Tums or Gaviscon?

I just wondered if anyone out there has used either of these products when having a bad "acid attack" as I call them :P Either heartburn or burning in the stomach.

I just checked out Tums, and I noticed the first ingredient in it is sugar...as well as containing citric acid. That kind of concerned me, as I was thinking surely those 2 things make acid problems worse.

Then again, you can take Tums more often than Gaviscon, so I don't know if it maybe is better?

Any ideas?

Hey Judy,

Good Evening.  :-) My Doctor told me once that liquid antacids work faster then the tablets and you don't need to use as much as you would the tablets. 

I have tried Mylanta but I prefer Rolaids as they are easy to keep with you at all times.  I don't have enough room in my purse for the family size bottle of Mylanta smhair

I also keep Rolaids in my bed side stand so if I have issues in the middle of the night I don't have to go on a scavenger hunt.

I think it may depend on what works best for each person.  Good question.

Tums seems to do better for me than the Maalox. Maybe it just varies from person to person...

Maalox is best for me, but like Kitt, I've always traveled with Tums.

I used to use Rolaids but now it is longer available and switched to Tums fruit favor. I don't find it works as well. With the liquid anacids you can feel it coat your throut and gives faster relieve.

I agree...the coating of the esophagus and wrap (in my case) is very soothing. My vote is for liquid.

There is a new Tums out, called Tums Duel Action... Its an acid reducer and anti acid in one. I take one and it works during a bad attack. The downfall you can't have more than 4 a day. Good news, they are chewable and if you chew them to where you can get them disolve it will go straight in your bloodstream. It works really fast for me.

I also like Maalox. I can't take things like PeptoBisthmul. I am extremely limed to what I can take for anything cuz of being an asthmatic diabetic thats allergic to sacilylites. Yes guys, I just knocked out 98% of an entire pharmacy.

I have had very severe reflux for years, and the only thing I have found that works (for me) is liquid Gaviscon... This was recommended by a couple of my GI docs also. I still take liquid Gaviscon in addition to the two medications I am on. I also find that it helps with a sour stomach or neasua.... which is such a bonus... I am going to see if I can continue to take it after having my Nissen Fundoplication next week:)

If things go well you probably won't need to take the gaviscon except one and awhile. :-)

I really hope this surgery will help all that.. I really can not imagine life without being
nauseous all the time;) It would be soooo awesome:)

Thanks for your message. I am not too great right now, although been up and down I have my better days.

I ate oats for breakfast yesterday and reacted really badly to them, hello nausea, bloating and constant burping, eek! ;)

Hopefully I will get better again though.

And I've got a job interview on saturday, I hope I'm not feeling too yucky by then haha!

How are you doing?

I use liquid Gaviscon, love it! Works great for me! I carry around a huge bottle in my huge purse! My friends make fun of me, but when you need it you need it!

When I go back to working, I'm wondering whether to switch to tablets. Liquid seems better, it's just more awkward to have when at work I guess.
