Post Nissan Issues

Hi All,

 

I had my nissan fundoplication surgery Jan 6. So it has now been a little over three weeks. I was told by my surgeon that I would be able to eat rice, spaghetti, and soft foods for weeks 3 thru week 6. I am having a little trouble eating the spaghetti and rice being that it is a little over 3 weeks since my surgery. Should this be normal? It feels funny going down my throat. Also when I eat I am constantly getting hiccups after eating and air that goes up to my throat. Is that normal? I just want to make sure that I am recovering normally. My surgion did a barium swallow test on me two weeks after my surgery and it showed that my esophagus was swollen and that I now had a motility issue. I didn't have a motility issue before. The surgeon said the motility issue and esophagus being swollen will go away soon. Is that surgeon correct? Is this temporary? Thanks for any help that can be provided.

I agree with Joy. They swelling and motility issues will definitely subside as you heal. Your upper GI tract has been through a lot, and it will take time to get things going more smoothly.

I found spaghetti and noodles to be difficult to chew and swallow in the beginning. As Joy said, whatever you do, take small bites, and chew to a liquid. It will make a big difference in your eating. If something doesn't chew to a liquid, don't eat it yet. If you have a slow cooker, you can throw some potatoes, carrots, onions and meat of your choice in it and cook it for hours. It will become exceedingly tender and you'll be able to chew it to a liquid. A yummy treat!

You're still at the earliest stages of healing, so be patient, and try not to worry. As my surgeon said, pretty much anything is possible at this stage of healing. Things will improve over time.

Welcome to Healing Well! Anyone in the early stages of recovery is going to face some struggles. It take time for the healing to occur. Many people struggle with hiccups post-surgery, and yes they don't last forever. Some don't get them, while others are plagued by quite a few.

I think you're smart. From what I've heard, the hiccups get worse with eating certing things. You are the best judge of that.

Hang in there. I expect someone will be by who can talk to you about their own experiences with the dreaded hiccup!

You will get better...just try to be patient, and follow the path your recovery takes. If you can surrender to the process, it makes it a lot easier. The more you struggle against it, the harder it is.

You might want to start your own "hiccup" thread on the main board, so it's easier for other members to find you.
