand me when I talk it is so bad.  My acid reflux has been a challage for awhile, now it is completly out of control.  I have done everything they have asked of me.  In the mean time I got PF in both feet and even the steroid shots won't work.  I'm very frustrated and wanted to know if you have chronic inflammation would the NF still work?  I do not want to go the extreme of having the surgery if the inflammation will return and the surgery be of no use.

I don't have fibro, but I do suffer from PF, arthritis in the knee and back.
I'm an asthmatic and have multiple allergies. So I'm always inflammed some way. :(
So I don't think it will affect the NF. I hasn't affected mine.

PS. You do need to avoid the fast foods to help reduce the Gerd.

@couchlater, about the hoarseness, what part of your larynx did the reflux attacked? vocal folds or some other part of the larynx?

It was getting on everything in the windpipe and down into my lungs some.
