2 Days Post Nissen Surgery - Sharing my experience

Hello Everyone,

I had a full wrap done on Tuesday, December 21st and I am feeling a million times better than I thought I would. I had a small hiatal hernia, which they repaired as well. I did not need any narcotic pain medication while I was in the hospital and now only use the codeine at night to help while I sleep. The majority of my pain the first few days was due to the air in the chest cavity, which is almost gone now at the end of Day 3.

I am on a full liquid diet until Tuesday, when I will move to a pureed diet. I have been eating cream of wheat with brown sugar and tonight had some liquefied vegetable soup, which was very yummy! I am handling the diet very well. Burping is no problem and I have not had problems with a gassy stomach as of yet. I slept a lot today, but when I am awake, I feel very good all things considered.

If anyone needs surgeon in Indiana, let me know. I was VERY happy with my surgeon and the hospital I stayed at. I was able to order food anytime I wanted from a list of approved liquid items and the unit was really small - only 11 single rooms.

Nothing unexpected at this point - just working on healing.

I have some questions. I am in the what kind of surgery stage.  This web site has given me a lot of great information on what to consider.  I have been meeting with a number of different surgeons here in New York. If there is any one out there who lives in New York and has had surgery, please let me know how it turned out. My doctor does every surgery there is for acid reflux.  We are currently discussing this new EsophoX but I don't know too many people who have had it done.  Over all what seems to work as far as surgery as the last option?  Meds don't work at this point.

I'm also in long island and seeking out surgeons. I have barretts esophogus but my Acid reflux is horrible and I need to get it addressed. I have been given a name Dr. Bessler at Colombia Presbyterien. Let me know who you have met with or plan on meeting with. I realize we need to go to the best.

hey btowngal what were your symptoms before surgery?

Hello Everyone,

I am now 6 days post surgery.  I am still have some back pain when I breath in really deeply, though it has gotten better.  I am also experiencing some spasms in my esophagus after I yawn or sneeze - ouch!

Eating has been smooth so far.  Still on full liquids until Tuesday.  A lot of liquified veggie soup, cream of wheat, ice cream, and lots of liquids.  I have just finished my prescription of Toradol - but have not needed any of the narcotic pain meds at all.  Believe it or not, I have even been sleeping on my stomach at times without pain.  Just some soreness.

I am looking forward to moving to the pureed diet on Tuesday.  I'm pretty bored with my options at the moment.

I really cannot complain with where I am only 6 days out.  I lose my energy quickly and nap often, but when I am up, I generally feel good.

I'm new to the forum and am having the fundaplication on Tuesday here in NJ. i am very nervous but this forum has really helped. My hiatal hernia is 11 CM wide. I have constant pain in my chest. I thought I was having a heart attack until it was diagosed. I am overwieght and havent had the will power to stop eating. I am sure that this surgery and a liquid diet will help the situation.

Thanks Joy I'm a nervous wreck but looking forward to no pain and losing weight.

Welcome to Healing Well! I'm glad you've found the posts here helpful. I know this forum helped me tremendously both when I was making the decision to have the surgery and afterward, when the great advice and support of members here helped me through the recovery.

PS- I had the surgery (minus the gallbladder, but if they're in there, they might as well make it worthwhile!) at age 56, so I wasn't far behind you!)
