Sorry you're having a rough day. It takes time for things to calm down. This too will pass. You might try a warm drink or lukewarm water and sip it, in case something is hung up there.

If the heating pad doesn't work for the pain, give ice a try. It's always worked better than heat for me.

Hang in there and don't panic. It'll get better.

Hi Pat, The name of my surgeon is Mr Chandra Cheruvu; his speciality is Gastroenterology and weight loss surgery. He has performed over 600 nissen fundolpication's. He is a very genuine and competent surgeon and I believe he has given me a new lease of life - I believe that my surgery has been a complete success and I would strongly recommend him. I had a moderate hiatus hernia repair and also a 360 wrap to replace my weakened LES valve.

Another question if I may. Is it normal to find 3 of my incisions all red and hot and sore?

Hi Spike,
I would call about that. As I recall, mine were pretty calm. It may be perfectly normal, but whenever you question something like that, it's best to give a call to your doctor's office.

Maybe someone else will be along who had a similar issue.

Hi Denise,

I went to the 24 hour doctors to get this checked out because the pain was so bad. As a result I have got an infection in my wounds and so have been given strong antibiotics and new dressings. This morning they are oozing bloody pus. Oh well, just another stage in my healing process.

I had a cottage pie (contained well cooked mince meat that was cut very small), did not have any difficulty eating and I felt that it all went down ok.

However, after about 10 minutes after eating, I had pain around my wrap and felt very nauseated. This must have irritated my wrap a bit and maybe now I am having a reaction to mince meat or, could it be that I had eaten too much!

Sometimes I don't know when I am full; it seems that my 'off valve' has gone.

Once again all this shows some mild irritation/aversion to certain foods that could be a symptom others may or may not experience as a result of surgery. Maybe my story will help others.

My guess is that you overate. You're still in the early weeks of recovery. It's interesting that some don't have a "stop valve" on eating, while others can eat very little. My situation was the latter. My stomach would not accept much food for quite a while. It always felt very full. This gradually subsided, but did keep me from overeating.

Hamburger or minced meat can contain quite a lot of undetected grizzle. When I have a big, bad hamburger, even now it can irritate my wrap. I tend not to chew it enough, as it's already chopped up, and therefore it kind of scrapes as it goes through.

At your stage of the game, it'll be even more likely that something like that may cause you problems.

Keep in mind that this isn't an "always" problem, so don't worry. There is an Irish restaurant nearby that makes the best Shepard's Pie--filled with hamburger. Oh, it's so good, and I have absolutely no problem after eating it.

Hang in there! Things will get better.

Hi drgrcr, its now been 45 days post surgery for me, wow it's gone so fast thinking about it now. I've been off work all this time and have enjoyed the rest and allowed my healing to go at its natural pace. I'm returneing work in 5 more days but only on a phased return (lucky me). Hope its all going well for you drgrcr.

Hi Denise, Thanks again for your vote of confidence, I'm starting to feel better again, the infection in my wounds are going and the pain is subsiding. I think maybe you were right about overeating with the mince meat but I think I will stay off this food for a while longer.  And yes I'm making good progress writing up new schemes for learning so this will make my life a bit easier.

Went to the Mayo yesterday for my pre surgery exam. the date is set for March 30th. Yes I am a bit nervous, but I am really tired of living like this. It will be 2 years this July since this nightmare began, I am ready to wake up and start living again!

Be sure to start a new thread all about your surgery and recovery! You will be so glad when your surgery date gets here, and you can cross over to the recovery side of this whole thing!

I believe you are very well prepared, having stuck around this forum enough to know pretty much the gambit of what to expect. You know we'll be here to support your recovery and answer any questions that come up.

Why don't you start that new thread now! You can ask for things you might want to have in the house before the surgery, and tips on early recovery.

We're here for you, and we'll welcome you to the Wrapped Club soon!

Only got two more days before I go back to work, must make the most of it. I'm glad that my infection has almost gone.

Seen my surgeon for a post op appointment today. He is very pleased with my progress and so am I. I am wise to the continued method of small bites and to chew, chew, chew etc. I have been told that I may get another infection in one of my incisions again but this is not a big concern.   I still have not eaten bread and many meats but, now is the time to become more adventurous and take it slowly. I am going to try sausage tonight lol.   All in all this is good progress and no acid pain.

Hi Spike,
Glad to hear your good news! Be sure to keep on the "straight and narrow". Really, anything that can be chewed to a liquid is fair game. That leaves a lot of leeway. Just experiment. Be sure to eat slowly and chew carefully.
I was told not to talk while I ate--it introduces air into the GI tract and makes it more likely that you do something unconsciously that causes you trouble.

I've been back in work for three days on phased return (only mornings) and I feel well. I've been tired and had to have a sleep in the afternoon but that's all. Having a little discomfort around my incisions and I feel that I have done over 100 sit-up’s (obviously I have not) so I'm assuming that this is because I'm moving around the classroom and being more active. My stomach aches but this is bearable. My diet is getting better all the time.

It sounds like you're doing great! Staying home to give yourself enough time to rest and heal, then going back half days was a great gift to yourself. People can, and have pushed themselves back to work earlier, but as you can see, taking it slow can be challenging enough. How early you can get back to work definitely depends on the job you do. Glad to hear things are going well!

I'm doing very well however, my whole stomach aches most of the time - as a result of being back at work and teaching I guess. It feels like I have done in excess of 200 sit-ups (of course I have not and won't even try). I am eating quite well, still only small amounts but I have progressed to quite a normal diet now which is good. Still no bread and I have found certain foods stick a bit but nothing too problematic. I am only working part time still and feel that this is enough; I know that I am lucky to be able to do this. Is it normal to have a dull ache in the stomach? Not meaning to complain but teaching is so draining at times and when I am at work then I am running not walking all the time and the students all demand my time. Still I love my career choice and I won't change this so I will simply try to take it slowly as best I can.

I went back to teaching full days last week. I have also had dull stomach pains and am exhausted by the time I get home. The kids take every ounce of energy and then some, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. It will probably take several weeks to get the stamina up. I think it is like the beginning of the year. You look forward to it and are excited, but it takes so much energy. But we do eventually get in a groove. Take it easy.
