Nissen Fundoplication Recovery

Went to see my surgeon today and he said I could eat anything I want. I was so very happy as I have been eating a lot with no problem. I am 8 weeks into my surgery. I did have a problem with being very short of breath in the morning and then most of the day. Well toward the evening I would get better. I have a herniated cervical disc which I am going in for therapy but ask the therapist if it could cause the shortness of breath and she said no and should go to my doctor. Well to make a long story short  (too late)  because of the 30 pounds that I lost and not eating good for awhile my dilantin level (seizure med) was elevated. It should be 10-20 and mine was 25.  So they are taking me off my med for 2 days and then I will go on 100 mg instead of the 200 mg that I have been taking for 30 years. They give you med by your weight and not I am 30 pounds lighter. So they will check my level at the end of the week and see where it is. So that was weird. But my surgery is great. I am able to eat pretty much anything which makes me very happy. You guys are such great support. I am sure glad you made it Laura HA HA.

I was so excited about eating anything that I think I ate too fast and not feeling good today but boy I learned the hard way. So I will listen to you and go slower. When I screw up eating it takes a good day to get back to feeling better. So I know I will be better tomorrow. Frustrating. Thank you for the advice.

Carol, I did the same thing with zaxby's food when I starte eating more solid foods. Ouch! I feel for you.

Carol I am so glad you are eating all types of food, I was able to eat all foods at week 5 but it took another 2 weeks for me to feel good eating, I mean no pain when eating, no feeling overly full. Unfortunately I am still having burning in my chest, I had a barium swallow last week and today an endoscopy, and my gastroenterologist said that both things looks very good, I still have to see my surgeon next Thursday to see what does he think, but I suspect he is going to say the same thing, I know they communicate with each other quite often, i am at a lost here, my gastroenterologist suggest if I don't improve in a couple of weeks, to repeat the 24 hours PH test, oh God! how I hate that test! I am now 2 months post op and i can't believe this is happening to me

I am not sure if you got this message before but I am sorry that you are not doing well with a the chest burning. Hope they find out something. They put me back on 1 Nexium a day.

Hi guys just a quick update, well my surgeon basically don't know what to do with me, I had already endoscopy and barium swallow and according to him and my gastroenterologist everything looks "beautiful", my surgeon basically don't know anything else, I have appointment with my gastroenterologist next week for him see tell me what are we going to do, I suspect that i am going to have to repeat that horrible 24 Hours PH test. On top of everything my bowels are all over the place, I am so constipated, I can't even believe it, I am taking a lot of fiber, one cup of prune juice every day, and it helps but sometimes the evacuation is incomplete, soft but incomplete, I am going nuts here, but I will keep you guys posted.

I can relate to you, I have asthma, and in also 2 weeks before the surgery I had a horrible cold that let me having a cough that last forever, it is true that people with pulmonary diseases have a higher risk with the anesthesia, in my case the anesthesiologist put me in a course of steroids for a week prior to the surgery, and everything went well to me, in the case of pain medication many people don't really need that much, I need it the day of the surgery and the day after at night, and that was it, I was sore, for sure, but it was not enough that will justify take pain medications, in my case I hate the dizziness and sleepiness that those things gives you I am totally control freak, I had a pretty fast recovery, the soreness last for just 4 or 5 days, every once in a while if I overdid it with something I will get sore, but nothing mayor. With medication i will crush them and dilute it in a little bit of water, and drink it, taste like crap, but it is better to swallow it that way, anyways consult with your doctor, not all medication can be crushed.

I'm sorry I can't remember if you've had your surgery yet.

If you're post surgery: The pain could be from an irritated wrap.

If no surgery: It could be reflux issues.

I am over 2 months out from my surgery and I too had very little pain from the actual surgery. The only pain I had was the first day from the gas the pump into you. It was in my shoulders and once that was gone I was okay. I think I took a total of 3 pain pills.

Hi Laura, have you tried probiotics....they really help to get your system to get back to normal. It also helps with the constipation.
