nausea after Nissen

It's been 2 years since my Nissen and everything is great except nausea. I get random nausea. Sometimes it's so bad I'm completely miserable and feel like I NEED to puke. At my 1 year follow up appointment. My surgeon understood that nausea happens after having this surgery and prescribed me with more anti nausea meds. Well it's a year later and I'm getting low, so I called my surgeon's office and his assistant told me she cannot refill my anti nausea meds because it's not a "maintenance" drug. She said I shouldn't have to take nausea meds the rest of my life. So now I'm totally freaking out because I don't know how I'm going to deal with this nausea without meds for it. I don't want to mess up my wrap by uncontrollable heaving. I thought my doc said that this is a side effect of having the surgery. I don't know what to do now.
Does anyone else have nausea after having the surgery for years? If so, does your surgeon still prescribe you meds for it? Do you know what I should do?

I've had this problem for 3 years but have had the nissen for over a year. It's my main symptom. During the day it's somewhat tolerable but at night it gets to the point where I will sit in the bathroom "just in case". My surgeon just told me I don't need any nausea meds. I'm not sure what to do but you could make an appt and talk about it with your surgeon.

I am going on 3 weeks and have not had any nausea at all. did the nausea start right after the surgery or did it develop over the first year?

Hi fashionista,
Sorry to hear your surgeon is so thoughtless! Do you have a good PCP you can discuss it with? I got my first nausea meds from my surgeon, but after that I've asked my primary care physician for it. Unless I'm got a case of gastritis, I don't get much nausea, but I keep it on hand in case of a stomach virus.

Seriously, if you ask your regular doc, I rather doubt he/she will have a problem prescribing it!

dencha- It wasn't my surgeon who wouldn't give me refills. His (new) assistant who handles all prescription refills told me no. I kinda fought with her about it and she said that she will talk to my surgeon. I had refills from my surgeon but I didn't realize there was an expiration date on the refills. It took me a year before I used most of the original prescription. When I went to call in a refill I realized they were expired. If they don't give me refills, i'll go to my PCP. I'm almost positive she will be more understanding. I'm so scared of messing up my wrap from heaving. When I get the nausea, it hits out of nowhere and I get real sick so I need something to relieve it.

Ekrich- I had nausea since right after my surgery, but it developed more after a year.

Wow, that stinks! The surgeon who is going to do my nissen next month says he always has his patients keep a constant supply of Zofran on hand because he doesn't want them to vomit.

fashionista it has been almost 6 months since my surgery and i am still having major problems from nausea and wanting to vomit. This is even with nausea medication as some foods that i use to be able to eat with no problems, want to come back up on me right away. Its very hard on all of us who have had this type of surgery as there are many complaints about it and the people that do it to you and a LACK of Communication associated on the Risks of this surgery. I too, feel for you and hope that you shall find the answers you are looking for from your doctors. As for me, i have to go out of the area or even out of the state to seek another doctors advise on my problem as from what i have been told, what has been done - can not be reversed and one has to live with it. Nausea after Nissen is not uncommon. I wrecked my wrap and reherniated from a short episode of vomiting.

My PCP gives me refills of Zofran. My GI doc says Nexium will cure the nausea. I take the Zofran when I need it, but if I feel a bout of constant pain from the stomach area (now mid-sternum after the surgery), I will take the Nexium for a couple of weeks or so.

I also have on hand at all times, including in my purse, some paregoric. It tastes incredibly bad, but a tablespoonful will stop vomiting even after it's started. The antinausea meds won't do that! Most docs don't know about it because it's a really old med. It's cheap, keeps for years and years.

So my surgeon's assistant never called me back. I originally called last tuesday. She said she would talk to my surgeon and call me back. I never heard from her so I called back, got her machine and left a message friday afternoon. Today is monday and I still haven't received a call back. This really annoys me because my surgeon is awesome. He's a great surgeon and very helpful, but for some reason this new assistant is horrible. I find it rude and unprofessional that she refuses to call me back.

I'm going to call my PCP tomorrow and see if she will call me something in.

I called my PCP today and she is calling me in some Zofran. I'm so grateful. It just irritates me how unprofessional my surgeon's assistant is. I don't know if I should still try and contact her. I just hate that she is avoiding me and not calling me back.
