Heartburn @ Night: Hurts more when breathing in?

Hi everyone,

I get heartburn at night frequently, and have noticed that the pain feeling is a lot more intense if I am breathing in. Even today, I had heartburn through the night and just have been up for 3 hours, but still get the pain when i breathe in. It is almost muscular in nature...

I have been diagnosed with GERD and been struggling for years, so I am 99% sure that even if this particular symptom isn't normal, it shouldn't be something not GERD.

When I don't get heartburn at night, I don't notice the breathing in aspect of it. Day-time heartburn doesn't give it to me. Anyone else have this?

I would recommend you see your Dr. re new sx. Also this may be caused by anxiety due to worrying about the new symptom.

Hi St. Kitt,

Its not really a new symptom. Whenever I wake up w/ reflux, I always feel it more when I take a deep breathe in...but since it happened yesterday it made me want to come and see if anyone else has noticed this...

It is either muscular or just reflux...nothing worry related. I was thinking maybe it meant i aspired acid into my lung or something....just trying to think what it may be...

I had a similar episode in college. I went to see the doctor, and he said that when the pain is associated with breathing, it is almost always because something is getting caught on the lung wall. He said it's nothing to worry about and should resolve itself. In my case, it did. That was almost 15 years ago, and I haven't had a problem since.
