Recovering Nissen Fundoplication Part 1 of 2

I was able to eat manderine oranges in the little fruit cups. Also applesauce was good to go.

Thanks so much for your replies. I tried the cantaloupe again and it was super ripe, no go.. almost right away bothered my stomach and about 1 am I was up trotting to the bathroom..pu..... but, I tried watermelon today and that was at lunch time. It has not bothered me at all.. If it is watermelon for the summer, I can deal with that.. love the stuff.. I cooked some zucchini and yellow squash at dinner tonite.. I ate a small bit of it and so far it has not bothered me at all. I cooked it done done done.. but boy was it tasty.. Right out of my Aunt & Uncles garden... I am so glad that these are not bothering me.. veggies and fruit are my favorite foods...
I still do not feel hungry, I just get a bit of a hollow feeling when I should be hungry. I still have to determine when enough is enough.. I cannot tell yet if I am full until it is almost too late.. so I just say this is what I am eating and I do not add or take any more... It is working..

I have no clue what is causing it, but I have been having a bit of an issue after I ate some toast this AM. I felt nauseous and very full like I had over eaten. It was an ache not a sharp pain, the only thing that helped was holding my stomach with my arm across it. It bothered me to the extent that I was almost ready to leave work. I thought that I would try drinking some water first and that did help some. It took away the overfull feeling which in turn helped the nausea. I am thinking that this was the toast caught at the wrap site??? I may have swallowed too large a bite or didn't chew well enough??? I have no early experience to compare this to that I can recall. It was rather scary. At 9 weeks post surgery I was not expecting this and I must say, as well as I have done through the recovery, maybe I have been a bit too arrogant!
I ate some well cooked veggies and some boiled potatoes very well cooked, for dinner tonite (I have eaten this before with no ill affects). I now have my version of the hic-cups.. mine actually only do the hic... I have a bit of a stretched feeling on my mid-right front as though I may be swelling with gas.. have not experienced release yet but I have a feeling it is coming. (sorry for the graphic description) Any advice as to how to curb this problem I am having will be welcomed.
I am still thankful for the results I have had. This is just a small hic-cup in my recovery...

I thought that was the case but it still makes me feel better hearing it from one who has seen and heard pretty much all of it. I have been so blessed with such a relatively easy recovery, and I guess I have taken it for granted at times through the last 9 weeks..

Good Morning and as I have read through your recovery I commend you on your perservance and your positive attitude.  I know that each person is unique but it takes many patients 10-12 months to fully recover from surgery.  It can be a slow process and thus the up and down days.

You are certainly receiving great support from 2 of our super members.

Has anyone been told that due to previous abdominal surgeries, the nissen F could only be done as an open incision rather than laproscopic procedure?

My surgeon explained to me that if there was too much scar tissue present from previous surgery, the laproscopic may not be able to be done. Fortunately the only surgery I had ever experienced was a laproscopic hysterectomy. He did the lap Nissen with no problems..

I have been following your gentle reminder that I must remember to chew chew chew and take small bites.. I guess I had been doing so well I just forgot that I am still healing... since I went back to basics, I have been doing pretty well. I am on a fresh zucchini, yellow squash and potato binge. I boil the sliced squash with chopped sweet onion and some salt & pepper to taste and I boil the new red potatoes in chicken broth then season with salt & pepper. I think this will help me keep the weight off. But, I still can only eat about 1/3 of what I used to and this makes me Happy ;-).

I have been trying to eat well for a couple of days. I was, as Joy so aptly put it, in "ouch" mode. I take for granted that I am doing very well and go over board with what I eat and then I have to take a step back and re-group. It isn't easy but it has to be done so that I can get back to where I was and move forward from there.....
I refuse to pout and whine.. I will recover in what ever time my body says I will... if I take a step back occasionally, so be it.. I am impatient but I am reflux free so I can wait... ;-)
I will never regret having the surgery, it was the best decision I ever made.. I just wish I had known about it earlier so I would not have had to suffer so long...

I am just going to take one day at a time and continue to thank my PCP for the referral to my surgeon. I have eaten a variety of foods recently but they have all been 'safe'. But healthy. I am blessed to be able to eat healthier because of the wrap. I had always wanted to eat healthy and get rid of my 2 biggest vices... potato chips and Bread... since I have been forced to, I have found that I do crave these once in a while but not so often as to be a problem. I can occasionally eat a flat bread toasted if I eat slowly and CHEW!!!! that seems to be ok. I have also been able to eat a slice of Pizza without repercussions as long as I take very small bites and chew well.

I am cooking some good veggies right now, that I will be taking to work for lunch the rest of the week. That is good for me.. I love living in Florida because we have fresh veggies almost all year long..

Hi all... I wish I had popped in here weeks ago... haven't been in here in a long time. I'm 17 days post op... had the Nissen! All of your posts are so helpful and most I could have written myself. I think I have tried eating the wrong things way too soon. BIG NONO tonight at dinner. Hadn't been out of the house so made hubby take me out to eat. fish and a few french fries chewed and chewed and chewed. didn't have trouble swallowing or anything getting stuck but I'm paying NOW with horrible tummy rumbles. they are so bad I'm giggling and that hurts! HAHA after reading lots of great info I think I need to get up and walk around the house in hopes of moving the bubbles! ;) my surgeon said to add foods as tolerated... so far only canned peaches have cause me agony... whodathunkit?? I love my Magic Bullet!! so sick of broth and pureed food but I'm seeing that is exactly what i need to be doing and stop being in such a hurry!! :)

I am sad to say that I have had to take about 3 steps back. Up until recently, coffee had not bothered me at all. I have not changed brands nor have I made it any differently, but, I have had to stop drinking coffee. I realized over the weekend that my stomach was feeling tight and queasy after the first swallow of coffee in the mornings.. (this had been happening for about the last 2 weeks or so) the feeling continued into the late morning as long as my one large coffee would last. Once I began to drink water the feeling would dissipate. I tried being "off" coffee for the weekend and it worked, no more tight queasy feeling. Well I guess that this is one more hurdle I am going to have to wait a while to go over. I can do it, I tried drinking hot tea and it does not bother me so I am a tea drinker for a while.
I have also discovered that Alfredo sauce with sun dried tomatoes and sauteed fresh mushrooms and cubed chicken over angel hair pasta is wonderful.. it is not as harsh as spaghetti sauce (milder to the stomach). I also found that seafood, shrimp specifically, does not hurt my stomach as long as I chew chew chew... and it was amazing.. I took my husband out for Fathers Day and I think I enjoyed the meal more than he did.. ;-). And the healing continues......
