idea   Hi Bill

That makes sense to me. It is just a long haul to get better. But I know we will. I can not do milk so I have a hard time finding things I can have on the soft diet. Thank you for your information. This forum sure has helped me not call my doctor every 5 minutes.

Hi everybody my acid reflux now is worse maybe acid refluz is something will live with me forever, I am starting asking myself if the surgery really worked, another thing is that I amm trying to find out what food I am eating that produces me heartburn or acid reflux.
I am eating
soups, yougurts, cereals, eggs,
but I was thinking that maybe milt does not do good on me

I dont know what to do, I am feeling so sad, devastated. my surgeon told me that they did a double wrapped cuz I am skinny how that affects in the healing process does it take longer?

Jorgito try to stay calm, and believe me i am in the same boat as you, and on top of that my constipation have been a little bit bad with me after the surgery, which have made my hemorrhoids the get bad, but we have to try to be positive, my doctor put me last week in normal diet, so in that sense I don't have any problem to swallow or anything like that, how ever I am still having burning in my chest and in my throat. But we have no option to hang in there, and try to give it time, the good thing that we have survive the surgery without mayor side effects. i have heard from people that don't start to feel good until a couple of months after the surgery. Hang in there Jorgito, I can tell you that for me the best thing have been when I went back to work. I am engineer, so my job had me very busy, and thinking all the time, so it takes my mind away of my reflux problems. I suggest you that try to focus in something else, house, family, girlfriend, wife, work, college, anything that takes you mind away from all this problems. I know it is very difficult to don't think that all this was for nothing but we have to have faith, this surgery have very high success rates, we can't be that unlucky to be in that 5%-10% that don't get relief.

I had the Nissen fundiplcation 3/7/00 and thought I ok to get regular food.  Let me tell you.....do not try chinese food yet.  OMG!!  I have been sick for 2 days with stomach pain and nausea.  Not sure what triggered the pain?? (egg roll or MSG)

I would like to know if anyone has found something that works for the nausea??  Not being able to vomit has it's drawbacks.

We all sound like we are all in the same spot and have the same symtoms. Laura you are an inspiration. My doctor put me back on a Nexium in the morning for now and we shall see.

I find that Zofran helps me for naseua. I do not know what I would have done without this

forum. Everyone is so supportive.

Thanks for the info - I will ask my Dr. about the Zofran for the nausea.  I agree the forum with people who have been thru this are the BEST.

Hi, I joined because my boyfriend had this surgery done on March 22 of this year and he is still haing slight heartburn problems plus he is having terrible gas pains everyday that effects him from working. He has told me that he regrests getting the surgery done. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tell him it is very frustratung and we all know. I had my surger March 23 rd and I feel what seems to be acid also but my doctor for the time being has but me back on a Nexium (acid reflux med) just right now untill my system is healed. It will take months before we are really healed. What typed of food is he eating? I have talked to several people on here and they say it is at least a good couple of months before you even feel like a person. So have him hang in there. I know you are going through a lot too. I have a great husband that is a good cook and he mashes things up so I can have a variety of things. This is a good site. You might want to look at past posts.

Hi people I talked to one chinese friend and he gave me a webside for some exercises, he says it is very effective. so I dont know if you are interested in this info. Also I notices that the more I worry the more reflux so now I dont think of anything related to, I pray God cuz now He is the only one who can help us.

:-)  Hi everyone

Here is an update on me that might help some of you. I woke up not being able to breath this morning and I had do saliva and white stuff around my mouth. I went into the ER and I was very

dehydrated. They did a barium test and everything looked great. Recently I have only been able to eat a few bites of food and have to stop as it would hurt my stomach. I mentioned this to the ER doctor. He gave me so calfate (which is something used for ulcer to coat stomach) I do not have an ulcer. But after taking the Calfate I waited about 30 minutes and he told me to try to eat something. They bought me a yogurt. I was able to eat the whole yogurt where before I would have had to do a small amount at a time. I am so very happy. So be very careful about getting dehydrated as because we are not eating properly it can happen very easily. I am drinking liquids but will be drinking more now.

I sure do need some encouragement from someone today. I am really down. I still have burning in chest and some pain. I am already 5 weeks from my surgery. I am on 1 Nexium and carafate to help

coat my stomach but still problems. I know it will be awhile but some days are so frustrating. I have an appointment with my surgeron on Tuesday. I am hoping he can give me some ideas. What is everyone eating to help keep protein up???

I'm just over 5 weeks in and I'm finding cod in butter sauce and mash potato is quite easy. I'm also pretty good with cottage pie and spaghetti bolognese. For snacks I've found some great little pots of fruit with jelly (or jello depending where you're from) also trifle or ice cream too for a proper treat. I've not had any more reflux (although I've still got a ton of Nexium in the cupboard in case I ever need them again) but still have a bit of pain from the incisions and occasionally get a very sharp pain from the wrap site. I'm now thinking this might be to do with a bit of sneaky easter chocolate late at night getting stuck and irritating the wrap. Hang in there, it may just be taking longer for your guts to adjust and hopefully the surgeon will give you some encouragement too.

Dead simple. Beef mince cooked with chopped onion and carrots. Add some beef stock, herbs, clove of garlic, dash of Worcester sauce, a tablespoon of tomato puree and thicken to make a nice gravy. Cook some mash potato separately and leave to cool whilst cooking the mince. Once mince is done put into an oven proof dish, mash goes on top, top the whole thing with some strong cheddar and bake for 30 about mins in a medium to hot oven until top is browned. Yummy!

Thank you so much for the advice on food. The cottage pie sounds could but I am afraid that is too much for me right now. I am eating Vienna sausage. They work fine. It is very hard for me to eat a lot of food. I will see my surgeron on Tuesday and see what he says. I had a barium done and everything looked fine. So we shall see. Thank you again for your support. It is just a long haul trying to get better. I still have some burning pain but I am hoping it will pass.

Dear CO Grandma,
I don't know if I've joined in any conversations with you before, as it always seemed as if you had plenty of support and things under control. I had the Nissen surgery in February 2009, so I know just what you're going through. I also found this forum--just as I was making the decision whether or not to go forward with the surgery. People here helped me so much...that's why I decided to stick around and try to help others the way I was helped.

I'm sorry to hear that you got dehydrated. I'm glad to hear you've found Carafate Suspension (I assume you're taking the liquid form...not the pill. If not, let me know). It's a great (and very safe and benign) drug and really calms down irritation. Be sure to take that regularly as you are healing. The hardest thing about Carafate is that you need to take it 2 hours before and after medication--an hour before or 2 hours after eating. It's challenging in that way, but very helpful.

You're just 5 weeks post op--that may seem a long time, but you've had major surgery. You are still in the very early stages of healing. Try to be patient. When we have laproscopic surgery it's easy to forget that our insides have been through a lot. Just because our outsides are healed, doesn't mean that our insides are.

You've had a major revision of your upper GI tract...your hiatal hernia was repaired, and the top of your stomach was stretched and wrapped around your esophagus, then stitched there. It will take time for your GI tract to adjust to the changes that have occurred.

A long time member here told me that the majority of the healing occurs in the first six months, and the remainder in the first year. Hopefully that will give you some perspective. Take things slowly. Tiny bites, chew, chew, chew...I was on solids right away--Day 5, but I ate very little, and tiny bites...only things that could be chewed to a liquid. Be sure to drink all day long...just keep drinking a little all the time.

I remember when I was at your stage of healing. I was getting some reflux symptoms, and I was so worried that my surgery had failed. My surgeon assured me that anything was possible that early in my healing. He also told me that the esophagus is a "dumb organ", and it interprets any pain as "heartburn". Try not to worry if you get a little reflux. Your wrap is still healing, and it is possible for a bit to slip by. As healing continues, the wrap will settle into place and be more consistent in its protection.

Try to relax into your recovery and follow its lead. If you can do that, and not struggle against it, you will find your recovery much easier to handle.

Thank you so much for your words of encouragment. I did start taking Carafate yesterday but became very short of breath. I called the ER as we live in a little town and they told me to stop

taking it until I see my surgeon on Tuesday. That was the only new thing that I had done and

I guess one of the serious side effects is that. I am not usually a very patient person as you

could ask my husband. But I will take your words of wisdom to heart.
